20 years ago today Buffy the Vampire Slayer made its television debut. Back then TV wasn't like it was today and you either watched a show in its time slot or you didn't. I caught an episode here and there but I wish I would have had time to watch each episode as it aired originally. I didn't really get taken in by its brilliance until I borrowed the seasons that were out on dvd from my sister Cassidy and watched them with Genine probably around 2001/2002. This is when my fangirl life began. Since then I have met some of the actors and made some amazing friends because of our mutual love for this show. I am thankful for the comfort and experiences it has guided me through and inspired. This show isn't just about some silly California girl who slays vampires, at it's core, this show has taught me more about life than anything else and even inspired names of those closest to me. I could go on and on speaking volumes in this subject but I would have needed to start the post days ago to get it all. Buffy the Vampire Slayer isn't just a television show, it's life.

You guys. Last weekend was EVERYTHING. Where do I even start??

Like. When @kathubs saw that Amber Benson and Sarah Kuhn were going to be in Chicago for a book signing, she was all, LET’S GO And I was just like, ?? We just… go to Chicago??

I’d never really done anything quuite like that before, but I am SO so so glad I did because I had the best time!

Also, if you were under the impression that Katie was the sweetest, most wonderful mom-friend you could ever want – well, you’d be 10000% correct. After all, she put up with me all weekend!

We drank, we panicked, we learned about science. OH WE SAW A DRAG SHOW and had drinks with @tebone23 and @thewayyoumadethemsuffer and it was amazing and we also gay-ed out over how beautiful and wonderful Amber is, and how the book signing might go, since I was the only one who hadn’t met Amber before. It was so gay. I loved it.

But the book signing! Ugh, it was so great. (the morning of, though, was kind of terrible because me and Katie were both so anxious that we could barely eat breakfast and we were so fucking nervous I swear we were close to making ourselves sick.) Sarah Kuhn did a reading from her book, Heroine Complex, and then they both took questions. I’m not gunna go through the whole Q&A or anything, but they both talked a bit about their creative process and overcoming writers’ block, and I enjoyed that. Sarah talked about her time as a journalist as well, which I found really interesting.

And Amber was so lovely and funny and quirky and gorgeous and I love her so much. Seriously, she is an angel. She kept looking around the room and she’d smile when she’d catch your eye, and she kept bragging on her friends, and she was so good at making eye contact and being truly engaged with everything you’d say to her. She kept smiling so bright and I swear to god when she smiled at me, I melted. AND I GOT A HUG! I wish I got to ask Amber more about Witches of Echo Park, but oh well. I got to talk to her way more than I acutally expected and I just. I really hope she knows how much she means to her fans. She’s such a sweetie. I can’t say enough nice things about her, or Sarah for that matter. They were both so generous with their time when they were obviously exhausted from the conference they attended the day before.

By the way, Katie is practically famous and I love it. Amber knows who Katie is, like really knows! How fast did my head turn when she said Katie’s full name?? It was great. We met @justanothercinemaniac, who was very cool to chat with and who was wearing a nifty mutant enemy shirt, when he recognized Katie too. It was exciting meeting and being around other fans. I could probably go on about that weekend for forever but I mostly just wanted to say how damn thankful I am that I got to have this experience. It was so great hanging with @tebone23 and @thewayyoumadethemsuffer and getting to meet @justanothercinemaniac ! And honestly, Katie, I wouldn’t have done any of this without you (not to mention how utterly lost I would have gotten walking around Chicago without your sense of direction) so thank you, thank you, thank you! You are such a wonderful human and I love that we basically share a brain, and I really hope we get to do this trip again (and that we can spend more time at museums!!) when The End of Magic comes out!

GUYS it was the most perfectly magical weekend!!!!!

Alyssa is the loveliest person–so nice and SO sassy. And so gay! I laughed my head off every time she’d get speechless about Amber ;D

Hanging out with @thewayyoumadethemsuffer and @tebone23 was amazing. I’m so grateful we all got to meet up! You made the weekend much more fun and more gay, and India it was GENIUS to stick around after the signing. Bless your little gay heart for doing that.

Sarah Kuhn is a wonderful writer and such a cool lady, and I really hope she didn’t feel too left out or anything, since so many people were there just to see Amber and didn’t talk to her. I’m actually kinda glad she never had a line, though, because I got to have a lovely conversation with her, and she gave a great author rec! Go read Molly Harper, kids–and especially check out Sarah’s books, One Con Glory and Heroine Complex! One Con Glory has a million Buffy references and it’s about a journalist meeting an actor at a con. Heroine Complex features kickass Asian-American heroines, some steamy romance, and a lot of laughs! Seriously, I can’t recommend Sarah’s books enough!

Amber, Amber, Amber…. where do I even start? We were so nervous. SO nervous. And then she walked in looking all cute and tiny in her big coat, and she sat down and everything was perfect. She just puts everyone at ease with her presence. She kept bragging on Sarah and her other friends and making them take the spotlight, it was adorable. And she kept looking around at the crowd, and making eye contact, and smiling her beautiful smile, and making us all die!

When the reading and Q&A part were done, we lined up for the signing and went straight to the back, to give ourselves more time to calm down. That’s when @justanothercinemaniac somehow recognized me! I have no idea how you did that, but it was so cool to meet you!

Waiting, dying, panicking, freaking, trying not to throw up, fangirling…. then it was time. Amber is SO LOVELY GUYS. Look at this smile:

She remembered me from last year/twitter! She said “oh I loved the books you gave me last time!” because I gave her a couple more this year. Then when she was signing my books, she said, “It’s Katie, right?” and she just kept saying my name. And last year I awkwardly asked her out for a drink and she said to tweet her, so I said “the offer still stands this year! both of you!” and she and Sarah both smiled and said I was very sweet. We took a picture and she HUGGED ME and I didn’t even have to ask her! She just did it! And she thanked me for coming out to see her, because she knows I don’t live in Chicago and she’s so lovely and she said my name and oh my god.

Ok so we stuck around after the signing to get more time, which was so smart and so necessary, because even though this year’s interaction with Amber was 100% better than last year’s, I still needed more. (SHE’S SO WONDERFUL, THERE’S NEVER ENOUGH TIME) 

We kinda stood around in a circle chatting with her and look at how cute she is (and how in love with her Alyssa is):

Her friend Michi was there and Amber was being like her promoter–making her give us her card and tell us about what she does. it was so so sweet! She’s so supportive of everyone and I love that she uses her celebrity powers to lift up other people. GO AMBER!

at some point I’m pretty sure she was asking us how we all met, so we told her Alyssa and I are tumblr friends, and India and Tianna and I met on Twitter after the signing last year, and then @justanothercinemaniac said he recognized me from tumblr, and I said “yeah I guess I’m tumblr famous!” and Amber looked right at me and said “Yeah! Katie Hubbard!” and I was speechless. She just like… she knows my name! She knows my tweets and books and she knows who I am. Oh my god. Ohhhhh my god.

Eventually she went to go sign some more books for online orders and we were putting our coats on to go. I couldn’t just leave without saying bye though, so I ran over and thanked her for being so generous with her time, and for coming out again even though she was tired from her conference. She said “thank YOU Katie for coming all this way to see me!” and gave me ANOTHER HUG! AMBER HUGGED ME TWICE! SHE KNOWS MY NAME! SHE TOOK SO MANY PICTURES WITH US! SHE”S SO SWEET!!!!!

I love you guys! And @justanothercinemaniac thank you for approaching me, it was so cool to be tumblr famous for a hot second, and your shirt was awesome!
