The Joker's iconic look is a fun little pop culture fossil. Like, he's not a circus clown or a birthday clown or a rodeo clown or any other kind of clown you might bump into today: he's specifically a vaudeville clown. We don't have those anymore, so that specific type of clown is now just "the Joker".

i actually drew a little comic kind of explaining the premise!

this version of the joker is one that exists earlier into batmans career (which means he hasnt done the Worst yet) and one that is purely motivated by chaos. he lacks a sense of identity, and doesnt stick to any set rules or morals. it makes it hard for him to find meaning.

however, the one thing that always stays the same is his admiration for batman. because of batman, joker wants to change for once. eventually, bruce reluctantly agrees to joker's idea, under the guise that its a 'temporary alliance' for a case
