it's me

before the world twisted me into this strange shape, I was a little girl

and when I was a little girl I wanted a flower garden and many cats

to have psychic powers, live on the farm, be fabulous, make art, Sing, preserve the old ways

to be kind to children and animals, to know the names of plants and trees, to make things by hand, to be strong and safe. So, I say, "look, sweet child, you have everything you wanted. just look and see."

I take off my muddy overalls, sink into hot water and epsom salt

I exfoliate and put on my satin kimono, I take a nap with my animals. I am at peace, I am safe, I am strong. This is real life, barefoot in the garden, smelling dirt, carrying water, touching magic, learning where the spiders live, yanking up thistles. There are people who have never seen a firefly.

I am safe and I am strong, I say, holding agony and peace together in the same hand.

I turned 44 this week. Here's some stuff I WON'T do this decade:

-inject a bunch of bullshit into my face

-become a nonsexual being

-stop behaving like a hot girl

-let patriarchy / capitalism steal my power and my $ by convincing me aging is something to buy my way out of (instead of a divine rite of passage)

-make myself small in any way

-waste my time on nonsense

-compromise my true self

-share a bedroom

-hide my body out of shame

-pretend I'm fine when I'm not

-be gaslit

-let men speak over me

-stop getting tattoos

-stop rockin and rollin

-endlessly give until I'm a shell of myself

-forget who the fuck I am

-chase anyone the fuck around trying to get them to treat me right. They can act right or leave.

-skip dessert

-skip the cheese course

-stay when I want to leave

-become more conservative

-stop learning, stop reading

-become cynical

-deprioritize myself
