TMN: Welcome to TMN! Tell us more about yourself! :)
I am a rising freshman at the University of Oxford, where I will be reading mathematics from October 2017.
This year I graduated with a perfect IB score from Pearson College UWC, a multi-cultural institution representing 80+ countries which exemplifies experiential learning and alternative education.
It was at Pearson College where I discovered many new passions and activities, such as astronomy and kayaking, whilst actively maintaining my passion for mathematics. Furthermore, I have received numerous awards while competing, including a medal on the European Mathematical Cup and a first prize on the Macedonian mathematics competition.
TMN: What do you think your strengths are as a tutor?
First of all, I believe I can resonate well with high/middle school students who are amidst new concepts, as I myself have only recently covered many of those; therefore, I am aware of the approaches and explanations that best work for students of such age groups. These insights enable me to approach patiently yet confidently, as I understand that sufficient time and proper methodology are both essential for the clarification of a concept. I also admire and practice interactive methods of teaching, which spur participation and critical thinking amongst pupils and instill in them a feeling of empowerment, which inevitably leads to better performance in a given subject.
TMN: Why do you love teaching?
In my opinion, there are two main appeals to teaching. The first is, of course, the satisfaction of passing down knowledge to others, who may utilize and advance it in such unique and individualized ways in accordance with their own ambitions and interests. The second appeal is the consolidation of knowledge on the tutor’s side: by changing perspectives whilst breaking down a concept, one often has unprecedented insights and “aha” moments.
