So, I have a theory. It’s probably been discussed before. In the comics, it is revealed that Michonne has a daughter and when they arrive at the Commonwealth, she sees a picture of herself that her daughter has posted. I know Michonne in the television adaptation is looking for Rick with CRM, but I’m getting Beth vibes with the comic story. I think it’s possible she could end up with one/both of the groups. Also, interesting is that when Michonne talks to Elodie, her daughter, Elodie tells her that she and her sister had gotten mixed up with a “bad group” who made them perform sexual favors for protection which ultimately got her sister killed and forced Elodie to kill them all. This reminds me of the Beth storyline. None of TF were aware (that we know of) of what was going on at Grady. Unless Noah told them and we didn’t see that on screen. Thoughts?

Yeah for sure. I really haven’t discussed this overly much, but several of my fellow theorists have, and for the same reasons. It feels like it COULD be something they remix for Beth.

My only caution is that we’ve said that before with other story lines, and it hasn’t turned out to be true. For example, many people thought Carl singing “You are my Sunshine” to Negan would be changed for Beth, and obviously that wasn’t the case. Which isn’t to say they didn’t use that as an opportunity for some Beth symbolism/foreshadow, but still. They kept it in tact from the comics. 

And obvious they can’t do that literally with the Michonne/Elodie story line. If they don’t remix it for Beth, I don’t know exactly what they’ll do with it.

But the point is, we won’t know until we know. So I think it’s an awesome theory, and I hope everyone pointing toward it is right. But we just don’t have much evidence for it yet. But we’ll definitely keep an eye on it moving forward. Xoxo! 💝

Something I think is really important to understand about The Daryl Spoilers is that, if true, for a lot of us it’s actually not just about him ending up with a character outside our preferred ship. For me, it isn’t even mostly that. Nor is it the fact that it’s fairly OOC (and it sucks how TPTB are like “oh were you enjoying your ace rep, oh *tsk* so sorry”). Again, for me that isn’t even the majority of it.

For me, it come down to the same thing that made me lose all faith in the writers and quit the show: in my opinion, structure and pacing-wise, in terms of the basics of how stories are told, it’s an utterly inexcusable false step.

For Daryl, ending up with someone romantically or sexually or both should have always been a massive character shift. The writers and NR and basically everyone involved in the show has been explicit about this for years. It would have made the most sense—really the only sense—for it to be someone he knew well (and, more importantly, someone the audience knew well) and for it to happen gradually over a long period of both story time and visible time.

Meaning it should under no circumstances happen during a time jump, with a random character we don’t know, told via a fucking flashback.

You don’t tell a story that important with a “oh by the way this happened”, seemingly out of nowhere. It’s like they fucked up literally everything one could fuck up in terms of how this story should be told. It’s as if they made a list of important boxes to tick in how they do this and then they laughed and threw the list into the garbage disposal. It’s not just offensive, it’s baffling.

But it’s also in keeping with a pattern. Over quite a while, these writers have demonstrated a deeply weird tendency to establish things very solidly, to set things up according to classically intelligible narrative conventions, and then, for reasons best known to the gods, completely piss it down their leg.

This is what happened for me with Beth, which is something else I think many people totally fail to grasp. The difficulty in accepting her death wasn’t only that a lot of us wanted her to be alive because we loved her, and it wasn’t only that a lot of us deeply and understandably resented half our ship being summarily executed. It was that in regards to how the story was being told, they perfectly set up a fake death/surprise resurrection, and a replacement for Andrea, and then didn’t follow through.

Now, it can be cool to buck story conventions. It can be a neat trick to confound the audience’s expectations. But to paraphrase the very problematic Strunk and White, unless you’re pretty goddamn sure you’re going to get it right, it’s generally better to stick to the conventions.

They bucked the conventions and they did it for no apparent reason, according to no apparent logic, and didn’t bother to justify any of it other than “well life is just random and awful sometimes”, which as a justification is insufficient, because stories are not real life and do not work the same way. And if you’re going to confound the audience’s expectations, you better make it make sense for them. Otherwise it just feels frustratingly random.

The exact same thing appears to be happening here. They’re doing the precise opposite of all the things that would make sense and at least at this point there’s no apparent reason for doing do. Granted that none of us have seen it yet, but at least at this point it looks wildly clumsy. It comes off like flailing—probably because it is flailing.

Often when a writer does something I don’t agree with in how they’re telling their story, I can at least discern and respect their logic. I can see what they were going for. But with this show, over and over, I have no earthly fucking clue what the writers were thinking. I simply do not understand it.

And like... I always feel vaguely conceited when I say things like this but it’s still true: I’ve been constructing and analyzing stories for the majority of my life by now, and I’ve been writing professionally for about a decade. I’ve been editing professionally for roughly half of one. My major in college was almost narratology. One clearly doesn’t have to have done those things to identify a bad move and understand why it’s bad, but when I say “this story doesn’t work”, I extremely know what I’m talking about. If I was editing this as a manuscript, I’d hand it back to the author and say “you’ve got something interesting here but you have a lot of developmental work to do, my friend”.

