also thinking about "you got the real love of our life back" in van's plane scene and the implication that other taissa is not as 'real' as our tai? which (imho) goes against a lot of what the show has been saying about her (it's not evil it's just hungry; other tai showing up to help tai survive such as taking over to eat jackie or leading van towards the symbols in the trees or finding shauna in the storm) as a (supernatural or not) presence meant to help taissa. i just... damn i wish this show had any consistency whatsoever, particularly when it comes to tai. part of what i really dislike about s3 is the way they keep doing the other tai shock reveal, because it makes it a lot harder to evaluate taissa's decisions and actions.

in regards to the masks worn in the wilderness

in a (fictional) show i watched where survivors of a failed expedition were forced to resort to cannibalism, the victim's head was removed first to both preserve its remaining dignity and serve as further psychological distance from the fact that survivors are eating a human corpse. this is the function that i assumed the masks would play in yellowjackets; by covering their faces during the hunt, they are free of guilt and free to be their truest selves. it also reminded me of the ortolan bunting, where the bird is mistreated and killed in such a way that it is traditional for the diner to hide their face with a napkin, "to hide from god".

(it's also interesting that not only did this very much not happen when the survivors ate jackie, but it's taissa who is connected with seemingly the most graphic/dehumanizing detail: "tai, you ate her face.")

it's why tai and van being the first ones to wear masks on the show (in order to come out at doomcoming, a different representation of that same idea: they are free from societal shame and stigmatization to reveal their queerness) makes sense and is the first step along that road. because of that, i think the girls having interchangeable masks during hunts makes sense to me, so that nobody really knows who's who, and they aren't held accountable for what they're doing during the hunt. (see: any of the really well written metas on this site about yellowjackets and maenadism) it fits in very neatly with the hivemind themes of the show as well -- during a hunt one is being punished by the collective, not by individuals. **(and why i think season 3's 'everything this season is shauna's fault actually' was such a horrible take, but i digress)

we don't know if this is true since the series pilot hunt is the same as the season 3 finale hunt, but i would imagine that if there were to be another hunt, the masks would get interchanged, so nobody's wearing the same one again. i do think it's interesting that in every hunt so far, the girls have been masked or disguised in some way. whether it's the doomcoming masks and crowns during the travis hunt, evolving into their scarves and hoods pulled up during the natalie/javi hunt, and then finally the full-face winter masks during the mari hunt. it's also interesting to me that the victim is always bare-faced (and in the case of travis and mari, wearing very little clothing as well), vulnerable and open in a way that the rest of the pack isn't.

in this verse, the yellowjackets' plane crashes not in the canadian wilderness, but in the realm of the entity. soon, the survivors begin to realize that they're not in a normal forest, as they must fight to survive in this hostile realm, and some of the girls begin to worship the entity. *in this verse, the yellowjackets are unaware of the killers and trials, having been left on their own for nineteen months in the fog before they are eventually discovered by a few trial survivors wandering far from the campfire. open to all. the skeptic always gets killed off first, and taissa is already so done with this shit. sometimes with the help of her girlfriend movie expert best friend van, taissa is trying to solve this murder mystery so she can get back to what matters: early admission to colleges and the state soccer championship.

open to all. a tribute from district four described as "promising", taissa wastes no time in strategizing and making alliances. years later, as a celebrated victor, she hides the fact that she doesn't remember most of her time in the games, having dissociated with what she had to do, and tries to smile for the cameras. she's got a secret on and off messy romantic relationship with another past victor. in the event of a rebellion, taissa will try to feed information to the rebels without compromising her safety and position.

MY YELLOWJACKETS SEASON 3 CANON DIVERGENCES

teen timeline

when the girls believe they are going to be rescued and shauna and lottie refuse to leave, taissa does not take their side, instead joining natalie and the majority arguing to leave with the frog scientists. more thoughts on this here. 

taissa still encourages van to rig the cards when it becomes clear there is going to be another hunt, but is not as willing to forget the cost of their survival (looking specifically at the “we survived” / “we ate a fucking kid” interaction). 

in general, while taissa is enjoying the relative freedom she has to pursue her identity and her relationship with van in the wilderness, she is still very focused on getting home, more in line with her s1-2 characterization. any part of her that wants to stay in the wilderness she is trying to repress and keep close to the chest.

adult timeline

taissa does not give up her position as state senator. still believing she can power through this if she refuses to confront the problem, a lot of her arc this season is about trying to hold together the facade of her perfect life with her wife comatose in the hospital.

the main tai/other tai conflict this season is that other tai sees the facade of perfection for what it is, and tries to sabotage it (particularly in the state senate) in hopes of bringing tai back to what had made them happy: the forest, meat, running wild, van.

simone dies in the hospital from her injuries.

taissa is trying to play the grieving widow, the strong mother, and the infallible senator, all while she’s gone back to secretly hooking up with van. The tai/van conflict this season is around van feeling like nothing has changed from their secret hookups when they were kids; she’s still taissa’s dirty little secret, something to be ashamed of. 

