Growing up as redhead gave me a weird fascination with redhair and the biological differences it causes. It's intriguing, really! So here's a info dump about it incorporating fun things to apply to redheaded genshin characters in your headcanons or when writing redheaded characters!

Firstly! What causes Redhair? Pheomelanin. Redheads produce more pheomelanin cause of genetic variants in the MC1R gene.

I think it's summed up pretty well here in this article!

Redheads produce more pheomelanin due to genetic changes (called variants) in the MC1R gene found on chromosome 16. This gene provides the code for a protein called melanocortin 1 receptor that is located on melanocytes and is responsible for the type of melanin produced. When the receptor is activated or turned on, melanocytes produce eumelanin. In contrast, if the receptor is not activated the melanocytes produce pheomelanin. Variations in the MC1R gene are responsible for this deactivation [3].

Razor language: genetic variants in the MC1R gene can deactivate the receptor that tells the body to produce eumelanin, causing the body to default to pheomelanin.

You may be wondering though, what is pheomelanin? Basically put it's red/orange pigment. Eumelanin is black/brown. Pretty much everyone has both, but redheads produce predominantly pheomelanin.

Cause our bodies produce predominantly red/orange pigment redheads cannot have a cool undertone, even if they are pale. Ironically, Childe's outfit is very cool toned. In my experience I often look sickly whenever I wear colors like Childe (minus some reds/burgundys) lol. I kinda like how I look in some greys though, even if it makes me look like i'm dying of tuberculosis.

On the topic of hues, Diluc actually wears warm tones in his main outfit! Don't let the black fool you it's got brown undertones, same his white having cream ones and his golden accents.

And on the topic of Diluc... he's kinda a interesting case to me. A lot people hc with classic ginger traits, but Diluc isn't really a classic ginger. We can rule that out based off the hue of his hair and the fact his family doesn't have recessive inheritance.

MC1R is a recessive gene. This means that two copies (one inherited from each parent) are required for the trait to be observed. In this case, two copies of the variant are required for the child to be a redhead.

We can rule out his family having recessive inheritance cause all Ragnvindrs seem to inherit redhair from only the Ragnvindr side. Ironically, it seems to be a VERY dominant gene. Sometimes I headcanon his family either has a blessing/curse, are descendants of muratans or smth or it's just a fantasy MC1R variant similar to the classic ginger one, but causing a stronger more vibrant hue and dominant inheritance.

Nilou would fall into a similar category, but we don't know her family background so she could just have more vibrant hair or be a muratan descendant. Mauvika was born with two toned hair, so I'm not really counting her she's also probably a muratan descendant. Chasca and Escoffier are also both still redheads but they fall into the Auburn and Strawberry blonde category.

Strawberry blondes and Auburn redheads are both real shades, it's just caused by different levels in pheomelanin and eumelanin presentations within the MC1R mutation. Strawberry blonde has low levels of light eumelanin, less than your typical ginger meanwhile Auburn has more eumelanin compared to the typical ginger.

OKAY. This is getting long so I'm just gonna rapid fire fun facts now.

1: Redheads absorb vitamin D better than others which means Diluc likely isn't deficient in vitamin D despite his nocturnal activities.

2: Redheads are more likely to have freckles because of the gene mutation producing high amounts of pheomelanin (red/orange melanin).

3: If you're a fan of Dottore and Childe/Diluc senerios redheads have a higher resistance to anesthetics and sedatives and often require more to be used. We are also more prone to waking up in surgeries and experiencing anesthesia awareness.

4: Some sources suggest redheads may age slower than others. Some say due to a mutation in the MC1R gene or it's just cause of how we have to protect our skin from the sun.

5: Redheads have a higher tolerance for pain but are actually more sensitive things like temperature changes.

6: Redhair doesn't go grey it either turns white, Silver or just becomes a paler shade. In Diluc's case his pigment is so strong it would probably hardly change color at all for Childe he may go kinda peachy or strawberry blonde.

8: Baby gingers often have lighter shades of redhair so Childe was likely born strawberry blonde, Escoffier near blonde, Chasca a more dark orange ginger. (My brother was that way and he has near her shade.).

9: There was superstition in the past about redheads coming back from the grave as vampires or that they were witches.

10: Despite being orange redhair is called red cause the word orange didn't enter the english language until the 16th century.

11: Redhair despite it's beauty it also comes with some health risks. It's known for an increased with in Skin Cancer, Parkinson's disease and Endometriosis. As well as thing's like easier burning and more severe burns. There are also the changes in how we feel pain and temperature making us more prone to suffering in the heat/cold and more resistant to certain types of pain such as electrocution.
