How much does bootcamp change you?

In some ways a bunch, some ways not at all. You don’t lose who you are, but I think basic enhances it. I came out so much more focused and ready to do shit I needed to do. I knew who I wanted in my life and who I didn’t, I kicked out who didn’t need to be there (my then boyfriend.) But I was still the same sarcastic asshole who loved a good laugh, so there’s that

To add to that, sometimes it takes them a bit to get use to regular life again. My girlfriend sleeping and eating patterns were really off the first month she got home (she struggled to stay awake past 9pm) She was also a little quiet and awkward but after about a month she was back to her sarcastic talkative self.

These are a few pictures of my boyfriend while deployed in Afghanistan last fall. I thought about how at such a young age these men and women dedicate their whole lives to this passion even if that means being sent somewhere far away from their loved ones. They learn quickly that there’s so much more to life than the little things we complain about and take for granted on a daily basis. They form a brotherhood together that’s stronger than any bond, risking their life for the one fighting beside them. Being a girlfriend to a Marine has already taught me so much and opened my eyes of what these people are truly made of. His stories show me that it’s not about fighting a war, it’s about fighting for the person next to them. If this isn’t bravery I don’t know what is!

Their were a few times in the beginning where I had second thoughts about my relationship. Especially when she was away and I couldn't talk to her for days at a time. But then I thought about life without her and realized how much I love her and need her in my life, even if we're not physically together.

Is it rare for military couples to have big weddings? No offense to anyone that had a courthouse wedding but I really don't want one. I want to be able to have a big celebration and everything but I'm just worried that it's really rare for couples to do that in the military. Does anyone know how hard that would be? Cuz it'd be difficult for us to even do the whole "do the courthouse wedding and get married when he's out" b/c he's staying in for at least another 16 years

I do feel like it is somewhat rare since we on the topic. And a lot of people are working around leave, or trying to speed up the process before getting on new orders, or financial reasoning (due to the age) and everything in between. Plus weddings in general, are expensive. The average wedding costs $20,000. (yes, google that!)

My husband and I wanted our ceremony in a church and that was really important to have that moment with our families. Last minute we had to change our ceremony date due to my family flying in town and I didn’t want to change our anniversary date..so we went to the courthouse and had our ceremony and reception as planned 2 days later.

But courthouse weddings can be equally has beautiful and it depends on how much effort is put into the attire, or if you do a private wedding in a backyard or on the beach. I’ve shot a few intimate weddings and they’re definitely my favorite compared to some of the bigger weddings. But the hardest part is working around leave and what is needed for the marriage license but you’d have to check the requirements are and seeing if your SO being active duty military lets you waive some wait time, etc.

My cousin is in the air force and his and his now wife had a courthouse marriage, but then planned a big party/reception when he was granted leave.
