ok guys i need you to imagine this with me for a second:

eddie and chris are back from texas. it’s been a few weeks since their return. they’re living in their house with buck. buck has dealt with and accepted with the fact that he’s in love with and living with his straight (lol) best friend. the only person who he’s explicitly told is maddie. but apart from that, he’s taking this to his grave.

buddie are about to go for their usual grocery run together. they’re heading towards the car. buck sees that maddie’s calling him, so he falls behind and waves eddie to go ahead.

buck and maddie have their usual slightly insane buckley sibling small talk, whilst eddie starts up the car. but maddie, being the older sister that she is, needs to ask that question. “are you going to tell eddie that you’re in love with him?”

no response. “hello buck? you there?”

meanwhile buck got cut off from maddie before she even asked the question. he looks down at his phone frowning. but he sees the that it reads connected to [car]’s bluetooth.

he looks up and sees eddie staring at him from the car like: 👁️👄👁️

I am mere centimeters away from writing a full on essay about how the “goblins are inherently antisemitic” myth spawned by this website propagates misinformation, displays a huge misunderstanding of what folklore is and does, and contributes to an environment that distracts people from how antisemitism actually operates and the ways in which it’s dangerously on the rise in our current climate–something which, surprise surprise, has almost nothing to do with little green fairy men

There are antisemitic iterations of the goblin! There are also antisemitic iterations of basically everything in European folklore, because if there was one thing people in Europe loved it was hating Jews! But those aren’t definitive and the problem there didn’t originate with the invention of the goblin–which was an evolution of other existing fairy myths, overlaps with them, and isn’t nearly as distinct, differentiated, or universally codified as people seem to think. It originated with people hating Jews, and using pre-existing stories and myths to express that hatred. Most of the time, though, they just wrote about Jews, because they didn’t need a secret magical creature code to be terrible to us. They could just do that! The way that people on this website are obsessed with a single, “original” version of a story, which can then be deemed morally acceptable or unacceptable, goes fundamentally against the way folklore is created, propagated, modified, and used to fit different locations at different times. There isn’t a single “problematic” goblin canon you can point to! They aren’t defined that simply! And no, A Certain Popular Fantasy Series doesn’t count! By focusing on the goblin as the problematic thing, and not the stories about Jews that the antisemitic goblin myths–which are rarer than people seem to think–draw off of, the Discourse™ focuses on a single pass/fail signifier of wokeness instead of actually educating people on the complex narratives that have built different iterations of antisemitism over the centuries. It is also, and I cannot stress this enough, not how folklore works. Learn about blood libel, learn about the myth of the Protocols, learn about how antisemitism uses Jews as the powerful other to justify other forms of prejudice and oppression, and don’t write stories about money-obsessed people with hooked noses. Goblins themselves don’t factor into that as anything other than a footnote.

oh speaking of funny parker side quests. the juror episode. i was so relieved that it didn't go from "parker doesn't understand teamwork so we're sending her to government assigned team building" to "parker doesn't listen to us so we ignore her when she's trying to get our attention". they go from not believing her about the conspiracy to "welp turns out there is a crazy conspiracy behind every mundane interaction" in the space of two scenes. parker asked them for help and they came through for her, for a client who ends the episode with no idea who helped her. idk how to put this really but sometimes with headstrong lone-wolf type characters, the way their trauma-related tendency to go off on their own is treated often leaves a bad taste in my mouth, like it goes too far to "teach them a lesson" about not trusting people when they have very valid reasons for it, but this felt good. parker does kind of learn a lesson, about connecting with other people, but she also learned that she can rely on her team specifically because they proved it to her, not because the plot punished her in some way. you know? anyway i love her so much

