Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
by Fatimah Asghar Lets face it, cultural appropriation sucks. Weâve all seen white people with dreads stomping around like they own the place, or drunk hipsters at music festivals with headdresses and bindis. As people of color it can⌠Continue Reading â
Hello my extraordinary viewers! Hope all is well... because things are going to get even better AFTER YOU READ THIS AMAZING ARTICLE!Â
This week I wanted to focus on a question that I find myself always approaching & pondering over.. The question of can People of Colour culturally appropriate each otherâs cultures?Â
This article shows why it might be acceptable if POC do, do this & what might we think about when we are approaching this act. This article is also RICH IN LANGUAGEÂ
KEY ELEMENTS/ QUOTES I LOVED FROM THIS ARTICLE:
âCultural appropriation occurs when members of a dominant group take elements and symbols of another culture for their own economic or social gain while simultaneously devaluing and silencing the bodies, opinions and voices of the oppressed culture.â
â..The key here was that we were active participants in celebrating each other, not erasing each otherâ
âThat might be considered by some to be appropriative, but for me and other individuals of diasporic identity, it is a necessary part of survival and sanity in Americaâ
â...The awareness that communities of color have historically been reliant on each other for survival in America...â
First of all, this articleâs definition of Cultural Appropriation speaks about silenced bodied & voices, which I have never seen written before. It really hits home, as I see Cultural Appropriation as a way of muting people from that specific culture & speaking for them.Â
She speaks about the Diaspora- of displaced communities. For instance for immigrants, the only way to survive and fight the discrimination is celebrate their culture & for minority groups to help each other in this showing of their cultures to collectively say, HEY WE ARE HERE... YOUR RACISM WILL NOT MUTE OUR VOICES. Such a beautiful way of looking at POC appropriating other POC cultures, almost saying it is not appropriating then.. it is a way of SURVIVAL, CELEBRATION AND SENSE OF HISTORICAL RELIANCE ON EACH OTHER.. INSTEAD OF LETTING THE COLONIZERS DESTROY US BY ASSIMILATING US BY FORCE INTO WHITE SOCIETAL VALUES.Â
Anyways, please check this article out! Very fresh view on the Qs of cultural appropriation.. specifically in-between POC. Let me know your thought :)

Cultural appropriation versus cultural appreciation, an illustrated guide
Hello my beautiful viewers! This weeks post comes a day early.. LUCKY FOR YOU!Â
Alright, so first of all... I looovvee this short, but amazing article, because it brings into light something about cultural appropriation that most articles tend not to touch on.
The author gives you a couple questions you can ask yourself when thinking, âHEY AM I APPROPRIATING OR APPRECIATING THIS CULTURE BY WEARING THIS RAD CLOTHING?â.
THE QUESTION THAT STOOD OUT FOR ME WAS.. #3- WHO MADE THE PRODUCT AND WHO IS SELLING IT?
...âIf what youâre wearing is authentic or if profit goes back to the original cultural creatorsâ
This was refreshing to read as it gets you thinking .. hey if Iâm wearing a bag that has a First Nations symbol on it.. is it authentic, was it made by someone in that community & WILL THE MONEY I PAY FOR THIS GO BACK TO THE PERSON WHO MADE THIS ( the person from that culture ). In a sense itâs asking yourself, am I APPRECIATING a culture, by supporting it or am I exploring it and misreporting it if I go to ...ex. Urban Outfitters and buy a bag that is âINSPIRED BYâ/ LOOKS LIKE A STEREOTYPE OF A CULTURE .
Anyways.. please check the whole article out & also take a look at the two articles this article links on the bottom of the page.. I will be talking about them next week, as they also have very refreshing looks on Culture Appropriation!Â
PLEASE ENJOY & REMEMBER.. U CAN ENJOY SOMETHING, BE CRITICAL & KNOW WHERE THE LINES LAY WHEN IT COMES TO CULTURAL APPROPRIATION! My view is, if you are not sure about something.. either do your research or just let it be, as it may be offensive & you may be âreferences a culture that is experiencing or has experienced injustice, violence, or a traumatic colonial past, appropriating the culture can offensively repeat patterns of unequal give and takeâ - Browntourage, Mo Juicy ( this articleâs author )
-T
How to move past the finger pointing.
