When Things Don’t Go As Planned ...
One of the things that make us human is our ability to form expectations. It is our ability to believe that something will happen in the future, whether we think of it as positive or negative depends on us. A lot of times, we like to make positive expectations, like passing an exam when we didn’t study the night before. Sometimes, it’s the opposite, like expecting yourself to mess up when you are speaking in front of class. Expectations are like our visions of the future, but it is not surprising when our expectations sometimes don’t match with reality. It’s disappointing when we expected something good to happen or something to go so well, but it didn’t.
This happens to all of us, more so to the best of us. The disappointment that comes with failed expectations hurts a lot. Some people describe it as being “stabbed in the chest” or getting “punched in the gut”. After that, they often lose the will to expect good things. It becomes so unbearable at times that it leads to depression, even worse, suicide. There are a lot of advice in the internet and in books on how to get over the disappointment but today I wanted to share something different.
God knows exactly how it feels to be disappointed. In fact, He feels this a lot more than us, especially with His people failing Him a lot. That is why He reminds us that as long as we live in this world, things might not always go our way. But He promises that even if events don’t go as planned, He still holds the future.
Jeremiah 29:11 states: For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
God always had a plan for us even before we were born. He already knew what we could become, better than whatever we are now. As humans, our plans are often not the same as God’s because we only see the past and the present and whatever is within our range, but God is different. He sees everything. He sees the past, present and future, the whole vastness of the universe and even every single heart. His plans are better than ours.
That is why, we should not be surprised of failed expectations. We should not be shocked if things don’t go our way. It happens. Instead of feeling down or disappointed, we should remind ourselves that God holds everything in place. He sees what is happening to us and He knows that it will happen, yet He has a plan, a great plan for every single one of us. Today, things might be looking bad, but someday, with God in our side, we can rest assure that everything will work out, just according to His plan.
