Basically the thought behind the family was....how do I make it as messy as possible. Some may even note that Kano’s mom isn’t even in the portrait. Unlike my other stories this one takes place almost completely in the same setting and so most of the drama comes from the crazy people surrounding Adelaide and Kano, namely Kano’s family and the nobles all trying to force their choice of heir to take over the throne.
I really wanted to give the feeling of the family portrait while still allowing the characters to stay true to themselves ie. Kano being anxious, Nao not caring at all, Haru being way too excited etc. The frame was a later edition that I’m so glad I added because holy cow was it fun to draw. I couldn’t fit the speed paint for it into the post but I’ll probably add it to my story~ I also wanted some subtle hinting at the family dynamic through the positioning and colouring of the characters, for instance Irina and her children are the only ones able to cast a shadow on someone else, since they have the most influence over the nobles and thus the future of their family. On the other hand, despite her being taller than both Haru and Ren, Nao is physically the furthest from Enkai as she has the least claim to his throne. Finally, although this was more of a design choice I made earlier on rather than in specifically this drawing, since I’ve drawn all the characters together it’s a lot more obvious but Mei’s colour palette paints her as the “outsider” between the family.
Just a lil bit of a note on this, it depicts the characters at a much younger age then how they would appear in the story. I did this to be able to include some of the family members that aren’t actually around anymore.
