Eric Wasn’t Evil

I’m pretty tired of seeing things like “Eric Harris was a sociopath who manipulated his poor depressed friend.” Eric wasn’t even a liar when it came right down to it. During their Diversion intake, he answered the questions honestly. HE ASKED FOR HELP. He took the meds even though 1990s vintage antidepressants often made people feel like they were behind glass in relation to the world. He saw the shrink, he completed the anger management class. Eric tried. In comparison with Dylan, he was practically an open book.

“But he was a racist!” Nope. Not buying that. By the time he got down to writing specifically racist things in his journals or on his website, he’d already committed to NBK and was building his persona as a psycho. Part of that was purposefully trying to be offensive. The early rant about racists are anti-Americans morons who should all be shit seems much more in line with his genuine philosophy. Eric was dedicated to fighting back against a system trying to steal his individuality. It doesn’t make sense that he would turn that upside down and judge people based on race. Basically any racist behaviour shows as either lame teenage boy humour or an attempt to push people away. He and Dylan shared a relatively wide social circle the first years of high school. As it became obvious that none of those so-called friends was willing or able to stand up for them they withdrew into their violent fantasy world. That’s understandable.

And then there’s the rape fantasy thing, which seems completely overblown. His journal said he wanted to trick someone into coming to his room, which could easily mean he wished he could trick a girl into liking him. Knowing full well NBK was days away, he had a date over for a movie night. He had nothing to lose. He could have attacked her. Instead he was a too-perfect gentleman according to his date. He didn’t even make a proper pass at her! Just put his arm around her on the couch and gave her a peck on the cheek when she left.

He was sad. He was angry. He was desperately staring down the barrel of a mediocre life that would have wasted his intellect, which for Eric was the ultimate insult. I personally don’t condone what he did, but I don’t believe he was a monster.

One of the most sadistic killers in history, Anatoly Slivko conducted “experiments” in unconsciousness. He was inspired after he became sexually aroused at the grisly scene of an automobile accident in which a boy perished. Slivko would befriend young boys and then lure them out into the woods, where he would suspend them by their necks via a rope until they passed out. In several cases, Slivko assaulted the boys while they were unconscious, reviving them afterwards and swearing them to secrecy.

In seven cases, however, Anatoly Slivko would dismember, burn, and desecrate the corpses, often for the purpose of sexual gratification, recreating the accident that had initially aroused him. Regardless of whether he killed the boys or not, Slivko always made a video tape of the proceedings. He was executed in 1989.