If these spoilers are accurate, then unless there’s a major factor here that somehow justifies it, they fucked all of it up, literally everything, and I’m offended by it.

I love working with Emily. Daryl and Beth never really had any scenes together, so it was a unique pairing. Emily is a very honest actress. She’s a singer and songwriter and she writes from her heart. And that’s the way she acts. She believes what she says. It’s been very interesting to have this grunting, wild animal paired with this nice, young, eloquent girl who speaks her mind. One taught the other how to fight, and one taught the other how to feel - Norman Reedus

AMC cancelled her panels so she won't be asked questions about Beth's body. And then she just says "you never know"?? AMC knows about TD. They know about Kate Nash interview. They allow her to do it. They allow her to post pics from her trailer. Why not the panels then?

You have to understand that what AMC is kind of unchartered territory. No show has ever handled a fake-death arc so well and on such a deep and detailed level. We’re watching television history as it happens. Without any real precedence, the network, TPTB, and the cast and crew have to adjust as they go. There will be mistakes and unforeseen problems that will be cause for adjustment. I’m fairly certain that TPTB decided early on Emily shouldn’t do panels, especially in the States, as they come with too much scrutiny and pressure. I don’t think they foresaw the Kate Nash interview going as it did. They probably did not expect Kate to be persistent. Emily also was very comfortable around Kate, with some alcohol in her system, which probably made her a little more loose-lipped. But that was an error, and TPTB corrected it as she never did an interview with Kate Nash again, nor did Kate ever release the interview she did with Erik Jensen. 

Back in May @bethgreenewarriorprincess reached out to him on Twitter, and he said it was “got lost in the ether” because Kate went on tour while he got a role on Mr. Robot (X) (X). But that’s just plain wrong because they conducted the interview and posted about it on Twitter in real time. Which I receipted.

Kate probably signed an NDA herself, and the interview will be released after Beth’s return. She declared herself “team captain” on Twitter, and AMC probably thought it better to bring her into the fold, because Kate stopped talking about Team Delusional pretty quickly.

In regards to Emily’s trailer, I think she posted those two pictures back in fall 2015 as a test (X). She wanted to see what she could get away with in terms of selfies. Her first trailer picture, which she captioned in such a way to make it seem like she was in a trailer for Love On the Sidelines, went unnoticed for the most part. People only caught on when she posted the second picture as people began to comment that it looked like Norman’s trailer, so she deleted it and hasn’t posted any pictures sense. Again, everyone working on the show is working relatively unexplored territory.

So I listened to both the Lauren and Lennie podcast convos and if I’m being honest, I felt a little disappointed listening. Nothing stood out as suspicious to me until the very end where both she and Lennie mentioned “cast phone calls”. She goes on to explain it during her wrap up at the end that some of the cast has been having calls set up throughout quarantine. That made my ears perk up a bit. Have you listened yet and was there anything that stood out as suspicious to you?

Agreed on both counts. I finally listened to both episodes last night and nothing huge jumped out at me, either. In a way, these are very much like the Talk Dead to Me podcast, which I listen to as well. Whenever they say anything interesting that pertains to TD, I always tell you guys about it. But most of the episodes are just interviews with the actors or others who have worked on the show, and focuses on their careers, how they got into acting, etc. Which is fine, but not exactly what we’re all looking for, right? 

So yeah, these two episodes were MOSTLY that. Nothing too spectacular.

But I agree about the calls Lennie mentioned at the end. Apparently Emily has been doing Friday night phone calls to connect with cast and writers during the quarantine. They try to pass it off as just reconnecting with old friends during the pandemic, and maybe it is. We can’t see either way for sure. But it still feels suspicious to me. Reconnecting is one thing. But EVERY Friday night, during a time we KNOW they’re working on the show. And it’s not just old co-workers, but the writers who are mentioned? Hmm. 👀👀👀 Xoxo! 😘

Beth Greene is so alive. It’s strangely comforting to know that even when we couldn’t really see her, the credits moving too fast, she was still there. She was still with us, episode after episode, from the beginning. <3

What is the flash on the beginning credits. I have never seen it. What does it mean?

The flash at the beginning of the opening credits is a clip of four people running.   Beth is one of the four people. You can see her yellow polo and ponytail. The clip has been there since 5x01, long before Beth’s “death”, and it is an original scene. It had to have been filmed specifically for the opening credits. It appears that she’s running with Edwards and two other people from Grady. TPTB hid this egg in plain sight. This clip should never have existed, as Beth never supposedly made it out of Grady, and on TPTB also update the credits as the episodes progress anyway. For example, TPTB removed Glenn/Steven’s slide after the season seven premiere. Not only has the flash stayed, but so has Emily’s tunnel slide.

