In this digital age our own desires can be compiled, manipulated and broadcast back to ourselves, all with just an algorithm. In this digital age the medium of social media is the most captivating mirror that reflects back our own interests and desires, showing us who we are by what we search, when we post, how we frame our own image and why we choose to share freely and of our own accord.
Mon 9:33 PM
Coated by a sunlit glow bending around the slight curve to her dimples and with an arm stretched atop now wrinkled sheets, she reaches out to me. Watching her stretch and smile, I shift slightly out of reach, if only to push this moment further into the future. Guided by the light that remains caught up in between sky blue linens and deep brown eyes, I remain transfixed by a radiance nearly indescribable. Staring into a moment which remains beyond total comprehension, I also reach out for something to cling to, for something to string together this undiscovered symphonic arrangement of words needed articulate this very morning. I look at her and I see something unique, I feel something singular, I hear nothing other than our own breath and respond only with three simple words, I love you.
Thur 10:24 One Kiss
With hands entwined, fingertips meet the edges of that Others palms, tracing micro sized circles across the warmth of her skin. A smirk emerges, growing still larger as eyes lock tight upon that Other gazing back. Wholly immersed in the serenity of standing near, the moment calls for a greater connection and a closer touch. Captivated as we are, there is no choice but respond in kind. With no more reservations, we admit ourselves to the pleasure of just one kiss.
Wed 8:45 Curls
A smile deepens while watching the bends to soft brunette curls as they collectively fold themselves into ever more tangles. Some-thing takes hold of my attention as she does nothing more than lie silently but some-thing so much more than simply remaining motionless. Fully captivated by the simple beauty of watching her, as she is, breathing ever so slightly as to embrace no troubles and exhale no worries. Taking her advice I try to mirror her grace and ease about all things as I inhale in accordance.
Tue 6:35 Temporality
Tracing the length of her grin reaching out towards now revealed dimples, my eyes wander past bashful smiles and down to the way that she holds one hand encased in the other. Enveloping one palm atop the other and slowly circulating a pattern timed to the depth of her laughter a joy comes over us. Tucking back wavy brunette strands behind her ear she presses on into still further laughter, daintily she glows with happiness. Coming to realize the fleeting temporality of such a moment we remember to be fully devoted to enjoying these subtle gestures of affection. She offers no alternative but to remain present with-in such an experience.
Tues 4:18 Unmediated Waves
Thoughts wander, images populate of sparkling blues and seacoast greens, our skin coated by warm yellow rays met with a gentle breeze flowing past bashful grins while we lay atop a shoreline meant for just the two of us. Framing the horizon complete with speckled cotton like clouds, we remain transfixed in a picturesque moment fully captivated by the beauty that is now. Watching the repetition of waves crashing forward and trickling back into a larger versions of itself, we take away natural lessons of progression, reclusion and the ever-present will to move through these moments unknown, unmeditated and always revealing.
Mon 10:30 Fingertip Folds
Brunette curls stretch and bend round the fingertip folds of her index and thumb fingers, she twiddles her hair, both curious and passively soothing herself. Cross-legged atop a water smoothened rock peppered with stained maple leaves she focuses down upon the fine texture of each strand. Choosing to explore the intricacies of her own, she forgoes the flurry of activity that carries now fallen maples into cyclonic bursts round these woodlands. Symbolic of her own attitudes about life, she remains ever fixated on her own desires, never overlooking the profundity in every moment.
Mon 10:44 Here, now
Tracing subtle bends to her auburn waves I follow the length of morning curls hanging aside a smile now present atop cream cotton linens. Exhaling slow and easy she shines along with yellow rays coming through and coating these outstretched hours of dawn, lingering long past a night full of warmth and comfort. Serene in this moment our eyes lock and our smiles grow as we recognize the exquisite pleasure of lying aside the other with nothing to do, no where to go, and no where else we’d rather be than here, now.
Fri 2:28 Pillowcases
Bouncing off sky blue walls, ricocheting off worn hardwood floors, a warming yellow catches the curves of her growing smile as she leans casually against a white framed doorway. Talk radio whispers from far off speakers as indistinguishable voices mummer throughout lofty halls. A slight crackle mixes with an aroma of breakfast wafting through empty bedrooms, arriving at bed posts.
Adjusting to a morning glow, eyes blink endlessly, introducing these shuttered moments of early delight. Embracing all apparent comforts, slow transitions into elongated outstretched movements begins this mornings contortions into possibilities both natural and unmediated.
Indecisive, eyes wander across ceiling tile and back behind the gradient darkness of lids. Hovering just above shallow exhalations, a growing warmth comes nearer. Unseen, a gentle moisture presses down upon unsuspecting lips as faces meet quietly upon pillowcases.
