Normal… That’s actually pretty abnormal when you think about it, huh? For us? I’ll have to visit Gene to make sure he’s okay, then… I don’t think Lin and Naru are very good with babies… Actually, Ayako, what about you? Are you alright with them?

Mai chan, have you ever asked Naru for help on your homework? What did he say if you have asked him for help?

Well....... -she makes a face, then hushes up like she's sharing a secret-I know he's the most intelligent person I know, but if you were around him as much as I was you'd understand-- Even when I'm not doing homework he talks to me like I'm so stupid!! I mean, of course there's a gap in brainpower, but... A-anyway, I've thought about it, but he is perpetually busy with work and he probably doesn't want to be bothered with it and augh I can just hear him already!

-a bad Naru impression with a relatively spot-on approximation of his usual cold tone- "Why would I waste my time with a hopeless student?"

What do you think, anon? I do have a big test coming up so maybe I should just swallow my pride and try to ask him...

"I don't have to say 'please' for my tea, Mai. I'm paying you to make it." Naru said in his usual cold tone

"W-well, when you put it like that," she started, a little taken aback, then remembered her point and made a face at him. "I’ll make it regardless, but I’m just saying it’d be nice if you used ‘please’… Do you know what that means? Nice?" She was teasing, but she did always harbor the hope that one day Naru would grow to be a little more polite… Fat chance.

Unable to come up with a sufficient smart reply to that as usual, she grumbled, hopefully out of ear shot (but she never knew, with him.) and went into the kitchen. Mai was glad the workaholic was taking a break, at least, even if his notion of ‘breaks’ included reading, reading, reading, too. She supposed that was just how he was, rudeness and all, pondering it over tea preparation. Not too long after, she came out with a cup and set it on the little table. “Anything else, boss?” she asked, decidedly giving up on her short-lived mission to get him to give into conventional kindnesses.

As Mai walked away Naru could help but smile slightly. Her grumbling and obvious pout meant he got what he wanted. Oh, how he enjoyed teasing her. She thought he never had fun, and complained about his workaholic tendencies often. However, unbeknownst to her he was having fun, even though it was at her expense.  When Mai finally returned and set the cup of tea down in front of him, he made a point of not looking up. “No, that will be all.” he paused hoping for another reaction then said “Thank you.”

She was ready to smile sweetly then turn back to her desk and fume without another word-- Naru did always hear. She was miffed by the dismissal as usual, but as she turned on her heels she heard the thank you, calm and clear, and turned back around, just staring for a moment with an almost silly amount of gratification and a triumphant smile. Taking it upon herself to be just a little bit more annoying further, she took a step forward and leaned over, beaming. "That's not so hard, is it? That sort of thing makes everyone a little happier~" She didn't really want to leave, and so as she straightened up again, she let her curiosity loose, conversationally. At this point she didn't even mind when Naru cut off their conversations; it was always worth the risk since sometimes he'd indulge her. "Aren't they supposed to be very polite in England, too?" She supposed even if the whole world was ultra polite, Naru wouldn't be.

"Mai-chan~ Noll's giving you grief again?"

"Well… Ehe, that’s just how he is, right? I’m starting to get it… there’s no hope for a narcissist of that standard…"

"Help?" She said, only slightly skeptical. Then again, Gene had scarcely if ever led her astray, and he was sort of a Naru expert (as much as one could be, of course.) And she did want to be of help in any way possible. She leaned over a little as if they were sharing a secret. "You know how I could do that?"

"Well, I don’t know if you’ve notice, but he seems to listen to you more than he listens to me." Which was true, whether his idiot scientist of a brother wanted to admit it or not. "I honestly have no doubt that if anyone were going to set his manners in motion, that it would be you." He smiled lightly, leaning forward as she did and ruffled her hair.

"He does?" Mai asked, bewildered by the thought of Naru really listening to anybody. He gave in sometimes, but only on his own terms. "No way." She couldn't help but return the smile, though, and she could admit to liking the hair ruffling. Naru was lucky to have such a good older brother. "Are you saying that just to be nice to me, Gene? Don't get my hopes up about Naru the impossible! I could talk at him for hours and he'd probably only hear what he wants to hear..."

Naru does plenty of odd things even though he's supposedly dignified. -huff-I think if I let it slip he miiiight be upset with me, though. His image is very important to him, after all.

Well, Naru and his brother keep getting hit with M!As, Gene is currently a baby, and at one point Gene and Kitten had what seemed like a serious awkward-flirtation sort of thing going on, but other than that it’s been pretty normal around here.

hiya Ren, did you have a nice halloween?

*nods eagerly* Uh huh!  Dad gave Mommy the night off so she could take me trick-or-treating!  I dressed up as Einstein.  Mommy wanted me to be a sheet ghost but Dad and I said that was silly.  Okay, Dad said it was idiotic and that we deal with actual ghosts on a regular basis, so why on earth would he want a sheet ghost around and I said it was silly and told her I’d rather be Einstein.

Oh, looks like I... fell asleep at work again. You'd think I'd get rid of that habit by now... Heh... where's everyone? No one woke me up? No way Naru would let me sleep on the desk. He must be out...? With Gene or Lin-san? Hmm.

Well, it's not my fault everything's been so slow lately, not to mention all the tests and work! Aah, my poor head hurts. What did I miss...

Ack, right, right, reorganizing the case files again. Better finish up before he gets back~ Geez, why does he have to be so picky about it...
