The Bible places the Garden of Eden near the headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates in modern day Iraq. It is not surprising that desert dwelling people would see this wetland as paradise. Cool and inviting. A place where eight different edible wild grasses, grains, grew wild. Including the einhorn wheat which is the ancestor of all wheat grown today. By comparison there were only two such grasses in all of the Americas. No need to plow or till. Just gather nature’s bounty. Oh, and the land. Fertile like no other with the alluvial river mud. There were date palms and waterfowl to net. Fish the size of a child.

 Living was easy in this place where the desert meets the river.

I feel that I lived there long before Islam. Long before Judaism.  Sixty centuries ago I lived in a reed hut with my wife and babies and was happy there. I can smell the scent of the river and taste the dates. I can feel the heron struggling in the net and the eggs gathered from her nest. I was happy there. I was no king, priest, noble or soldier. There were no such in our land. I was just a man living by the river with my wife and babies. Then their husbands, wives and my grandbabies.  I lived until my eyes grew clouded and my hair and beard were gray. I died happy in the circle of my family. Out of ten thousand lifetimes I remember this one most fondly. I wish I could go back. Back to the garden.