One thing about Eliot is he's gonna go so in on a grift. A wedding caterer? Get the fuck outta his way he's got two hundred guests to cook for and these canapes aren't gonna plate themselves. A baseball player? Fuck the con he gets a damn sandwich named after him. A supermarket worker? He's doing his full day of work AND THEN starting a union uprising first chance he gets. Sophie is "the grifter" but Eliot is the one who can match and beat her freak for commiting to a character so hard it becomes your new personality for the next week

leverage is so fucking funny. man manages to find the most mentally ill and neurodivergent group of thieves on the market + an even more mentally ill guy whose literal job description was trying to chase all of them, and forces them into a found family speed-run by trying to blow them all up. they lowkey stage a full fucking country wide coup and are like eh 🤷 just another wednesday. this might be a fun place to vacation tho i guess. sophie shows up to her own funeral twice. they're so good at convincing people of their shit that they make a guy's body start reacting to an illness he doesn't have because it isn't real. go completely out on a limb and basically hand this one guy a new password for his computer so they can get into it and he goes with it. parker and hardison have straight up just "fake it 'till you make it"d into the fbi without even attempting to cover their tracks beyond just These Two Guys. half their clients never asked to be their clients and don't know they're their clients, and the other half are random people who find them who fuckin knows how, meanwhile no government agency can track them down without selling their soul to sterling. they make a point to have a dramatic scene w a Big Bad Shadowy Government Guy who doesn't actually get caught or brought to justice or anything telling them he's going to hunt them all down, and in any other show this would probably earn at least a minor arc later on but he literally never shows up again. an entire season finale hinged on a cake and a bunch of clams. they accidentally made eliot a celebrity not once, not twice, but three times. parker blew up her foster parents' house when she was like. nine. and it's hardly a footnote. hardison is just casually an artistic prodigy but it's only ever brought up for the most background of background gags. eliot's biggest beef with parker and hardison for like two and a half seasons is that they won't stop making weird food with lasers and refuse to realize they can't make a decent beer to save their lives. sophie's immediate response to being shot is to call her shooter a wanker. there's a character who has literally killed a man with a mop and they had the audacity to only put her in one episode.

As a disabled person who's loved LEVERAGE and LEVERAGE REDEMPTION since the beginning - for the characters but also the whole ethos of performing acts that help people against crap systems, it's wonderful to be reminded that it springs from reality.

"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.

It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).

Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.

One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.

Your library would not offer it if they could not afford it, and we afford things by reporting the number of people who use that service, so if you don't use the service we can't afford it. I made a post yesterday calculating (with sources) that the Chicago Public Library costs tax payers $0.27 - $0.44 a day.

The difference being how many tax payers are within the population — calculating to 1 out of every 3 or 5 residents.

To keep math simple, I hashed way down onto the ratio (it is my firm estimation that more than 1 out of every 3 people in Chicago pay taxes)

I didn’t include tourists. Or businesses. So it is reasonable to say that my number of $0.27/day is — if anything — very high.

I did this on purpose to point out “libraries are an incredible, possibly the most incredible, life-value per tax penny.”

Chicago is the third largest city in the country so I appreciate it’s not a one-to-one for other places and I also want to stress that when you break down the costs for something as incredible and valuable as a library, to every resident, it’s going to be pocket change pretty much anywhere

Ultimately, when someone says “this is too expensive” a great way to tell if they are full of bribe gas or not is to calculate how much it costs per day per person paying for it.

$ Budget / Number of tax payers* / 365 = $ Cost per person per day

( * if you don’t know, take a recent census and divide by 3. It’s a super low number compared to actual tax payers but it’s a number accurate enough for a quick estimate)

Yes. Quite easily so. You see, making deals with the Fae is down to very specific word choices. They shot themselves in the foot with their own words here while making this deal, even though they thought their word choice was so very, very clever. The Fae specifically uses the word “glass”. This, in turn, limits the person that agrees to the deal to the “hit your front teeth on the first try every time” to only be hitting their teeth on the first try every time if they drink out of a glass. If the person decides to drink out of a container that isn’t made out of glass, like, say for example… A paper cup. Or a soda can. A plastic bottle. Styrofoam cup. Yeti Tumbler. Their own hand. A bowl. Who knows, a person can get hella creative when they realize there are ways to get around the rules without actually breaking them. So. A Fae being stands before me, and offers me this deal.
