Yet another person I know just accepted me as an Octotrooper at face value.

This isn’t supposed to happen.

The world is supposed to give me pushback and knock sense into me and tell me I’m insane and that things like this can’t happen.

Instead I get constant validation.

This is not the first time I have run into something really close to Targ in the fandom and I’m starting to wonder if he’s like Marx and Bonzo where he’s in multiple canons... (Marx isn’t in my canon but a hell of a lot of other people know him)

Therianthropy and gears

Let's be honest: We all wished for some stuff relating to our 'types. Be it a t-shirt with a wolf on it, a necklace with an owl pendant or a so well known tail. But what many new therianthropes and onlookers get wrong these days is the fact that these gears aren't supposed to "make you a therianthrope". Let's see what they're actually used for.

Gear as a way to connect to your 'type

This is probably the most known reason for using and seeking for therianthropy related gear. But why does one need to connect with themselves? For once, mostly to feel more content and more in peace with themselves. But also sometimes to cope with their identity. It's ever been a decision. We haven't chosen to be therianthropes and to some it's just really annoying by times. So when their species dysphoria is very strong they sometimes use gear to reach a state of peace and calmness. I also met some who use gear to make their limbs more primonent. So to put it simple: Therian gear is simply used for making one feel better and good, themselves. :)

Gear doesn't make one a therianthrope

You don't need gear to be a therian. Being one means identifying as a nonhuman animal non-physically. It doesn't mean to put physical stuff on yourself that resembles your theriotype. That's just a sweet extra. Some never used gear. I myself have no gear as of now, mainly because I'm questioning but even those who aren't sometimes find them not so important. Why, you ask? Because everyone experiences their identity completely differently. The one needs gear to cope or feel better, the other feels content all the time with being human and a therianthrope.

Do what makes you feel good

Don't do what's expected of you. If you want to wear gear, it's great! If not, then it's great, too! You are doing just right with and without gear. Do what makes you comfy, okay? No one has the right to tell you what to do when it comes to things like self-expression.

I’m not Octariankin after all.

Tumblr’s Fictionkin community thrives on actively collecting “kintypes” from every source that gives you a weird feeling. But this is not what being kin is. When you remove that person from watching the show or playing the game that the character is from, the “kintype” goes away. This doesn’t happen with real kintypes, because a real kintype is a permanent identity.

As I have learned from people with over a decade of experience in the Kin community under their belt, the word for temporarily getting shifts of fictional characters is “FictionFlicker.” It has to do with feeling strong empathy for a character. It is not a kintype because it is not a permanent identity.

I have spent a lot of time away from Splatoon lately and I’ve found that my Octarian “identity” is starting to fade. I should have known something was wrong because I always glom onto “minion” characters and this game was no different.

I always see myself in these characters - from Kabirunrun to Team Skull Grunts - because where heroes are like the “popular” kids (relatable, funny, charismatic), minions are like the reject kids that everyone thinks it’s okay to pick on. I feel a connection because I myself was bullied, not because I am them. There is a difference.

I urge the fictionkin community of tumblr to remove themselves from their sources instead of saturating their lives with every aspect of it. Only then will you know if you are actually Kin or experiencing a Flicker.

I will update again if it turns out I’m wrong about this.

A lot of other Splatoonkin have backed me on this.... Octavio wrote a lot of DUBSTEP, no mistaking it for any other genre. The wubwubs and screechy synths made your head go all dizzy when you heard them!

I think Skrillex is closest to what he did but I’m also fairly certain Octavio’s beats have a 90s house influence to them that Skrillex’s music doesn’t.
