doodling to try and figure out how i wanna draw adrian
thinking about a very specific scenario of a grace with no video logs, with no xenonite failure, who comes back to earth as rocky comes back to erid, heart full but missing a very distinct piece. ten, twenty years go by, and grace is not malnourished nor does he look even half his age, but there's a deepset something in his eyes that has nothing to do with stratt's actions being revealed or the press or adjusting to earth again. about earth getting news of a ship coming down, whose atmosphere is fundamentally different now and causes trouble for that ship. damages sustained on that ship. a red light in the sky. suspected eridian contact as confirmed by dr ryland grace. thank you tom, anna temple here and we're live at nasa's makeshift landing pad, ready to receive, watching- oh, my- a row of officials that cannot pin down ryland grace this time as he, live on air, tears apart every country's anxiety of eridians by ripping from the crowd and jumping the fence into the launching area. a camera pan that judders from dr grace sprinting, the most energetic he's been in years, to a brown eridian kareening towards him in a xenonite suit. prepared to catch ryland's tackle and embrace him properly, there on the green grass, for the very first time. first contact.
What if Stratt was the one who started the rumors that her and Grace were together/sleeping together because everyone kept flirting with Grace and his aroace ass was oblivious and she really just wanted everyone to focus on their work?
I love how unaware Grace is about how impressed the rest of the staff are with his work and his high clearance and the fact he’s always standing next to Stratt (which just elevates his authority and reputation even more) but he’s so oblivious to all of that because imposter syndrome goes crazy and he catches people off guard because he’s incredibly silly and talks too much and is so curious about everything and he talks to himself a lot and when he’s explaining anything he gets so excited he sounds like he’s teaching his middle school class again and he just doesn’t see himself the way others are seeing him at all and oh my god I love him so much
I sort of headcanon that a lot of Grace's "Im just a Guy" temperament comes from the whole situation where the Big Name scientists he insulted in his paper personally and maliciously used their connections to get him kicked off his internship(was it internship? Partnership?), out of his university/lab, and basically got him barred from all opportunities in his field. That's expressly laid out in the book. Like, yeah.... he learned a very hard lesson on where he fit in the category of 'Important People Who Have Power and Authority' and the one time Grace thought he was one of them, or at least secure enough to challenge them, he ended up imploding his life. He landed in Middle School Education and it turns out he Loved it, but I imagine that was a very painful and somewhat awfully public fall from academia.
Mr first officer
I do love the wacky wardrobe and absolutely unhinged way Ryland wears glasses in the movie combined with book knowledge that for several years every Most Important Meeting on Earth was led by Eva Stratt and right behind her was.... this guy. Who never quite grasped the fact that he was the first officer of the Petrova Taskforce. He just follows Eva into meeting after meeting all over the world and he's like wow! Gee! I have no idea why im here. Go Eva! She takes one opinion in that room seriously and that opinion is Rylands. And literally everyone in the world just has to... go with it. Because Stratt said so.
"Why did Stratt pick a school teacher" — because my guy can frankenstein Venus out of plywood, some duct tape and a dream. "I'm not qualified" — buddy, you have scientific background and the resourcefulness of someone who is used to having zero budget. I love this specific part of the plot that is "let's take the guy who can problem-solve things with zero money and give him unlimited budget and see what happens".
Grace being kind of a pushover due to a combination of conflict avoidance, low self-esteem and the amount of stuff he had to put up with while working for Stratt (eg, “you live on this aircraft carrier now”).
Rocky and Grace being in some kind of meeting with the science thrum on Erid's surface (Grace in his xenonite suit), shortly after they arrive, when Rocky notices that Grace is being even more clingy than usual. Like he's constantly got at least one arm on Rocky's carapace, and has not moved away from Rocky since the meeting started. He's much stiller than he usually is— even accounting for his weakness from the malnutrition— and his light sensing organs keep rolling around in their sockets, meaning that he's anxiously scanning the room.
Rocky begins to worry. Is Grace getting sicker? Is the higher gravity having a worse impact than they thought? Or is he just nervous to be around strange Eridians? (Though he hasn't had this reaction to anyone else? Is there something up with the science Thrum??)
Rocky is like spiralling into anxiety until they have to move to a different part of the room for some reason and Grace, slowed down by the suit, briefly loses his hold on Rocky.
Immediately, he crashes into a table. And then backs into a wall. And then nearly knocks over some important Eridian science equipment. And then stands in the middle of the room, looking confused and slightly freaked out, both hands stretched out in front of him, opening and closing like he's grasping at the air.
Wait.
“Grace.”
“Yeah Rock?”
“At which point during meeting did light emitting devices in room stop working question?”
“Uh… like two minutes after we got in. Sorry, didn't want to be a bother.”
Never mind. Turns out humans are just idiots.
Grace, explaining how humans evolved: yeah so basically we evolved to be persistance predators where we would just slowly walk towards our prey and track it until it got so tired it couldn't fight back or run away and then we killed it :)
Rocky, who is an Eridian, an AMBUSH predator, who can't see light and so cannot track things the way humans can, and that doesn't have a lot of stamina and literally won't be able to wake up once they fall asleep: grace what the fuck statement--
guess who just got an idea for a human trait that passes over to grace's eridian form in my eridian shifter au
i already knew about the persistence predator vs ambush predator thing and ive seen posts about it before but the wording of this one sparked an idea in my brain
because I have a handful of eridian traits that pass over to grace's human form, but not a lot the other way (aka like. maybe two. the whole surviving earth's atmosphere, obviously, and maybe object permanence/spatial memory). so now im imagining that grace's eridian form in my eridian shifter au retains slight changes to their body that allows them to act as a persistence predator and when everyone realizes this they're lowkey horrified
eridian shifter grace is just the terminator if they were a teacher, scientist, and clumsy
ive been thinking about grace and eridian formalwear.... idk how to design clothes/outfits at all so this is me throwing random stuff at the wall
Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.
Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.
And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.

funi in my head, stupid in execution. Anyway, happy pride.
What if PHM crew survived
yes I like this
I love all the 'rocky cares for grace' h/c but I crave more of the opposite too-
He’s absolutely building pools and taking the ladders away-
To be fair, Rocky also needed some time to correctly interpret Graces needs- (I also did Grace comforting Rocky here)
