I do love a good "Rocky learns about an Earth Thing and is baffled by it and goes off about how silly/nonsensical it is" situation as much as the next guy, but something that's been bugging me about that is the...idk the Spockness of it all. Like it's often juxtaposed with headcanons of Eridian culture/rules/norms etc and how those Make Sense unlike humans and their arbitrary illogical habits. I just think that Erid would be just as varied in terms of culture as Earth is, and the thing about culture is that it very rarely Makes Sense (as much as we may think it does).
Give me Rocky who hears about an Earth Thing, goes "what pfff that's so weird, you humans don't make any sense, unlike us Eridians who do this reasonably" and then proceeds to matter-of-factly describe something as batshit as the thing Grace just told him about but in a completely different direction
Colt and Court always putting Ryland behind them, not because he's fragile or can't defend himself, but because he's completely impulsive and WILL FIGHT anyone who talks shit about his brothers.
Ryland'll put himself of his older brother when their father started to get violent. He'll start yelling and cursing those who bothered Colt.
They put him behind for a safety measure, because Ryland always put them first. He doesn't care what will be the consequences.
"Grace sounds like a young Eridian" this, "Grace is chronologically a pebble" that. ENOUGH. I propose "Grace is a creaky old man to Eridians." His wealth of knowledge beyond theirs gives the impression that he's spent centuries alive to learn it all. His rougher voice (compared to their whalesong) and steady, fluid movements (compared to their habit of either perfect stillness or jittering) are both full on Eridian gandpappy. They're convinced he's basically Bill Nye before he even reveals he wants to teach science.
Give me an Erid that refuses to accept that Grace, a thirty four year old, isn't everybody's sweet old grandpa no matter how much Rocky rages that Grace is technically younger than everyone he's teaching.
Many people in the comments are saying âtraumaâ, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. Itâs called Childhood Amnesia, and itâs a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to âtrickâ your brain into remembering with different tactics.
This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It canât be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.
This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is âstored in the bodyâ, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories wonât generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

Marissa being legitimately heartbroken and everyone seeing her grieving and unless they happen to know both her and Ryland the FIRST thing they ask is almost always âWere the two of you an item?â
And when she says no then it becomes âdid you want to be?â âdid you see him as a brother instead?â
Marissa feeling hurt and frustrated because isnât it enough that they were friends? Is twenty years of late night conversations, inside jokes, tears, laughter, Thursday dinners like clockworkâis that not enough to say she loved him, plain and simple? Is she not allowed to grieve this way, like a piece of her was torn out without anyone even telling her?
But star-crossed love isnât for friends, they say. It just doesnât make a good story.
since this is being posted i believe a month after the last part im gonna say that yes they've been at this for 4 weeks and grace categorically refused to engage with a weird dream riddle and delegated that in favor studying of his new front yard decoration until frustration finally broke him