It’s so sad that the reason why Daryl opened that door the night Beth got taken was because he was the happiest he had ever been with her and he got distracted by his feelings which made him careless. For the first time in his life, he was so relaxed and happy that he forgot how dangerous the world was outside of that home. He thought he could finally let his guard down, then he lost her. That’s heartbreaking.

things which, if Beth is really dead, make basically no fucking sense and for which I demand an explanation

Theme music, for a character more closely associated with music than any other fucking character on the show.

No funeral whatsoever when it would have been unbelievably easy to show at least a few seconds of one in the cold open for 5x09, when instead we got a big switcheroo with Tyreese’s funeral and Nicotero fucking said as much.

Why the fuck we were shown any of that shit at all, none of that made any sense but seemed to be hinting at sense quite a bit.

Why are key people freaked out about cars in 5x09 and 5x10, I mean Daryl won’t even go near them at that one point, he just looks upset and vanishes into the woods with no explanation to speak of which no one appears to find strange.

The BETH GREENE IS STRONG campaign in 4b/5a which was not even remotely subtle.

The ship, which - I’m sorry - was decidedly sailing. The champagne wasn’t dry yet but it was fucking sailing.

The fake death/survival themes which crossed over at several points into outright foreshadowing.

The DC spoon.

“She’s just gone.” Over and fucking over.

The promo blitz for Beth’s 5a arc, in isolation from all other characters, which I’m pretty sure is unprecedented for a swiftly-offed mostly secondary character.

The blatantly obvious Andrea parallels.

The relentless Christ imagery.

Pretty much all of Slabtown, like its very existence.

Pretty much all of Grady, like its very existence.

Pretty much all of the writing, and do not fucking tell me that Beth’s death was just meant to be shocking and tragic; as a shocker it mostly failed because I think a lot of people were expecting Beth to bite it and as tragedy it was literally unbelievable failure on the part of people who know how to do tragedy quite well and have an excellent track record of doing so.

The clocks, which were tied to Beth and really no other character.

“People like me, they can live!”

The music box, and do not fucking tell me it only represented “hope” because that’s stupid and also we’ve basically had it confirmed that it represented Beth and as of the s5 SF it was still playing/singing.

The fact that subtle references to her keep showing up long after her plot was supposed to be done, usually in close connection with Daryl.

All the weird shit with the stuff that was allegedly filmed during shooting for s5 that we never saw.

Where the fuck are those hundreds of walkers Nicotero mentioned, you don’t just throw something like that onto the cutting room floor, and no it does not make any sense for him to have been referring to the herd in s6 because as far as we know they hadn’t filmed any of that yet.

Emily did no episode commentary for what was supposedly her last season on the show.

It took Emily forever and a day to join the cast of another show on any kind of permanent basis when she was well-situated to do so and should have immediately jumped to something else pretty major, with an audience similar to TWD’s, and sure okay maybe she doesn’t want to be typecasted but come the fuck on.

She won’t stop talking about Beth and won’t stop promoting herself in close connection to the show when it makes sense for her to be dialing it back at least a fucking little if she wants to move on with her career.

Gimple essentially pulling the same exact shit as what Mazzara did with Andrea/Laurie Holden, for which he had a front row seat for how unpleasant it almost certainly was and was in fact called in to fix the script for.

Despite all the TWD-related promo Emily hasn’t had a single fucking panel on the subject in an entire year and appears to only be willing to discuss it in settings where it’s possible to tightly control what she’s asked and will say and even then she doesn’t say much beyond canned lines and vague stuff we’ve heard a million times.

Frequent neglect of including her character in memoriam-type stuff on behalf of entities officially connected with the show.

All these figures of Beth being released concurrently a year after her death when it would have made endlessly more sense to release them at this point last year and for which they probably had ample preparation time.

Sure, not all of this necessarily means anything and there are explanations you could come up with for at least some of this stuff, and things in life are often simply inexplicable. But this is a fucking mountain. And instead of eroding with time, it just keeps getting higher.

Daryl Tried to Bury Beth at a White Church During the Missing 17 Days - Evidence

Okay, so here’s my big theory for this week, and I’m really excited about it. How it came to me is a little complicated, but I’ll keep it as concise as possible. @boltthrutheheart​ messaged me several weeks ago with something that confused her, and she asked for my input on it. Here’s part of the message she sent me:

Topps card trader started releasing a new set of base cards today, and they had little biographic snippets on the back of them. Both of Beth’s cards mention Daryl in the little bio snippet, and one of Daryl’s cards mentions Beth. For Beth’s cards the one from season 4 reads:

“After witnessing her father’s beheading and fleeing the prison, Beth develops a close friendship with Daryl. Just when the two seem to have found sanctuary, however, Beth is kidnapped and brought to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.”
