George Harrison, February 1965; photo by Henry Grossman.
“George looks as I would expect Hamlet to look. Early morning, totally open, something going on in the mind, not trying to put anything on. It’s one of my best portraits.” - Henry Grossman, Brandeis Magazine, 2013
“I call this my ‘Hamlet Portrait.’ Having been an actor, I said to myself, Wow, that look is how I would want the actor playing Hamlet to look: direct, simple, at ease, no put-on, no pretense.” - Henry Grossman, CBS 60 Minutes Overtime, 2013
“We were having breakfast in Nassau. George came in; he was still in his pajamas, had just awakened. I wasn’t taking pictures at breakfast, or not intending to, and he looked so totally undefended, and different from any time I’d seen him that I said, ‘George, I gotta take a picture.’” - Henry Grossman, CBS This Morning, March 23, 2013 (x)
“[Derek Taylor] taught me to just be myself… which I always tried to be.” - George Harrison; interview conducted by Larry Kane in the mid-60s, quoted in When They Were Boys (2013)
“Just remember, he [George] has enormous intellectual curiosity; he wants to know everything. […] George may be the youngest Beatle and all that, but he is beyond his years in his values, and in his pursuit of the truth, and I might add quite candidly, his ability to [be] direct and sometimes painfully honest.” Derek Taylor; interview conducted by Larry Kane, quoted in When They Were Boys (2013) (x)
“He wants to know everything…” reminds me of the 1964 train trip from NYC to DC, when Paul was explaining something about a camera to him. This is the greatest portrait of George. He’s just beautiful, open and there.
Dunno whats up with the whole anon situation but I reccomend you go back on that post and delete it? Im not on the beatles fandom, I only reblog posts casually sometimes, but I've interacted with Hux and, due to very personal history- I'm real good at clocking abusers and manipulators. The whole history with them really just ammounted to people who didnt like that Hux doesnt like John Lennon much (because the man IRL did abuse people, cmon guys) and a group of chronically online folk started harassing them for that, and people who didn't want "drama" blocked Hux just in case, depriving them of community and status for no good reason. I'm in this supposedly culty discord server, barely around, cuz, well, not my fandom; but I joined and ocassionally chatted with the members on voicecall while we played houseflipper and listener to beatles music. Im not online much and they acted like polite, normal people, there was no bashing of anyone, just goofing off- Although of course, this being a private setting, Hux did sometimes express frustration with what happened to them, because it was very unfair. This was always done with receipts- And we encouraged eachother not to interact with the people that harmed Hux despite how much it sucked, because we know it would only add fuel to the fire. I was tempted to go to these people and try to reason with them, but realized it'd be a waste of time. No one was ever encouraged to bully anyone. I checked this server casually from time to time, and they were just sharing fanfics they liked, beatles smut they enjoyed, etc. It was just normal fandom shit after the dust settled with Hux's harassers. But I guess there's still people with nothing better to do. This is why I'm not in fandom. You get people that are just trying to carve little third spaces for themselves, but there's always people with too much free time online, and someone with a vendetta is unstoppable. I don't know Hux too deeply but I've seen enough to trust my judgement, It's colored by judgement and not feelings of hate or justice or whatever. I just wish they would be left alone, please and thank you. I don't mean this to be a passive agressive message, by the way. I just want everyone to be more civil with eachother but that starts by saying that Hux should have never been made out to be a shitty person at all. Thanks
Hi hello, first of all, umm no? I will not “go back on that post and delete it.” Lmao. As I said clearly in that post in multiple places, my only point in posting it was to encourage people to free themselves from any situation in fandom where they are feeling scared or controlled. Which is precisely how anon described their experience in that discord. As I stated in that post, I do not have any way of independently corroborating any facts. I am not in that discord server. I have no interest in ever being in that discord server. If you are there and having a great time—which it sounds like you are—by all means, please continue doing so! The post was not directed at you!
In return, just as I cannot tell you that you’re not having fun in that discord server, I’m sorry to say that you cannot invalidate my own personal experiences, or anon’s, either. Because you were not there, you are not me, and you know absolutely nothing about me or what went on. Indeed, the reason I decided to post that ask on my own personal blog is because the situation anon described and their feelings around it resonated with me precisely because of my own past experiences with Hux. And with all due respect to your super special abilities of “clocking abusers and manipulators,” your apparently magical abilities to judge a person’s vibes (even when you claim not to be close to them) do not trump my real lived experiences. Or anon’s for that matter. That is simply not how that works.
And finally, I would urge you to consider why you felt the need to send this very long, rambling, and mostly irrelevant ask trying to defend a person I barely mentioned in my post. To reiterate, my post was about the idea that people should not feel intimidated, controlled, and scared in fandom spaces. Do you take issue with that idea? If so, what about that idea do you find so uncomfortable that you need me to delete my post?
I love your fics and I want to interact with you... but I can't.
I don't think you should publish this ask. I'm just telling you this because I feel like you should know.
Thehuxler has a Discord server and they tell the members who they can and can't like. You are one of those people.
I want to interact with your blog and kudos your fics but I'm scared because the people on the server will exclude me too... and then I'll have no one.
Poisedwalrus is on the server too. They don't talk too much and they are very respected. I've seen them interact with you and not get punished for it. However, if I interacted with you the members would not turn a blind eye.
I'd message you but if that message gets out then I'd be all alone.
I know that others on the server must feel the same. We're all just too scared of the consequences.
Hi anon, I’ve been sitting on this for several days debating whether to post it or not. Debating because, as those that know me (and probably those that do not even know me very well) know, I usually do not answer these types of asks. And I have zero interest in getting personally or even tangentially involved in any fandom drama ever. I have no interest in fighting anyone (too old and tired). I will just simply leave fandom once it becomes so toxic that it no longer brings me joy. And I think umm my (almost non-existent) interactions with beatles fandom over the past few months are sort of a testament to how I’ve been feeling about it all? Finding it hard to be here at all in any capacity at the moment.
However, I thought it was ultimately really important to answer this because even setting aside the facts of what you are alleging (which I have no independent way of corroborating to be clear but find very disturbing on their face), if any part of your fandom experience is making you feel SCARED. To the extent that you have to think twice about who you CAN interact with and who you CANNOT interact with, and what fics you are allowed to read? It’s honestly gotten too deep and you need to get yourself out of that situation. I understand that this is easier said than done. I have been there. Without getting into too many details, I will just say I’ve had personal experiences with Hux in the past that made me feel similarly. Which is why this ask sounded credible to me and I am answering it. What you’re describing sounds very controlling, scary, and unpleasant. And it makes me incredibly sad to hear about and to think that potentially lots of other people could be going through the same thing along with you.
I will reiterate, this is beatles fandom! We come to this place for slut paul mccartney! We come to this place for magic! We do not come here to be subjected to weirdo cult behavior. It is never ever that deep. Much love to you anon. Please free yourself 💗💗