Thur 1:45 Speechless
Running fingertips through strawberry blondes, a light shimmer radiates upon the place where subtle curls meet scattered rays. Tracing the bends to that most sincere smile, my eyes follow the length of her grin, equally I learn to enjoy the depth and felicity to which she glows. Akin to the shine coating shoulders and subtle dimples, a certain refulgence comes forth demanding an attention to detail. Attention to the way light remains wrapped up in the hairsbreadth length between auburn twirls, the way those deep blues shift ever so slightly when her laughter grows, the way that even when she remains speechless she speaks to me in ways no other can.
On Racism
I'm sure you will be coming across many posts regarding Charleston and racism in general in the coming days. In general I try to be an objective observer and tend to refrain from additional commentary regarding societal issues but in this instance I cannot. Now is your chance to tune out and scroll down to avoid my two cents.
Still here..? Cool.
I have/do encounter racism as I'm sure many of you have/do. For me this has been at the granular level with people placing cultural expectations upon me that I have not placed upon myself, to overt explicit taunts about my minority status (and not in a playful way that I partake in with friends). In all honesty, it doesn't viscerally affect me. When it happens I abstract myself from the situation and drift off into thinking about the socio-economic factors which this person may have come from and the educational disparity they may be suffering from. I think, “they are culturally insensitive, they are not educated enough, they come from an oppressive back ground, their way of thinking is not entirely their fault.”
I make excuses for them as a way to mitigate their insults, their confusions and their own versions of oppression. This works from time to time and if they are willing I will challenge them on their beliefs, their opinions and their misconceptions about my personhood. If they are not willing the situation passes and we go our separate ways as if nothing ever really happened.
The assumption here is that these situations occur, opinions are heard or not, ideas are shared or not and that there is progress by virtue of time. We assume that because time passes these situations become less frequent and they somehow resolve themselves. I believe many of us assume that racism is an issue of the past, that we have moved onto to other issues and that we have made progress. In many ways we have made progress, we have made great progress.
However, when these situations reoccur (and they often do) for me that assumption is pressed and I question how much progress have we currently made? Where does progress end? When will we be understood by the content of our character and when will artificial stereotypes cease to characterize our race and our ethnicities?
Obviously these open ended questions rarely yield immediate results and tend to lead into more questions. Issues of race call into question issues of social class, issues of economic circumstance, issues of a well-rounded education and so on.
The difficulty here is the challenge to ourselves and our ability to even ask these questions honestly and genuinely.
Am I responsible for my interpretations of the Other?
Do I have the right to define the Other?
Am I racist?
I believe that progress in part comes from this self-reflection and that if we are to avoid racial stagnation or regression these kind of questions must remain ever-present. We must challenge ourselves to be aware of our own racism and to take responsibility for what we can control. We must set the example of a progressive mindset ourselves, lead by example and be open to the possibility that the Others well being is my responsibility. We must consider the possibility that unsubstantiated characterizations of the Other distort the true character of that Other and in doing so we contribute to our own versions of oppression.
Fri 11:40 The Remaining Distance
Tempered by the distance and spaces between us, we merely attempt to moderate this growing desire for that Other. With overwhelming sentiment stretching and traveling through fiber optics, across seas, past peaks and troughs within ocean beds, digitalism remains something that draws us closer but maintains our distance. Embedded in this virtual interaction we remain captivated by that curious but comforting Other, allowing ourselves to be influenced and inspired once again. Taking it only one day at a time, we grow and begin to fill the remaining distance between us with the possibilities of spending tomorrow together, then every day after that until we part again.
I do want the best for you and you truly do deserve it. First find that in yourself. Then find it in the world
Thur 9:20 Ever Present
Meandering through a world uncertain, we doubt, we challenge, and we persist in spite of what obfuscates a path to security and comfort. Often lost in the between of trials and tribulations and caught within great suffering we truly find ourselves in the space where pain, pleasure, and this ongoing desire to persist resides. Chasing what we know not and believing whole heartedly in a future not guaranteed, something other and more than we are comes over us from outside of us. Despite not being entirely ulterior to our very being, we attune and identify with this alterity. Becoming other than what we presently are and being altered by that which we are not, a simple truth comes forth through great strife and we remain ever present.
Tue 10:40 Grace
Slowly trickling in and beginning to coat glossy oak woods, a particularly warm yellow shimmer makes its way towards bedposts and cushioned postures. Not nearly awake but not wholesomely enveloped in dreams, hands coast the tops of linens, searching for the grace and touch of that Other. Content in these little moments, a lingering giddiness of certain frivolities both past and present coax simpers that are met with a subtle recognition. In between caressing hips and hands, a gaze into nothing comes over us and we are entrenched in a sensation that is lost in words. Beyond comprehension, we know not what is present but only that it is here and it is right and that we deserve every single second of it.
