eating in mexico as a Brit or central/northern European has gotta be like hearing music for the first time
This take is so tired and honestly just your average ignorant r/shitamericanssay.
I live in Central Europe (Germany, to be precise).
The amount of amazing Italian restaurants Germany has is probably unfathomable to people from the US. Same with Döner and other Turkish food choices. And more recently, I think we have to add Vietnamese cuisine to that list.
It’s rooted in culture, in history and in politics who came and comes here to operate restaurants.
This goes for almost every European country. Like let’s not beat around the bush: all that colonizing also led to all that trade and migration.
And, if somehow that is unfathomable to you:
I’ve been to a lot of countries(non extensive list from the last few years: China, India, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Japan, Cuba, Tanzania).
Food-wise, the US does not make my top 20. if it ever comes up the combination of food + US gets mentioned in these combinations:
- remember that nice polish restaurant in Boston? (Literally our neighbouring country, not exactly a cultural revolution to my palate).
- remember that nice brunch place near Zion national park? Remember when we had some actual good breakfast for once?
- god remember when we had to eat baguette for 2 weeks because it was basically the only bread at Walmart that didn’t contain sugar for some fucking reason?
- remember that one of those fast food joints (mcdonalds or burgerking)was doing a campaign back then where they served ice cream with bacon and fries with powdered sugar on top? And we were like „oh at this point it feels like you are just pretending. which marketing group came up with these food crimes???“
but yeah I haven’t been to Mexico yet even though it’s on the list of places I’d like to go to some day and their food probably slaps and I actually agree that for Mexican cuisine most places in Germany are probably a weak, boring approximation.
Also what can I say they aren’t so delulu and annoying as people from the US, apparently
When you hear about the Epstein files and you can't understand how people can be so monstrous, keep in mind that every monstrosity that happened on Epstein's island was legal just two lifetimes ago.
A monster kidnaps a barely pubescent girl, rapes and impregnates her, then traffics the baby. That seems like a horror story when you hear about it happening on Epstein's island. But it used to be legal. They used to do this openly. It was not only legal to do this, but also illegal to try to rescue the victims. The police enforced that. The police were originally created for the main purpose of enforcing that.
Rich people acting entitled to do whatever they want? Large numbers of people engaged in human trafficking? Police making the most monstrous people look like saints compared to them? That's nothing new. That's our country's history.
seeing the death toll of the school that was bombed just going up and up as they dig more girls out of the rubble throughout the day has been the most nauseating and maddening thing i have ever witnessed. everything feels meaningless. 108, and each one of them had lives, dreams, hopes, fears, families, and all of it's just fucking gone, buried in an instant, and the whole time these zionists are being as morally bankrupt and disgusting about it as they possibly can. These zionists are the most predatory, grotesque people on the planet. I have never in my life seen such rotten unashamed filth being spewed at people for daring to oppose the murder of girls. It was never about freedom for women, it was always about terror. Zionism is terrorism.
being a fandom girly but also a grown up is kind of funny.
Sat with some engineers at lunch today just talking about normal stuff, but then the new colleague mentioned that he is from Boston and my brain went: “that’s where Ilya used to live!!!”
And just like that I had “all the things she said” stuck in my head the whole afternoon lol
I swear I am totally normal about hiking and I didn’t just look through a topography of my area to figure out where to go for a walk to get the most elevation for training purposes.
I want to go hiking again sooo bad please body by fine during the check up tomorrow so we can go hiking again the alps miss uuuus 😭

In King Ludwig II’s defense, if I had basically infinite discretionary funds, was accountable to absolutely no one, and was king of a country full of picturesque landscapes, you couldn’t stop me from building myself a big gay fairytale castle on a mountaintop either.
This post is spreading and I feel bad about it because it contains misinformation, so for the record: Ludwig II did not in fact have infinite discretionary funds. He only acted as if he did. He never dipped into the public coffers for his building projects, but he spent his own fortune extravagantly and borrowed heavily from everyone he could think of. By 1885, the year before his death, he was 14 million marks in debt.
~ ✨✨ 14 million marks in debt ✨✨~
I always find this inspiring because try to name another prince of a German state. What did the rulers of Hamberg do? The Grand Duchy of Hesse? Gone with the wind, no one knows them anymore. But Mad Lad Ludwig built a top 5 most famous castle in the entire world. Money is fake, castles are real. Go broke and die like a winner.
EXCUSE ME, this is still wrong. He built 3.
Neuschwanstein, literally the inspo for the castles in Disney's Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella
Hohenschwangau, the practical castle
Linderhof, the final, the smallest, and the MOST fab.