Alright so I have manyyyyy mixed feeling about this article right here. I am straight up just going to start off with copy/pasting some quotes from the author that ENRAGED me here.... ALSO WHILE READING THESE QOUTES, KEEP IN MIND THE AUTHOR IS OF EUROPEAN DESENT- THE AUTHOR IS WHITE AND SAYING ALL OF THIS.
âAt my house, getting dressed is a daily act of cultural appropriation, and Iâm not the least bit sorry about itâ
âI step out of the shower in the morning and pull on a vintage cotton kimono, [big deal]â
âThe idea that I ought to stay in the cultural lane I was born intoâoutrageousâ
âBut please, letâs banish the idea that appropriating elements from one anotherâs cultures isâin itselfâproblematicâ
âThe cultural appropriation police, who jealously track who âownsâ what and instantly jump on transgressorsâ
So she says all of this ( in my view- IGNORANT ) stuff, but hold on... she goes on to tell you how some things are very very wrong to do/ educate you...
âBlackface is never cool-Someone elseâs culture or raceâor an offensive idea of itâshould never be a costume or the butt of a jokeâ
âSacred artifacts are not accessoriesâ
... SLOW CLAPS FOR THESE *sarcasm to the max.. YAY IM SO GLAD YOU THINK THESE ARE WRONG, NO WAY, WOW EDUCATE US *more sarcasm. BUT WAIT, HOW CAN U NOT SEE THAT STEALING ANOTHER PERSONâS CULTURE IS THE SAME AS DRESSING IN A KIMONO- KNOWING YOU ARE CULTURALLY APPROPRIATING, BUT THINKING IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO DO SO AND OHÂ âBID DEALâ.Â
Then she goes on to say that Cultural Appropriation is wrong but...
some things are just ... âcultural appropriation done rightâ. WHAT. WHAT ARE YOU SAYING.
also... some more âextraordinary commentsâ...
âCultural appropriation can sometimes be the savior of a cultural product that has faded awayâ ..NO IT RECREATES HISTORY THAT IS INCORRECT- WHITE WASHED IT.. RECOLONIZES IT ONCE AGAIN, YOU AS A WHITE PERSON HAVE NO RIGHT TO âBRING BACK SOMEONE ELSEâS CULTUREâ. Especially with the privilege you have and the history of white colonization & the damage it did to minorities & their cultures!
âSharing values, sharing visions, sharing the economics, I think itâs the easiest way to workâ...âThis is the magic of style. Itâs the magic of art. Itâs the magic of the design.â âAnd itâs a magic that Iâd be happy to appropriate for my closetâ
FOR REAL? IT IS NOT SHARING. DID U ASK THE COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE THAT YOU ARE APPROPRIATING FROM, WERE YOU INVITED TO WEAR THEIR CLOTHING, DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT CLOTHING REPRESENTS AND THE HISTORY TIED TO IT? SORRY HONEY, IT IS THE OPPOSITE OF MAGIC.. ITS THE REAL WORLD of WHITE PRIVILEGE & IGNORANCE.Â
Anyways, this article is so âbeautifullyâ ignorant as it says oh cultural appropriation is not okay.. but then saying wait but it is. The very title of it saying culture approbation is either âvery wrongâ or âvery rightâ.. contradicts itself. Cause well, sorry to burst bubbles, but cultural appropriation is just VERY WRONG.Â
Enough of me expressing my anger and trying to make it into..what a prof of mine calls.. âcreative angerâ. Which is essentially getting mad, but in a way to make change, raise awareness and put your anger to creative use. So anyways, my amazing viewers.. embrace you sadness and anger on this topic & leave me comments or just simply put your emotions to extraordinary use!! Hope you enjoyed this piece & critic the specific quotes I have placed in these comments :)

For this week, I am going to post something a little different from cultural appropriation! It has more to do with stereotyping people who identify as Asian & being racist in a celebratory way that is just wrong. Â
This video is hilarious! This actually happens! I am personally a woman of colour & I have gotten asked âwhere are you REALLY fromâ numerous times, then been stereotyped right after based on what I say.
BEST PART ABOUT THIS VIDEO .. is when she switches back onto him & ends on âhmm Iâm weird? Must be a Korean thing!â... as a way to critic his racism!Â
Please enjoy this little comedic/ but true.. piece!Â

This is not a homage. Itâs so freaking offensive and there is so much cultural appropriation of Asian cultures going on here despite the title being called âPrincess of China.â Orientalism/white saviour complex AND treating all Asian cultures at the same? Are you freaking kidding me?
