Today is Juneteeth. Let's talk about it. If you didn't know: Implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation was limited in areas still under Confederate control, delaying freedom for many, particularly in Texas. Freedom for enslaved people in Texas was officially announced on June 19, 1865, by Union troops in Galveston Bay, leading to the celebration of "Juneteenth."
The year is 2026. Racism breaths still in the systems of this country and in the hearts and minds of too many Americans. And frankly it pisses me off fam. It's insidious and prevalent and it must be reckoned with, healed, and eradicated.
White Americans today is a day of learning. Listen to the stories, to the current lived experiences of African Americans, especially women and those in LGBTQIA+ spaces. Support Black Americans, our businesses, our art, our activism.
My black sisters, nbs, and brothers, I wish you joy today. As a multi ethnic creator (Black/White), I have a dual responsibility. On the one hand, I share in the celebration that on this day we were finally all free. But my heart is heavy, too, because the violence feels non stop. There is so much work to be done.
But, it is also my job today to sit with my European ancestry, and the privilege my lighter skin affords. Today I, and the Tales Network celebrates with you. We also honor you.