Every room is incredible and the park is beautiful, but shoutout to The Bedroom, the biggest room
The Hall of Mirrors, which he probably wandered by candle light because he was a serious night owl
The Dining Room, with a wishing table that lowers to the kitchen, and rises with a crank, returning magically full of food
The Venus Grotto, constructed for the sole use of Ludwig to larp to his heart's content
A full artificial cave, it features a waterfall, fake stalactites, and a custom-designed swan boat floating on an artificial lake. The first electricity in Bavaria was generated here, to change the colors of the stage lights and to power Ludwig's fountain and wave machine.
Now THAT'S ~ ✨✨ 14 million marks in debt ✨✨~
I love that- and I cannot emphasize this enough -none of this was tax money
the public paid for zero of his fairytale castle hobby
rare European monarch W as far as spending money lavishly goes
As a Bavarian who has been to all of these castles I CANNOT put into words how much misinformation is contained here.
Starting with the fact he actually bankrupted Bavaria, which was a significant step to Bavaria becoming united with Prussia.
This was a significant thing that, uh, made everyone’s lives just WAY WORSE than they needed to be.
Also WW1 happened afterwards, so he kind of roped Bavaria into that one.
ALSO HOHENSCHANGAU WAS ONE OF HIS DAD‘S CASTLES AND HE JUST INHERITED IT AND NEITHER OF THEM BUILT IT.
IT DATES BACK TO THE ELEVENTH CENTURY.
Tumblr get a grip and stop spreading misinformation I AM BEGGING
The ethics of Bolaire's parasitism is so fascinating to me, and especially fan reactions to it. Because unless any of the other characters are vegetarian, which they don't appear to be, they consume other living beings far more often than Bolaire does. He seems to choose a new body every once in a while, whereas the other characters might be consuming parts of a body every day.
No one in the audience commented on the life of the sheep eaten in the shepherd's pie. It's purpose in this world was to die so that omnivore humanoids may live. But Bolaire yoinking the body of a murderous thief relishing in the cruelty of his work is met with revulsion. When really in the grand scheme of life in the world, why is one more moral than the other. The sheep probably didn't even hurt anyone. It really just desired to eat grass, get some good rest, be safe and warm, socialize, and mate.
And I say this as a thoughtful omnivore. I do try to consider the lives of the plants, animals, and fungus I devour, and the lives of those who grew and procured them for me. My partner is mainly vegetarian, occasionally pescatarian, and lived with vegans for years so we eat that way a lot, too. I feel octopus are too intelligent to want to eat, but for completely arbitrary cultural reasons feel differently about pigs. I stopped eating quinoa when I learned about the horrors of the food systems that put it on my table in the Pacific Northwest instead of its indigenous lands. I keep a painting near my kitchen that merges the imagery of a human heart and a sprouting bean and reads "Con Respecto y Gratitud para los campesinos que nos proporcionan todas las fruias y verduras." [With Respect and Gratitude for the farmers who provide us with all the fruits and vegetables.] It reminds me daily of the human hands that even my plants passed through. Bolaire harvests his own food.
On a zoomed out utilitarian level, it seems like a magical artifact parasitical theater mask with a vigilante code of ethics about his food is probably overall better for the state of life on the planet than everything it took to raise industrial chickens, grind up the unwanted bits, and dehydrate them into the deliciously horrible noodle soup packet I'm currently enjoying. Besides the chicken, how many other humans suffered dire hardships in that process? Our revulsion is mainly rooted in the fear of the apex predator that something may want to eat us the way we eat others.
And then there's the whole child actor angle of the way that acting industries devour actors for their own ends. Sometimes the roles subsume the people who play them, or even their off-camera public persona becomes more real than their own private self. A puppet for the role that The Public needs of them in the great play of culture. Especially to highlight and change the systems as they are.
As Ursula K. Le Guin put it, "Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope. We’ll need writers who can remember freedom — poets, visionaries — realists of a larger reality."
A few people remember who she was in everyday life, alive in her own body. Most of us will remember the public mask of the part she played in shaping speculative fiction and the whole publishing industry to be open to more than just the imaginations of comfortable cishet white men. A woman fascinated by the draw to utopian ideals and also who is sacrificed to that dream. Her outlook very shaped by the Tao Te Ching and the mask of the author Lao Tzu passed down into legend long after the myth ate the man. Legacy in its own way a form of cultural parasitism that feeds on those it needs to sustain its ongoing existence.
Absolutely fascinating and captivating stuff.

No one will care about this but um actually 🤓☝️ that is STILL wrong.
Homeboy did not build Hohenschwangau at all, it’s an old medieval castle that his father, Maximilian II restored and then lived in.
He DID build Linderhof- or more like yassified his dads old hunting mansion until it was absolutely unrecognisable, because the pre-revolution french aristocracy was his special interest and he wanted it to look like baby Versailles.
And obviously everyone knows Neuschwanstein, which, and I cannot stress this enough, WASNT EVEN FINISHED. He never got to live in it (if you have the time please look into his weird weird death it’s so fascinating to me). The only people to ever walk these halls are tourists, which is incredibly fitting because it’s about as substantial as Disneyland.