Still unclear to me why they called it Princess of China. How orientalist is that, considering China is never even mentioned in the song. Thereâs just this sort of vaguely asian sounding guitar, which isâŚwhat? Supposed to make it clear the song is about China considering all Asian countries are the same, right? White people LOVE appropriating asian culture, and playing the role of asians, and I guess Coldplay is no different. Love all those nameless asians in the background, standing around as you butcher a ton of Asiatic cultures, Coldplay! And Rihanna doesnât get a pass here either. Ugh. People today.Â
EDIT: I thought I would add some more of my thoughts after articulating them on a facebook conversation I had about this - these quotes are directly taken from there:
âI think appropriating other peopleâs cultures without the slightest bit of respect for them is racist. And I also think that this kind of appropriation (which is done almost overwhelmingly and exclusively by white people, I might add) has been so built into our own culture and our own media, that we donât even think about it as racism. That is really problematic. Just because something like this happens all the time, and just because weâre really used to seeing white people take from other cultures willy nilly, doesnât mean that it isnât incredibly problematic. Racism doesnât just happen when someone says to themselves âI hate Asian people, lets shit all over their culture because theyâre inferiorâ. Racism, I think actually most racism, happens when people simply continue to take part in cultural appropriation and ignorance like this, without necessarily bad intent behind those actions. Iâm sure Coldplay didnât mean to offend anyone, you know? But in a culture where black, asian, and native roles in television and film are systematically erased and re-cast with white people, and when it is hard to name even on two hands, significant asian actors in mainstream television and film (not to mention of course, other ethnicities), itâs just shitty to see one more example of white people picking and choosing from asian culture because they think itâs exotic and cool, and casting asian people in the background to make it authentic. As a final note, lets all appreciate for a moment that throughout all of the planning for this video, all of the costume fittings and all of the actual shooting, no one fucking realized that geishas, which is what Rihanna is portraying in this video, are actually FROM JAPAN. THEY ARE FROM JAPAN. Jesus, would a wikipedia search have killed somebody?? I expect a lot from people, I know. But that is like the lowest possible expectation level. And they didnât even meet that.â
and
You donât need to intend to be racist to actually act racist. I agree that intent is important, and thatâs why in a situation like this, Iâm not going to come out and say 'COLDPLAY ARE HUGE RACISTS, THEY HATE ASIAN PEOPLEâ. But not knowing about this stuff is not an excuse. Being unintentionally ignorant is still ignorance. These guys have huge media exposure and a ton of influence, and when you spend hundreds of thousands (or more?) of dollars on a video where you 'accidentallyâ confuse China with Japan? No, Iâm not okay with that. It literally would have taken them 15 seconds to look it up. Also, sorry, just to clarify something else: I think itâs important to note that all cultures obviously borrow heavily from other cultures, and there isnât (necessarily) anything racist about that at all. Especially in fashion, for example, which really brings trends from other cultures to the mainstream here in North America. But there is a really big difference between dressing up like a Geisha (which Iâve already explained is problematic in that they think itâs from China) and dressing up 'like an Asian personâ, which is what theyâve done with Rihannaâs makeup here - the eyebrows and the eye makeup have been used to heavily imitate the 'slantâ that is really commonly associated with Asian facial features, which I think is really problematic. Thereâs just a lot of cultural appropriation happening here, which I think is different Tim from what you mention about general cultural stereotyping that sort of happens everywhere in all cultures. Obviously cultural stereotypes exist, and not all of them stem from racist or colonialist intentions, but more from, as you say, simply not having a nuanced view of those cultures. But making a music video where you turn those cultural stereotypes (incorrect cultural stereotypes I might add, which I think is the really important thing here, considering nothing about this video screams China) into a cultural and artistic site that millions of people are going to watch? I think that changes the situation a little bit. And hey, I agree with you that this is not necessarily something that a lot of people are going to care about - I mean, it is after all just a music video. But letting cultural appropriation and unintentional ignorance reproduce at a mass level simply because no one thought it was important enough to challenge, is passively accepting it. And I donât accept it. Coldplay can do so much better! This seems like such a cop out - they have the ability to be so much more creative, without being ignorant. Even unintentionally.
