It's a misconception that the mimics are hunting humans when they trail along at the back of hiking groups.

In fact, the creature you'll find suddenly walking beside you and acting as if they've always been there is almost certainly a juvenile, as the adults lose the ability when they reach reproductive age.

Recent studies suggest the forest mimic is less like a preying mantis (mimicry as a hunting strategy) and more like a cuckoo (mimicry as a protective strategy for their young). Adult forest mimics will leave their offspring near a group of hikers while they forage during the day, and retrieve them near trailheads in the evening. Groups of hikers provide safety from predators and allow the parents of the species the freedom to forage more widely.

For this reason, the traditional advice to never let a mimic into your vehicle is still very important, as this would separate the young mimic from its mother. If a juvenile forest mimic does follow your group to the parking lot, you can keep it entertained with trail snacks, dad jokes, and simple goofs. The mother will usually collect them shortly before sunset.

When you notice the woods around the trailhead go silent and feel a sense of nameless foreboding, find an excuse to avert your attention from the juvenile so it can sneak back into the forest to rejoin its mother, convinced it's fooled another party of unsuspecting humans.

Surprisingly, Shirley. There's nothing bigger Shirley needs to be protected from (Milly's schemes being one of the most significant things), so Lelouch at least can't really show how protective he is, but Shirley? God, that girl was ready to join a fucking terrorist organisation to help Lelouch, reunite him with Nunnally and protect him, which ended up costing her her own life. Sure, Lelouch did erase Shirley's memories for her well-being, but like, still. She would also try to save him from Milly as often as she could and defend him (unless we're talking about his gambling habits) from whatever she could. It's Shirley, ok.

Shirlulu role reversal ? Very interesting.

It is a very elaborate premise, I assure you, and there would be as much of Shirley’s friendships with Suzaku, Kallen, and CC as of her friendship and romance with Lelouch (although the Kallen friendship would be complicated by Kallen discovering that Shirley is Zero, and I honestly would really love to see that explored).  It’s an AU I like to consider every now and then, because at a point it deviates wildly from where canon goes, but I would never, ever write it because it’d be so much planning and writing, like that is easily a 100k to 200k fic with a lot of battles (a thing I don’t know how to write) and written for a series I haven’t watched since like 2007/2008.  But it’s definitely the Code Geass fic that I wish I could just manifest the most because I would love to read it.

Final Ramble: I've been craving some Shirlulu slow burn fics that are multichapter (with a happy ending) or without the slowburn (like they literally dated and she admitted she loved Lulu in canon so that's fine too) but still multichaptered, happy ending. Got any recs? I just want something that focuses on their romance that isn't a freaking oneshot! I'll take both angst and lighthearted, preferably angst. No sad ending tho or ill kms😭 I feel too hopeless when I look at your posts about them.

Anon, I feel you so much! 😭 I don't think I've ever found one in all of my years in the LuluShir fandom, all I have are oneshots too. We got the short end of the stick in canon (tragic, downplayed romance) and in fanon since the other ships got all the traction.

My 2012-self started what would've been a huge multichaptered R2 fix-it AU involving:

Shirley miraculously surviving (Lelouch was so distraught that he didn't notice her heart hadn't stopped, Suzaku finds her after he leaves and rushes her to the hospital desperately hoping she won't be Euphie all over again).

Suzaku figuring out that Shirley must have regained her memories and not knowing whether Lelouch was the one who shot her or not, so he sets up Anti-Geass guards at Shirley's room door. Lelouch knowing Rollo did it and he could come back to finish the job if he were to find out Shirley survived, so Suzaku's actions work to his advantage and he Geasses the guards into reporting to him.

Milly calling Lelouch who can barely bring himself to listen to her voicemail, expecting her to tell him about Shirley's funeral, only to find out Shirley actually survived.

Emotional LuluShir reunion where Lelouch sneaks in into her room at night, thinking she'd be asleep, just needing to actually see her alive, but of course Shirley wakes up. Lelouch feels guilty for being there at all, knowing that he is the reason Shirley's always in danger, and Shirley tries to make him understand that he needs to let her choose for herself this time. Lelouch refuses to take the risk of losing her again though, so he doesn't take her with him. He soothes her by telling her the best help she can give him is staying safe. So, Shirley makes him promise that he'll stay safe, too.

Suzaku deciding to take Shirley with him and Nunnally to keep her safe from Geass users. However, he is warned that the Emperor would see Shirley as a nuisance if he were to know that she has her memories back, so Shirley and Nunnally have to pretend not to know each other.

Eventually the Emperor finds out and before they can get rid of Shirley, Suzaku decides to ship her off to the Black Knights, by then trusting that Lelouch would do what it takes to keep her safe.

I had it all planned-out all the way to the end, and the focus would stay on Shirley/Lelouch/Suzaku and to a lesser extent, Nunnally and CC all the way through. The ending would involve a time-skip where Zero went MIA after defeating the emperor and Shirley became the swimming teacher at their school, and they would reunite at the last scene.

But I got 14k words in and dropped it, I can't remember why 😭 I definitely wish I had written it though! I'm not sure the writing would've been of very good quality but at least it would've been there 😔

The biggest LuluShir tragedy is that both Shirley and Lelouch only notice they have feelings for each other when they think they've lost the other.

Shirley only seems to accept her feelings after she mistakenly thinks Lelouch might be dating Kallen:

And Lelouch only notices after he accidentally gets her father killed and realizes he needs to give up on her if he wants her to be safe:

It's no wonder that finally acting on his feelings for Shirley is at the very forefront of Lelouch's ideal world, as shown in the special story published in Newtype 2008:

I suddenly remembered something I had kept in my breast pocket. That's right, these must have found their way to me precisely for this very moment. "Hey, Shirley..." "Hm? What is it?” "What do you think of classical music?" "Huh? Well, not much, really. I've never been particularly interested in it." "I just happened to have some tickets for a concert, if you'd like to come." "Huh?! You mean, you want to go with m—me?" "Yes, I want to go with you."

The fact that in Lelouch's vision — the world that CC herself confirms is Lelouch's dream and the way he desperately wanted his world to look like — he does a role-reversal so he can be the one to ask Shirley out to that classical concert is both, really sweet and really sad.

If only Lelouch had realized how happy he was at Ashford before, that classical concert could have been the start of his relationship with Shirley. But that's not what fate had in store for them, and Lelouch regretted it so badly that he wanted to do it all over again.
