The thing isâŠ
âThings, the word she used when whatever it stood for was too distasteful or filthy or horrible to pass her lips.â âMargaret Atwood, The Handmaidâs Tale
Thing, as a word, is ubiquitous. A thing can be anything. Things are possessions. (Gather your things.) Theyâre clothing. (Put your things on.) Theyâre items of information. (He didnât tell me a thing.) Things are thoughts. (I have so many things on my mind.) Things arenât always real. (I think Iâm seeing things.)
Things are trends. (Stripes are the new thing everyone is wearing.) Theyâre deeds. (Look at all of the things sheâs accomplished so far.) A thing can be a circumstance or a situation (A wonderful thing happened today) and it can be a person or creature (That puppy is such a cute, little thing).
If you have a thing for someone or something, you like them or it a lot. (I think Alex has a thing for you.) But if you have a thing about something, you have a problem with it. (I have a thing about cheese; it makes me queasy.)
A thing can be something you love (Cosplaying is my thing), and it can also be something you detest (Get that thing away from me).
While everything is a thing of some sort, a thing is also nothing. It is both that which cannot be named (What is that thing youâre holding?), and also that which wonât be named. So the thing is, this word is one of the most useful and, arguably, most useless words in the English language.

go read :The Linguistics of LOL - What Internet vernacular reveals about the evolution of language - When two friends created the site I Can Has Cheezburger?, in 2007, to share cat photos with funny, misspelled captions, it was a way of cheering themselves up. They probably werenât thinking about long-term sociolinguistic implications. But seven years later, the âcheezpeepâ community is still active online, chattering away in lolspeak, its own distinctive variety of English. lolspeak was meant to sound like the twisted language inside a catâs brain, and has ended up resembling a down-South baby talk with some very strange characteristics, including deliberate misspellings (teh, ennyfing), unique verb forms (gotted, can haz), and word reduplication (fastfastfast). It can be difficult to master. One user writes that it used to take at least 10 minutes âto read adn unnerstandâ a paragraph. (âNao, itâz almost like a sekund lanjuaje.â) To a linguist, all of this sounds a lot like a sociolect: a language variety thatâs spoken within a social group, like Valley Girlâinfluenced ValTalk or African American Vernacular English. (The word dialect, by contrast, commonly refers to a variety spoken by a geographic groupâthink Appalachian or Lumbee.) Over the past 20 years, online sociolects have been springing up around the world, from Jejenese in the Philippines to Ali G Language, a British lingo inspired by the Sacha Baron Cohen character. Thereâs also Padonkaffsky, an aughts-era slang beloved by Russiaâs self-described âscumâ (they call themselves Padonkiâa garbling of podonok, the actual Russian word for âscumâ), with phonetic spellings, offensive language, and a popular meme involving outdoor sex and an inopportune bear. Israel has Fakatsa, a sociolect beloved by teen girlsâterms from which have popped up on baby clothes and menstrual-pain products. (via The Linguistics of LOL - Britt Peterson - The Atlantic)

A little comic I did for my wife for Christmas. Our son Max is autistic, and can only say a few words. That doesnât stop him from trying to communicate with us through his laughing, his crying, and his awesome hugs!