If you have not realized by now, I tend to do posts every Wednesday or Thursday... (other than last week, when it was a bit delayed- SORRY!)....so, THIS WEEKâS POST IS HERE A BIT EARLIER DUE TO ME KNOWING I WILL BE A TOO OVERWHELMED WITH STUDYING THIS WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY! Wish me luck readers :)!  Anyways, enjoy this beautiful critical piece WRITTEN BY ANOTHER BLOGGER ON THEIR PAGE on why âPrincess of Chinaâ By Coldplay ft. Rihanna, is highly offensive and culturally appropriating Asian culture! Also an EXTRAORDINARY weaving in of how âOrientalistâ this video is & how it exemplifies the White Saviour Complex!  This INTERSECTIONAL ANALYSIS of this music video was so eyeopening on how easily cultures can be misrepresented and appropriated unintentionally (maybe?) in media...that I HAD TO SHARE IT AND MAKE IT THIS WEEKâS POST! Have a blast & see you in two Thursdays my beautiful people! *Ps. Have a fabulous time searching for Halloween customs & while you do this.. remember.. no dressing up as cultures/ races/ religions please! YOU DO YOU, but as long as it does not offend or hurt anyone! You all know this very well & I am sure you will all come up with extraordinary costumes ( if you are dressing up in any sort/ or even celebrating Halloween )!  -T
Lauren Southern of TheRebel.media loves Halloween, but not the inevitable whining about "cultural appropriation" when someone dares to wear an "offensive" ethnic costume.
In the spirit of Halloween and Cultural Appropriation...
YAY (*intense sarcasm) FOR PROBLEMATIC PEOPLE AND PEOPLE WHO THINK REVERSE RACISM & SEGREGATION EXISTS.. THRUÂ âRECEIVING HATEâ FOR âCULTURALLY APPROPRIATINGâ. Just no.
Please watch Lauren Southernâs video and get enraged with me. After her âWhy I am not a Feministâ video, I thought she was done. But I had spoken too early...
I acknowledge by posting this I am re-circulating this ignorant and uneducated video around, but I think itâs key to sometimes view the other side and critic it & see how ridiculous some people can get.
-With Halloween coming up.. what would really set us up for this event.. is (get ready for more sarcasm) LAUREN SOUTHERNâs view on halloween customs and HOW CULTURAL APPROPRIATION IS GOING TO MAKE THIS EVENT INTO âA MESSâ and that it is âNONSENSE". SHE PLACES CULTURAL APPROPRIATION INTO QUOTATIONS (with her fingers)- making this sound hypothetical and ridiculous.
-She laughs and thinks itâs ridiculous that we donât think we CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE WHITE CULTURE OR THAT WHITE CULTURE IS FETISHIZED.
-All I have to say about that is WHAT THE... SOME NEWS FOR YOU... REVERSE RASISM IS NOT A THING. YOU CANNOT CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE WHITE CULTURE. White privilege. White people cannot be oppressed or feel that their culture is being stolen.. JUST NO. âTHIS WHITE CULTURE IS BASED ON STOLEN ASPECTS OF OTHER CULTURES.. BUILT ON COLONIZATION. REVERSE RACISM CAN ONLY EXIST IF U GET IN A TIME MACHINE AND CHANGE HISTORY 200%.
-Her definition of Cultural approbation is extremely innorect .. she uses the word ADOPTION AND NOT STOLEN. HUGE PROBLEM RIGHT THERE.. THIS âADOPTIONâ INDICATED THAT permission was given.
-Yes, if you think a âdressâ from another culture is beautiful.. that is fine, but you have no right to wear it as a custom when you have no idea what cultural weight or significance it has. *The photo of an actress dressed up as ââcrazy eyesâ from the show Orange is the New Black⌠if you look closely she has painted her face black.. she is doing BLACKFACE. If that is not offensive, I donât know what is. As a Persian-Candadian, my skin is darker than the âwhite skinâ and it is not something I can just get up in the morning and rub off. I CANNOT TAKE OFF MY COLOUR. GUESS WHAT âthe white actress in the photoâ CAN.. SHE CAN WASH THE PAINT OFF.. YOU STILL HAVE WHITE PRIVILEGE.. MANY DONâT CAUSE THEY ARE NOT WHITE. -She separates stereotyping with cultural appropriate, when in fact.. when we culturally appropriate a âGieshaâ for instance, we steal a cultureâs identity and stereotype it. We show that no, this is what they all look like/ should look like.
