Lindsay Butterfield a devoted gardener and the co-author of Floral Forms in Historic Design (1922) created patterns that were informed by his botanical knowledge. Normally focusing on just one type of flower, he was skilled at transposing them into stylized images and arranging them in dynamic and stimulating ways. He often gave greater prominence to stems and leaves than petals and flower heads, and to pattern constructions based on flowing lines rather than mass.
