Mat You Extra Bastard
Matrim Cauthon are you honest-to-Light demanding an apology from Nynaeve and Elayne for something that happened 5 BOOKS AGO
Here I am reading Crown of Swords and Mat tells Birgitte to tell the girls to apologize for jerks to him back in THE DRAGON REBORN???
Donāt get me wrong itās satisfying as all getout Iām just saying I hope to one day reach Mat Cauthon levels of petty
Petty?! My good sir/madam, he broke into the Stone. The Stone of Tear. The impenetrable Stone. With naught but a quarterstaff, some knives, and a few big fire crackers. Having some Aiel may have helped.
The students
Oh boy. Itās been a while hasnāt it?
This thing started out as aĀ āI gotta draw some WoT, itās been ages since Iāve posted anythingā then turned to aĀ āwait, I can do a parallel of these twoā and thenĀ āIām just going to experiment a bunch, practice some background, see where this takes meā
commission work for 7 ladies of the 7 Ajah
wheel of time characters as john mulaney quotes
Rand: āYou know those days where youāre like, this might as well happen?ā
Mat: āIt is 100% easier not to do things than to do them, and so much fun not to do them.ā
Perrin: āāWhy buy the cow?ā Uh, maybe because, every day, the cow asks you when youāre gonna buy it. And⦠⦠you live in a really small apartment with the cow, so you canāt avoid that question at all. And also, the cow is way better at arguing than you areā¦. ā¦why buy the cow? Because you love her.ā
Egwene: āI was offended as a lady who was getting pushed around by this chauvinist asshole that works at Blockbuster video, talking to me like Iām some floozy.ā
Moiraine: āSometimes babies will point at me, and I donāt care for that shit at all. Like, Iāll be on an elevator, and a baby will be there in its big, like, stroller activity tray, just, like, working on one Cheerio with Bobby Fischer-like intensity. And itāll look up at me and go⦠I like to lean in and go, āStop snitchinā, motherfucker.āā
Lan: āIāll keep all my emotions right here, and then one day Iāll die.ā
Nynaeve: āOne black coffee. Same motherfucker.ā
Loial: āHey, you could pour soup in my lap and Iāll probably apologize to you.ā
Min: āSo I put on a sweater and a pair of corduroy pants, and I felt safe.ā
Elayne: āI am too blessed to be stressed.ā
Aviendha: āWhy do people do that? People always shush animals. Theyāve never spoken.ā
Thom: āIām either having a drink or I have to pee, youāre livinā the golden years, kid, not me.ā
Faile: "Some people give off a vibe of⦠Right away, theyāre like, āDo not fuck with me.'ā
Lews Therin Telamon: ā'My wifeā just has some kick-ass to it, you know? 'Get away from my wife! No one talk to my wife!ā Marriage is gonna be very magical. 'I didnāt kill my wife!'ā
Lanfear: Ā āOoh, whoās that fella? I bet he did kill his wife.āĀ
This is such a perfect combination of two of my favorite things
do you ever bite into a piece of cheese on bread and immediately find yourself as a true and honest shepherd boy in the 1300s who sometimes steals apples but is overall hale and truehearted
Weird. I bit into bread and cheese and find myself mischievous knave from the 1500s as ready to drink an ale in good company as to cut the purse of a lord, but is an overall wastrel.
okay but. rand vs mat
@rafejudkinsās (Amazon's Wheel of Time Showrunner)
āHome for Christmas and found my and my momās old copies of āThe Great Huntā. We spent years reading them together. Can you tell w
Brandon Sanderson:Ā āFilming (WOT) soon starting.ā
As The Wheel of Time does not belong to me, I like to be careful about what I do and say with it. I donāt want to overstep my bounds. But for those who havenāt been paying attention, this series has progressed into a full-blown green light at Amazon Studiosāwith actual episodes being written and filming soon starting.
I donāt know what role, if any, Iāll have in this. Like I said, I like to be respectful of Team Jordan. Itās not my place to try to muscle in and pretend Iām in charge. At the same time, I do think I could offer something to the production, and the showrunner (who is quite sharp) has reached out to me multiple times for conversations about the adaptation. Iām impressed with everything I see, and hope to at the very least be able to pop over to the set when filming happens and grab some photos for you all.
For most of my own properties, Iād say to not hold your breath. I think theyāll happen eventually, but you shouldnāt start to get hyped up until Step Five happens for something. Well, weāre past Step Five with the Wheel of Time, and you can officially begin to feel hyped. Itās actually happening, and it looks great so far.
SOURCE
I donāt know for certain when it will be available to watch, but Iām very confident itās going to get filmedāand likely sometime this year. Thereās no guarantee it will be good, but the show runner is very good, and knows the series really well. Every sign Iāve seen is positive, and Iāve been through the wringer a few times on Hollywood projects, so I think Iām starting to be able to spot when something is looking good or not.