-YES IT IS DANGEROUS WHEN A RACE HAS A MONOPOLY OVER OVERS. WHITE MONOPOLY. WHITE CULTURE AND IDEALS SET THE NORM, SO WHOEVER ISNâT WHITE IS THE OTHER. PEOPLE WHO IDENTITY AS ASIAN, ABORIGINAL, FIRST NATIONS, AFRICAN-AMAERICAN, ETC. (all other ethnic minorities) ...CANNOT HAVE PRIVILEGE OVER WHITE PEOPLE. Ethnic minorities did not colonize, they did not steal, they didnât make their skin colour neutral and yours coloured, they did not force you into residential schools, poverty, make you idealize their skin colour⌠they didnât other you⌠the list goes onâŚanyways, THE WHITE RACE DID⌠ACKNOWLEDGE THAT.
NO IT IS NOT RE-SEGREGATION WHEN YOU CANNOT STEAL AND EMBODY ANOTHER CULTUREâS VALUES & WEAR IT AS A âCUSTOMâ. *âSegregation is the separation of humans into racial groups in daily life.â -Taken from Wikipedia -Guess what? Racial groups do not include white people.. this separating is done by white people.. since âwhiteâ is seen as a transparent, neutral colour & âothersâ are OTHERED.
The sign⌠just like the signs that were up in front of washrooms, restaurants, back WHEN MARTIN LUTHER KING was FIGHTING AGAINST SEGREGATION.. BECAUSE BLACK PEOPLE WERE NOT ALLOWED IN THE SAME AREAS AS WHITE PEOPLE/ COULD NOT VOTE BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT CONSIDERED HUMANS UNDER THE LAW.. History has not been deleted, it cannot be⌠but you, Lauren Southern are erasing it and making it seem that in fact, White people have always been deprived of their rights and that it is âsegregationâ for them not to be able to dress up as a e.g. a âGieshaâ for halloween. *Also there is a difference if.. for instance you are invited to your Punjabi friendsâ wedding and she gets you a traditional sari/ suite/ etc. and asks you to wear it as a braidâs mate. This is when you are given permission & you are not wearing the suit to ridicule or just wear it for aesthetic beauty. Do you see now? In this instance, you are given permission and are not stealing. THIS IS 200% different from wearing customs for Halloween.Â
*What she says âoh it is cultural appreciationâ... it is in fact, sorry to burst bubbles, cultural appropriation.Â
I JUST REALIZED.. This post is getting way too long & you all are probably wanting to write your own comments now!!! So go ahead, let me know your thoughts!
Just a little notes, I do not hate Lauren Southern. I am just shocked at how undereducated and ignorant she is. She also does not speak at all about white privilege or the fact that she, herself is white. My thoughts are that she just needs to educate herself and stop enacting racism and promoting this âstolen actionâ of cultural appropriation. Also, I am not hating on white people, I am just expressing how we need to acknowledge history and what colonization has done. That is all! :) Hope you got just as fired-up and mad!Â

This video expresses the feelings of 4 individuals that identify as Asian-Americans... about..... CULTURAL APPROPRIATION of Asian Cultures & specifically of the Giesha, racism, and even ASIAN-AMERICANS appropriating Asian culture and just straight out ignorance. HERE ARE SOME QUOTES FROM THE VID THAT REALLY STOOD OUT FOR ME:
âAsian-Americans become almost Americanized- you end up appropriating yourself [ Asian culture that is not yours ].â
âAsian-Americans [ sometimes end up ] fetishizing a part of Asian culture yourself, that your so distant from.â
â [Culture appropriation] implies that Asian equals this.â
âAsian is a multifaceted concept, we live out what that means realistically.. everyday.â
âIt is ignorance.â
âMore diverse stories need to be told.â
HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY THIS VID WITH A FRESH PERSPECTIVE! LEAVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS :)

VICTORIAâS SECRET⌠THIS IS 200% NOT OKAY...
Before I start my rant about this âThe Sexy Little GEISHAâ, here is a quick explanation ( from Wikipedia) of what a Geisha ACTUALLY IS..
