macario (1960), widely considered one of the greatest mexican films ever made, is a simple but elegant production. the story is, fundamentally, a fairy tale, with the narrative structure of a fairy tale moralizing against greed: the eponymous protagonist wants nothing more than to eat a turkey all to himself, desiring it so strongly that he refuses to share with either the devil or god himself. death, who appears in the form of a fellow peasant and with whom macario shared the turkey, grants him great power in gratitude, but this power proves to be macario’s downfall. the structure is not uncommon, but the film itself is written with a strong sense of class consciousness that sympathizes firmly with macario. macario is a generous, loving, responsible father and member of his community, and simultaneously deeply and fervently wants something only for himself—a paradox forced upon him by destitution and exploitation. macario’s life is one of tightly bounded limits thrust upon him by an inscrutable higher power: limits to how much food he can eat, what work he can do, how long he can live; these limits are directly tied to his class as a peasant, and are maintained by the greedy hand of the aristocrats and bourgeoisie and the iron hand of the church. through this class-conscious, anti-bourgeois story, the fairy tale atmosphere is maintained through beautifully done special effects, created both in camera and with gorgeous and clever props, and the flawless acting keeps the laconic script aloft. i deeply enjoyed macario (1960), deservedly one of the classics, and i would highly recommend it

anxiety will have you thinking things like "will everyone hate me if i order coffee at the coffee shop" and "will people think i'm crazy if i work out at the gym"

people act like 20-22 year olds are adults who should be fully responsible and knowledgeable and with it and it’s like have you ever been 20, 21, 22? i knew nothing, i woke up every day dumb as rocks and made every bad choice possible until i went to bed
why couldn't nepotism have chosen me, I would've spent all that money so wisely
