On the 5th (18th) of July 1918—the feast day of St. Sergius of Radonezh—Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna descended into the darkness of a 20-meter-deep mine shaft near Alapaevsk. Alongside her, the Bolsheviks cast alive into the mine shaft Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich; Princes Ioann, Konstantin, and Igor Konstantinovich; Prince Vladimir Paley; and two faithful servants: her cell attendant, Nun Varvara, and Fyodor Remez, secretary of Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich.

As she faced her martyrdom, her final prayer echoed the words of Christ: "Lord, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