âGeisha (č¸č ?), geiko (č¸ĺ) or geigi (č¸ĺŚ) are traditional Japanese female entertainers who act as hostesses and whose skills include performing various Japanese arts such as classical music, dance, games and conversation, mainly to entertain male customers.â
ALRIGHT NOW BACK TO This âpieceâ on Victoriaâs SecretâŚ
This is modelled by a Swedish model Candice Swanepoel.
I CANNOT BELIEVE Victoriaâs Secret is CULTURALLY APPROPRIATING and COMMODIFYING something that is apart of traditional Japanese culture.
As Olivia Fleming BEAUTIFULLY said in one of her posts, This is âA troubling attempt to sidestep authentic representation of a culture and opt instead for racialized fetishizing against Asian womenâ. She continued by explaining why this is OFFENSIVE and sexualizes an extraordinary culture. Her words exactly are, âDonning a âsexy Geishaâ outfit to get the ball rolling in the bedroom remains offensive because it confirms a paradigm in which Asian people and their culture can be modified and sexualized and appropriated for the benefit of the West. [This makes] Asian women hypersexualized objects of fantasyâ.
In my opinion, not only does this fetishize Japanese woman, but also places a mental image of what Geisha woman look like.. WHICH IS FALSE. This places a WHITE image, a certain body image and a hyper sexualized image in our minds. This helps Japanese woman in being CONFINED in their expression, thinking that this is what they should look like and if they donât look like this⌠they have failed their image. OH AND HOLD UP.. WHAT DOES a Swedish, White model know about this culture or what a Geisha even is?! I LOVED HOW Phil Yu ( the voice behind AngryAsianMan.com blog) puts itâŚ.. âHooray for exotic orientalist bullshit.â #straightup -Yup, this also implies that Western views are more superior to the âold schoolâ, âlameâand âbackwardsâ thoughts of the Japanese Geisha. HOLD ON, BACK IT UP⌠THE GEISHA IS NOT A WESTERN THING. WHAT IN THAT ORIENTALIST MIND OF YOURS, MAKES YOU THINK âYOUR GEISHAâ IS âBETTERâ. Ug, sorry my beautiful viewers.. Iâm just getting a bit heated :) -Also a quick mention of the first picture I posted.. LOVE IT because it implies that Cultural Appropriation is a misrepresentation of a culture, their values and A STOLEN AND REDEFINED thing from another tradition. I admire how it says that âweâre a culture, not a costumeâ. This really ties in with the Victoriaâs Secret picture, as it shows how hurtful and ridiculous it is to portray a tradition/ cultural clothing A) FALSELY and B) ERASING IT AND REDEFINING IT ON THEIR OWN TERMS. In the first photo, the girl looks sad and hurt⌠MAYBE CAUSE SHE FEELS DEFINED BY SOMEONEâS IGNORANCE & FEELS LIKE HER IDENTITY IS BEING SHOWN IN AN INCORRECT MANNER.
In all, GOOD JOB MEDIA.. GOOD JOB VICTORIAâS SECRET.. MAYBE, JUST MAYBE THINK BEFORE YOU DO THINGS, shhesh.
Hah. Okay, I am done my freakout. Hope all your amazing people enjoyed this! Please leave me comments & your thoughts. As you know, all are welcome!

First, that is an epic article. And the way that it moves from orientalist appropriation from white to non-asian POC to asian POC appropriating asian cultures that arenât their own is compelling: I was recently called out for having worn a karakul hat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karakul_(hat)) (a friend deflected it by saying that it was a reference to Soviet hats, but Soviet politicians perhaps did the same thing that I did). In any case, itâs uncommon that I hear people talk about asian POC appropriation other asian cultures, so itâs striking to read about it here.
MY RESPONSE:Â September 26, 2015 â 1:19 pm
Thank you so much for your extraordinary comment and sharing that personal story! In particular, I thought the last section of Asian POC appropriating things of other Asian cultures was unique. It is so much more prevalent when you see a a non-Asain POC do such a thing, but you tend to view appropriation being done by POC as more passive. As for your personal experience, I found it quit interesting how that history was linked with that traditional hat and the comment made by your friend. We sometimes appropriate out of ignorance, but its sharing that experience of wrongdoing and acknowledging it that really makes a difference! I personally struggle sometimes with seeing that fine line that lingers between appreciation and appropriation. Thanks for being open, commenting and sharing such a recent personal experience on here!
