It wasnât supposed to be raining. It was almost summer, for crying out loud. There was also that little detail of Denna refusing to wear and umbrella, but it was a matter of principle. She was too clumsy for an umbrella, and McCree didnât get along with those things. What he did get along with, though, was the rain; because as soon as it started pouring he had almost gotten free of his leash, and it had been a struggle to actually manage to pull him towards the nearest covered place.Â
She didnât even realise who was there with her, until it was too late. Tara and her used to be inseparable, and she still cared for her, obviously. It was just that every time they hanged out or talked on the phone, it felt as if she was expecting a side of her that wasnât there any longer, and that made her feel terrible. So she had stopped texting, and calling, and of course that had only caused her guilt to intensify. âOh- hey, how are you?â, she said, a little nervously, giving McCree a few scratches behind his ears because she didnât know what else to do with her hands.Â
This was awkward â not just for her, she could tell that Denna felt it too: theyâd been best friends for long enough that Tara was able to tell â but she tried not to let it get to her. The more she felt the awkwardness, the more she let it affect her, the more it would seep in and take root inside of her and then sheâd never be able to get rid of it. One day, she would find out what had happened between her and Denna, and she would find a way to fix it, but until then, all she could do was try her best not to let the situation go downhill even more.
She loved Denna, and being her friend, and while maybe a part of her knew they could never be as close as they had once been, she thought they could still be good friends if they could make their way through this rough patch. Tara had hope, and she wasnât going to let go of it that easily. âI was having a pretty good day until this happened,â she joked, gesturing out at the rainfall that had seemed to take them both by surprise. Light and friendly, that was it. There was no reason to turn this into a confrontation of some kind and push her old friend even further away from her.
