We are witnessing the grotesque reality of the martyred Palestinians and thousands of their massacred children being written off as mere afterthoughts. The way western media outlets steadfastly refuse to call the Israeli aggression and onslaught for what it is, which is genocide and ethnic cleansing, is just another way of dehumanizing Palestinians.Ā
Incredibly alarming that talks of āpeaceā in Gaza seem to extend no further than a ceasefire. How do you think theyāre gonna start off where they left off themselves? Their houses are destroyed, so many have lost mothers and fathers and brothers and children, they still have no clean water and no food. Any area Israel withdraws out of is an area it already knows has been rendered inhospitable. There was even a direct quote by some IOF soldier gleefully stating how he āwasnāt sure Palestinians could go back to their homes.ā So what happens when the US āsucceeds at negotiating a ceasefireā? Who will be responsible for helping the Palestinians rebuild all that theyāve lost?
Palestinians are literally being treated as invalids & it hurts so much to see. Itās so heartbreaking watching footage of Palestinians walking the demolished streets of Khan Younis in shock, with some saying (with no emotion, bc theyāve been enduring this for months) that their homes are simply gone. There was nothing to come back to by the time Israeli troops left. These are whole, multidimensional human beings like you and me who no longer have homes they could live in. And there is literally no recourse. Theyāre supposed to just pick up the pieces all alone. Itās so dehumanizing I could cry about it.
So important to reinforce that advocacy for Palestinian rights doesnāt end at a ceasefire that has already come too little, too late. At that point it would be about advocating for Palestiniansā rights for quality of life, Palestiniansā rights to retribution, and most importantly Palestiniansā right to freedom. Although those numbers have certainly intensified since Oct. 7, the Palestinian struggle goes back decades. No one should be hanging up their hats when the US inevitably paints itself as the western savior Palestine has needed all along, finally flying in on a golden chariot to broker peace. This is far from over when a ceasefire is declared, and itāll be far from over until every Palestinian enjoys the safety and comfort of living any human being is entitled to.
Btw Israel let Palestinians celebrate not one (1) holiday in peace. They didnāt grant Christian Palestinians access to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, they actively attacked families who were already starving at Iftar during Ramadan, and now there are several reports of families being killed on Eid al-Fitrāa sacred multi-day holiday practiced by lots of Arabs. It breaks my heart imagining the Palestinian families in Gaza right now, most of whom are spending Eid mourning loved ones who were taken by Israeli strikes. Most of us will never understand the sheer magnitude of that pain.
Iām being completely serious when I say I canāt think of anything more dehumanizing than deliberately terrorizing Palestinians on their sacred holidays. Itās saying their culture is not worthy of being practiced with safety and security, itās saying that they as human beings are not deserving of the luxury of culture and safety, itās saying that they can do this over and over and get away with it because Arabs are invalids to the average person not directly affected by this. It should make you incredibly angry that every holiday so far has been grounds for a heightened volume of war crimes from Israel. Itās making me incredibly angry just typing this. Palestinians deserve better.
