So far for me it’s been something like:

1. Become aware of how and when you tearing yourself down.

2. Now that you can catch yourself doing it. Offer counters to the negative self talk. A really useful thing I read was to talk to yourself almost the way you would child. Gentle and patient. Even when they fuck up.

3. Take time to celebrate your small accomplishments. You’ve been attacking yourself for every little mistake. Apply that same fervor to the positive things in your life. Did the dishes even though you didn’t want to? Fuck yeah! Got up and took shower? YES!!! You are taking positive steps to feeling better. Celebrate it.

4. Make lists of things you’re good at/ like about yourself. The first time I did this the only two things in my list we’re that I liked my hair and I had good friends. It was start.

5. Don’t beat yourself up if you screw up steps 1-4. It’s counter productive. When I catch myself calling my self stupid for some mistake or other my response now is,“We don’t talk to ourselves like that anymore. What’s something constructive that could actually help solve the problem.”

Most of the time that seems to work. Not always. But more and more Everytime.

I hope any of that made sense.

Okay, but saying that she was culturally “of wholly Greek upbringing” isn’t quite right, because she grew up in Egypt and lived in Egypt, as generations of her Ptolemaic ancestors had for about 200 years. Ptolemaic Egypt was a complicated bicultural society: culturally, people placed a prestige on Greek culture while allowing preexisting Egyptian religious practices to flourish, and politically, the Ptolemies integrated themselves into traditions of Egyptian kingship to gain local respect and blended local Egyptian leadership structures with their central government.

@nathanielthecurious It actually is very accurate to Cleopatra’s life. She grew up in the Macedonian court of Alexandria, her Greek capital, wherein she was raised a Macedonian princess whose family used Egyptian customs (including herself) as propaganda, as you mentioned here. Her upbringing, identity and ethnicity were thoroughly Greek. The Ptolemies purposely kept themselves above the natives, including segregation laws in Alexandria and other Greek cities, and only placing Greeks in higher level positions - this was very different from the Seleukids who followed Alexander’s mixed cultural ideals. Cleopatra was guilty of both of these, in spite of her brilliant propaganda campaign. What happened outside the Greek spheres of influence in Egypt is rather irrelevant to her life. People really need to remember the Ptolemies were inherent oppressors and Cleopatra was a Macedonian despot. Her biographers besides Michael Grant’s definitive work all have great works on this particular “issue.”

On this day, 25 November 1960 three sisters – Patria Mercedes Mirabal Reyes, Minerva Mirabal Reyes and Antonia María Teresa Mirabal Reyes were assassinated for their opposition to the US-backed Dominican dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. They had started a group called the Agrupación Política 14 de Junio (14 June Movement), named after the date of a massacre Patria witnessed. Two of the sisters, Minerva and Maria Teresa, were imprisoned, raped and tortured on several occasions and their husbands arrested and tortured too. However, they persisted in their resistance and Trujillo decided to put an end to them once and for all. On May 18, 1960, Minerva and Maria Teresa, along with their husbands, were convicted and were sentenced to three years in prison for undermining the security of the Dominican state. In a strange gesture, on August 9, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal were released by express provision of Trujillo. Their husbands, however, remained in prison. Purportedly a show of generosity, it was however part of a plan by whuich they would be assassinated by the Servicio de Inteligencia Militar secret police. On November 25 the sisters and Rufino de la Cruz, who was driving their jeep, were stopped by Trujillo’s henchmen. They were separated and clubbed to death. The bodies were then gathered and put in the jeep, which was run off the mountain road in an attempt to make their deaths look like an accident. Nope. Girl 2 saw that Girl 1′s absolutely accurate analysis was being shut down just because it wasn’t stated in an intellectual way (in spite of its validity). So Girl 2 reinforced Girl 1′s opinions in solidarity and made sure that it was absolutely clear that Girl 1 was factually correct. WITHOUT taking credit for her observations (”kim is right” instead of “Actually, kim”)

If you read thirty pages of a book and hate it, that’s a good analysis. Girl 1 literally said, “It sucked for these reasons, and I only got through 30 pages.” She was absolutely paying attention and trying to get it. But if all you get is a headache, fuck that book.
