The tale of Zuko is perfect and no one can tell me otherwise.

reasons:

1. look at his hair. look at his second half of season 2 hair. LOOK AT IT

2. it's adorable that he's all paranoid cuz that's all he knows but she just has a crush on him obviously, who doesn't

3. and he's just so sincerely surprised and all innocent looking when she asks him on a date. He's so jaded about everything in his life and he's so bitter but this actually catches him by surprise and it's new and he's adorable and he doesn't even know what he's doing. my baby

4. Iroh. Iroh you sly bastard. Zuko's gonna date that girl so hard if you have anything to say about it you are so excited and you are literally the suave-est with the ladies in the whole show you know what you're doing you're the mother duck petting and fawning over your little duckling because your little boy is going on his first date oh it's so cute, oh he's so angsty, oh you just want him to be happy more than anything, oh you just want him to lead a normal teenage existence even though that's been taken away from him brutally, oh it's so exciting, oh "he would love to", oh get over here you, you perfect man.

5. Jin. Jin, you cutie, ruffling your man's hair before you even know him. She knows how she wants that hair. it is not all gelled up. she knows

6. you awkward baby Zuko. this is our first real glimpse of the awkward Zuko we know and love in book 3 whose anger issues express themselves in a more loving, confused way. He doesn't know what he's doing. He was banished when he started his prime dating years he don't even know what's up he's so uncomfortable hearing anyone call her his girlfriend oh you cutie.

7. "What do you like to do for fun?" "nothing."

So Jin has all these fun questions for him and she doesn't even really feel that awkward and she has theories about Zuko already (clearly he's the juggling sort) but here's the thing about what she wants to know. None of it has to do with Zuko's scar. And it doesn't feel like a topic she's avoiding or anything. It doesn't really interest her. In all the fun stories about Zuko she's played out in her mind and in all the staring at Zuko she's done for a few days, she's not even phased by his scar. And that scar is the sort of thing that could avert a stranger's gaze, could disgust someone. But she thinks he's hella cute because he is and asks him about his travels about his life and doesn't ask him super rude question about his scar. Last girl he met he had any sort of romantic tension with at all first thing was like "dude your scar let me touch it." and she's just a cutie treating him like a human being and looking past his disfigurement.

9. Ok here's the thing. It's so hard for Zuko to trust anyone. Even if he weren't hiding in a city full of people on the opposite side of a war from him, I still suspect he would have some serious trust issues. He had a really terrible childhood and a terrible abusive father and his whole life for the past 3 years has been based around one traumatic incident. He's clearly a very angry and shut off person. So of course, of course, he doesn't just jump out right away and tell her anything about their past (he makes up a dumb circus story, hilarity ensues). But he likes this girl. She's his first date! (I mean maybe he had something with Mai but I doubt it he's a dork how would he arrange dates without Iroh doing it for him) and he likes her. When she asks him to juggle, he sees her in this glorious musical light, and sees how pretty and bubbly and cute she is and he tries it. Zuko takes some risks at looking ridiculous for this girl. and that's adorable.

Um and then she's adorable she wants to take him to this lantern fountain because it's her favorite place in the city and look at how whimsical and romantic and adorable she is she really does just love this place because it's a beautiful peaceful spot in a bustling city. and then she's so so disapointed that she can't share this beautiful spot with her beautiful new man friend.

11. and then. AND THEN. oh god I love this part. Remember that whole thing about it being hard for Zuko to trust people? As a factor of the city and the terrifying, hardening circumstances of being on a run, and also more deeply probably as a result of the verbal and physical abuse he has received from his father over the course of his life. But he sees this cute girl's disappointment. And he is overcome by it. For one moment, grumpy, angsty zuko, is overcome by some happy exciting little feeling. Some need to please someone else, this cute bubbly girl. And against all his instincts, against all logic, he trusts her. He trusts her to close her eyes. He trusts her not to question. And he trusts the circumstances to not reveal his actions to anyone nearby. Because fuck everything, he wants to make this girl happy. He wants to make someone else happy. His life for 3 years has been driven by his own quest for safety, acceptance, honor. And this time he wants to make her happy. And honestly, make himself happy by gaining the acceptance of this adorable girl. and that is so beautiful to me.

12. oh wow him lighting the candles is so beautiful and perfect.

13. And of course he cock-blocks himself. Not just because he's painfully awkward. But because of the trust thing. He's done his wild moment, his moment overcome by cute feelings and a desire for happiness. But now reality is back. And everything is so complicated. The circumstances are so complicated. And even more, he is so complicated. So hurt. So unsure. It makes 1000 percent sense that Zuko would be worried to kiss this girl.

14. But because Jin is the master of suave-itude and adorable, she gives him the cutest little kiss. And he kisses back. Zuko gets a happy moment. It is tainted by bitterness, by confusion, by terrible circumstances, as everything in his life seems to be. But he still gets a beautiful little kiss with a beautiful girl by a beautiful fountain.

15. and of course, heartbreakingly, but sensibly, he can't. Of course he can't seriously get involved with this girl. For a fleeting, sweet little moment, he let himself believe that he could. But it's just too complicated. And sadly, quietly, he says he can't and he slips away. Because it makes him so sad. It doesn't make him angry, and the show doesn't play his anger for laughs. The show doesn't play the situation off as simple, as straightforward. he's confused, he's so emotionally scarred, and he's just... sad.

17. and I just love Zuko's homecoming. He is the epitome of the angsty confused teenager when he slams the doors. Because it does kind of suck. It kind of sucks that it's hard for him to open himself up to this girl. It does kind of suck that circumstances make it impossible for him to build a relationship with her. but It was nice. Look at that cute little smile. He is happy. He is confused, he is angry, he is upset. But he let himself trust someone, he let himself let go. and he had a cute little pond-side kiss. Oh it makes me so happy to see sincere happiness in Zuko's eyes for once. And sometimes sincere happiness is a little sad. And that's ok.
