you’re phillip buckley. you and your wife are considering splitting up. you receive two emails over the course of some weeks. your son invites you to the funeral of the man who raised him in your stead. it’d be a four hour drive maybe. you choose not to go. you drink some wine. then your daughter sends you an email announcing the birth of her second child who is named after the same man that raised your son. the same dead man. you know that no child will ever be named after you. you know that it’s what you deserve.
you’re phillip buckley and you witness your son receive the greatest gift he could ever ask for (his captain believed in him a year ago) and there’s an expression on his face you’ve never seen. you once thought you knew what he looked like happy; bruised and rough around the edges with an ice cream cone in his hand. now you see that it was never joy, it was transaction. you’ll never see that face on him. you’ll never elicit that look after you’re gone.
i have this deadly sickness called remembering
don't even remember posting this
“what time do you get off?” well that’s not really any of your business now is it
man I think about how Bobby's last message to Buck was that he loves Buck and he's going to be okay, and Buck's first scene with Maddie after Bobby's death is them discussing Chim but then Maddie telling him she loves him and asking if he's doing okay.
“I can’t come back to work?”

make me write!
"I left him alone," Maddie goes on, although something in her tone feels pointed inwards rather than at Shannon specifically. "For too long, I think. And now he's just— gotten so used to doing it alone."
"Maybe," Shannon says, forcefully dragging her eyes away from Eddie's hand, landing definitively on Buck's shoulder as he starts to finally speak in response to all that fucking listening. "Or maybe healing is just hard and— and being taken care of can eventually start to feel suffocating when you didn't used to need it."
Maddie softens, but it doesn't come across as pity thankfully. Shannon actually bristles in expectation that it will, but Maddie lets out this breath and it just— doesn't. It feels like a woman caught in a difficult situation, one which Shannon has heard all about but which she isn't sure Maddie would want her to have quite so many details on. It feels like understanding from the opposite side of her own situation and it's easier to feel that with a practical stranger than with her own husband. Her ex-husband. Her Eddie.
"You know, it's a new thing for me, but…" Maddie pulls a face like she's actively questioning whether or not she's overstepping with Shannon in this moment, but Shannon meets her gaze head-on and waits her out because in the time it takes to exhale it's like looking in a fun house mirror, "but I think everyone needs it. Being taken care of. It's just easier to convince ourselves we don't when it feels so far out of reach."
