Zory took a moment to just breathe and think for a bit, popping his head out from under the covers. “I mean… I didn’t do anything to really invite this. At least that I know of. I mean, I’ve always just… generally been nice to cats. Even if…“ He waved towards the window, “-this is freaking me out, I do like cats. Even admire them. Maybe cause I’m a bit catty, like you said.“
“So I really don’t get why I’d be cursed like this. I always treated cats well. If I saw one hurt, I would try to help it. If one was starving or thirsty, I would give it food and water. A few times I found abandoned kittens in bad situations, and I’d hand around the area keeping them safe for about a day to make sure the mama cat wasn’t coming back before getting them to a vet and finding them good humans to take care of them.”
He’s kind of spilling his guts here, working through his encounters verbally. What spills form his lips is kind of stream-of-consiousness, trying to get as much info out as he can.
“… Maybe the only thing that could have earned something’s ire is a more recent habit, but it really shouldn’t based on the way it works?. I know modern humans trap feral cats to spay and neuter cats to keep them from destroying ecosystems and multiplying too much, and I guess I can see the wisdom in that, so there are a number of times I’ve cast infertility spells, kind of like magic birth control, on trapped cats before setting them loose. I reasoned it was kinder that way, since they don’t have to deal with surgery scars healing. And it’s pretty easily undone, you just have to really want to have a kid and the spell is built to break then. I use it all the time. Animal cats… they don’t necessarily want to bear children. They want to mate, or are instinctively driven to, but they don’t usually mate outside of breeding cycles unlike bonobo or dolphins, who mate as much for pleasure as they do for offspring. They don’t make that connection between mating and kittens. Any supernatural entity would have that higher order thinking, be able to want to sire or bear children, so I don’t THINK that habit would earn their ire.”
He sighs, his brows knit. “Though… thinking back, feral and domestic cats were a lot more… I dunno, receptive? Friendly? Towards me. And it’s been like… about three and a half centuries since that’s been the case now that I think about it. I guess cats just stopped being cautious about me, like they somehow knew I wasn’t a threat. I thought it was strange for a while but I forgot about it after a decade or so. Thinking back to right before that…“
He hummed, pouring through his memory. He wasn’t really special in that regard, he didn’t have some kind of perfect recall or photographic memory. “I’m not sure, but I know I helped out a few cats here and there. I was in what’s currently Scotland at the time, but it was part of Great Britan back then. Maybe I ran into a fae then? There are faeries of all shapes and sizes, but if I encountered one it’d be hard to know, since Scotland is so full of faerie magic that the whole place reeks of it.“
“But yeah, though cats have basically trusted me, it’s never been like THIS. And I haven’t done anything special! I just do what I usually do, I haven’t had any weird encounters that I know of, or at least nothing out of my usual.“ He furrowed his brows for a bit, scratching his head before those brows shot back up again. “… You know, speaking of goddesses, now that I think about it, I have been helping a few celestials out with sorting out some contracts.”
He waved his hands emphatically, kind of animated as he explained. “I think I mentioned that before, that demons sometimes serve as cosmic lawyers? Well I got hired about a month before the catpocalypse started. Bastet hired me to represent her in a custody case. We wrapped up… a few days before this started, and she seemed happy enough with the results. I got paid and I thought that was that.“ He frowns. “Was she not actually happy with the contract?“