āāAre you any relation to Jain Charin, Noal?ā Mat chewed an olive and discreetly spat the pit into his palm. [ā¦] The old manās face went still as stone, and Mat had torn off a piece of bread and eaten that as well before Noal answered. āA cousin,ā he said at last, grudgingly. āHe was my cousin.ā āYouāre related to Jain Farstrider?ā Olver said excitedly. His favorite book was The Travels of Jain Farstrider, which he would have sat up reading by lamplight long past his bedtime had Juilin and Thera allowed. He said he intended to see everything Farstrider had, when he grew up, all that and more. āWho is this man with two names?ā Tuon asked. āOnly great men are spoken of so, and you speak as if everyone should know him.ā āHe was a fool,ā Noal said grimly before Mat could open his mouth, though Olver did get his open, and left it gaping while the old man continued. āHe went gallivanting about the world and left a good and loving wife to die of a fever without him there to hold her hand while she died. He let himself be made into a tool byāā Abruptly Noalās face went blank. Staring through Mat, he rubbed at his forehead as though attempting to recall something. āJain Farstrider was a great man,ā Olver said fiercely. His hands curled into small fists, as though he was ready to fight for his hero. āHe fought Trollocs and Myrddraal, and he had more adventures than anyone else in the whole world! Even Mat! He captured Cowin Gemallan after Gemallan betrayed Malkier to the Shadow!ā Noal came to himself with a start and patted Olverās shoulder. āHe did that, boy. That much is to his credit. But what adventure is worth leaving your wife to die alone?ā He sounded sad enough to die on the spot himself.ā
ā Knife of Dreams, chapter 6 āA Stave and a Razorā.
The Wheel Of Time in numbers.
Before you get to the arc payoffs, I think it would be cool if you could illustrate your thoughts on the journeys the main characters have gone on to get to this point. Like, your thoughts on their consistency and what you think worked and didn't work, aside from Perrin's plotline temporarily dying and Mat disappearing for a book.
This is an excellent question and I could probably take several weeks to compile an answer but Iām going to answer it now because I am an adult who is entirely in control of her life and her choices especially regarding fiction, fictional characters, and the discussion thereof.
āMain charactersā is a rather flexible definition in WoT so Iāll start with the original set from EotW and go from there, and weāll see how far I get.
(Okay it turns out I only got through the Emondās Field group, becasue Iām me and I canāt just write a sentence or two for each one, but I might try later to do the same for some other characters)
Rand alāThor: Randās character arc, and the way itās executed, is fantastic. He definitely benefits from the sheer length of the series (well, his arc does; he just suffers), because it allows for a nuanced, complex, thorough character journey from farmboy to broken hero, from human viewpoint protagonist to distant focal point around which everything spirals, from determined trusting optimist to desperate half-mad fatalist. Any of those transitions can be and have been done in shorter wordcounts, but the length of the series, and the way everything about what Rand does and goes through escalates a little (or sometimes a lot) with each book, gives his arc this feeling of an inexorable pull, of compounding pain, of just a series of small steps, each only a little further than the next.Ā
When you have 12 books (so far) to do that with, you can end up a huge distance away from where you started, without it ever feeling like too great a jump. Each ālevelā (either of what he has to endure or what he himself does and becomes) is gradually normalised over time; he and the reader acclimate, so then itās time to step up to the next. Put The Last That Could Be Done after, say, Falme, and it would still hurt but it would feel almost like too much (and also not enough, because it would lack the weight and momentum of everything that came before). Instead, you get to watch the slow unravelling of a character even as his power grows, tension building, until (like his ancestors the Aiel) he becomes all but unrecognisable as who he was at the start, but every step along the way feels like just another step, until a single step is all it takes to push him off the cliff his narrative has spent the better part of twelve books building for him.
I also love the way Jordan has played with POV in this particular arc, with Rand going from the main viewpoint character to barely having a POV. It suits the way he goes from being a protagonist beginning his journey to becoming the centre of a whirlpool that expands to encompass the entire world, as well as how he goes from being very young and human and real to⦠āI donāt know how human the Dragon Reborn can afford to be,ā to just dragging himself and the world to the Last Battle. He loses POV chapters because he no longer sees himself as a person with agency or even the right to his own mind ā which, too, is invaded and eroded as time goes on, again fitting well with the decrease in POV chapters: his mind is literally no longer his own, nor ā he believes ā is his life.
I expect his to be one of the arcs with the greatest catharsis in its payoff, just because thereās so much thatās built up over time; the potential energy, if you will, is huge, and at some point it has to be released, and while building it took 12 books and counting, thereāsā¦not all that much time left, so itās going to be released in a far shorter time than it was built, and if anyone remembers anything from physics class, that means itās going to hit with a hell of a lot of force.
Also okay in my head this was going to be maybe a paragraph or two per character so uhā¦.
My tears definitely welled up a few times reading random and egwene