(to be changed/plotted as necessary) but the plot around whether van needs to sacrifice people to the wilderness to stave off her cancer is a van plot. I don’t think tai needs to be as involved in it and I don’t even really think she should know about it. I think van would be keeping that to herself.

simone’s parents offer to take sammy for a little while so taissa has time to grieve, so that’s where he is for most of the season.

other tai does not have the degree of control over tai's body that she seemed to have by the end of season 3. this is because i think blaming everything tai does on her shadow self is a really boring way to make sure that none of taissa's decisions matter or can be analyzed.

van doesn't die or to be discussed.

i am thinking of just making taissa's base canon a wilderness/supernatural is real verse because i do think with everything in her storyline specifically (her connection to the wilderness, being able to find shauna during the snowstorm, leading van to the trees with the symbol, the sleepwalking, the dog's head on the altar = winning election, sammy being able to sense a difference between his mother and 'the other one', other tai sharing the 'it's not evil it's just hungry' thesis of the show) is really only explainable in that context.

but i will have a version where that is not the case/it is all psychological/mundane to leave options open for those who want to plot stuff that way? so just lmk during plotting what you prefer i guess.

while tai is the type to surround herself with people, she doesn't have many close friends. (she tells simone that she was also a loner as a child, similar to sammy) i wouldn't be surprised if that's why her parents initially encouraged her to join a team sport, hoping she would be able to make more friends.

in high school, she was popular, but also thought of as aloof and unapproachable, "bitchy". i think even before they started hooking up, her closest friend was van. van's empathy and comparative lack of concern about what others thought allowed tai to feel like she could let down her guard around her, so i think theirs was likely a close friends to close friends who kiss but let's not unpack all of that to wilderness-married story.

and then i think the second really important friendship of tai's life is of course the one she develops with shauna in the wilderness. where she'd previously seen shauna as little more than an extension of jackie (one of shauna's only comments during the "icing allie out" discussion is, "jackie won't like it", and tai only seems to take notice of/respect shauna when shauna votes against jackie to go to the lake) it's in the wilderness that we get to see the real formation of respect and care between those two -- shauna joining tai in the attic so she won't be alone, tai comforting shauna after her failed abortion, tai attempting to get help and risking her life for shauna's safety, both of them continuing to support each other at their worst.

i am going to type up my actual s3 canon and divergences (yk, eventually) but in the meantime i'm thinking about how in my canon s3 when there's hope of rescue, tai isn't openly saying she doesn't want to go home, and she's not standing with shauna and lottie when they don't want to leave. i think there's definitely a part of tai that wants to stay in the wilderness (like so much of tai's character, it's about duality -- who is she if they never get rescued? who is she if they do? which is scarier?) but i don't think she would openly voice that she's conflicted about rescue, especially if it comes at the cost of alienating the majority of the girls, especially especially including van, who tai has been going out of her way to avoid fighting with since season one. "happy wife, happy life."

because taissa is practical. she lets lottie thank the dirt for their meal without protest in the s1 finale not because she believes in it, but because she doesn't want to start a fight with van and because she doesn't want to jeopardize her authority within the group. it's also why she only speaks up for jackie during the jackie/shauna fight once, after the fight, telling jackie not to leave, but otherwise stays out of it entirely. like every other girl in the cabin, she could have tried to get jackie to come back inside. she doesn't. she sides with the hive. it's why she starts treating nat with more respect once nat shows her value to the group and becomes more respected (with the gun/the hunter role).

i think if the majority of the group didn't want rescue in s3, that would be a very different situation, because i think a lot of how taissa survives is by being able to adapt to the situation that she's in. the issue she's most stubborn about is not believing in the supernatural, and that's because of her childhood trauma. and even that she compromises and starts doing the breathing group with lottie in s2 because her sleepwalking is starting to worry van.

and i think there is a part of taissa that does want to fit in with society at any cost. this is the part of her that didn't want their relationship to be public even when it's only their team and the wilderness. this is the part of her that needs to be the yellowjackets success story, the queer kamala. she needs to fit in and she needs to be exemplary. and everything she represses and denies and tries to cull about herself in order to do that is what makes up other tai.

but tldr, if the majority of the group with only the exceptions of shauna and lottie are saying let's take this opportunity and let's go home, tai is going to be packing up to go home and repressing the shit out of any grief she has at leaving the freedom of the wilderness behind.

i will remember yellowjackets as a show with a good premise that at every turn refused to engage fully in not just the implications of the premise but also, like, the premise itself. furthermore i will remember it as a show that fumbled literally every single one of its women of color despite fascinating character setups. i will also remember it as a show that in its season one finale featured a woman entering a hidden chamber within her own home and finding that she was the threat of violence following her family; a Black lesbian woman who is at once bluebeard and her bride. and then they were like great let’s not explore this ever again

annie's heart is hammering in her chest as she runs. a kick to the ball, forceful and direct. she skids to a stop in the mud, almost out of control, but she catches herself in time to see the ball hit the high corner of the net. more precise than the last gazillion attempts. the muscles in her legs are warm and the sweat on her forehead has gone cold. the afternoon itself is cold, and wet, and she's exhausted, which all seems like a recipe for a bad mood. instead, annie's grinning, mid-laugh. home used to feel like this all the time.

she whirls around to taissa, both hands on her hips, triumphant. they've been running drills in their free time for weeks now. annie's gotten stronger and faster on her feet. more confident. confident enough that annie doesn't think she needs to ask... but she wants to hear taissa say it. "it's better, right?"

annie's triumphant grin is contagious; taissa finds herself smiling back. "better," she concedes. she honestly hadn't thought she'd actually enjoy extra drills with their new team member, but somebody had to get annie into winning shape, and who else was going to do it? lottie? jackie? don't make her laugh.

annie should be exhausted after the workout tai's been putting her through; instead she's full of energy, brighter than anything else in the gray afternoon light. taissa crosses her arms over her chest. her tone is almost playful. "fishing for compliments, summers?" now if annie keeps working on her footwork they could really have a shot this year. tai's proud of her, of the progress she's made in such a short time -- not that she'll be soppy enough to say it aloud.

instead she tosses annie her water bottle. "take a breather. hydrate.”
