Fun facts about procrastination and how to actually cope with it:
procrastination comes not from being lazy or underestimating the value of the task, but from OVERVALUING the significance of the task. In short, you feel like a Very Big and Very Important task is before you, and if you do anything even slightly wrong the world will explode. So a part of your brain insists that you put off this world-exploding risk in the hopes that you gain appropriate superpowers or smth in the mean time. It isn't very persuasive, so another part of your brain panics and screams that you must do it NOW and you are a bad person for putting it off and you know how that thought cascade can go;
so, to actually overcome procrastination it is useful to dismember this mental contruct of something Very Big and Very Important. First of all, Very Big Things always consists of smaller steps. Each of which is easy and largely insignificant and carries no risk of the world exploding. Asking yourself "what is the tiniest thing I can do now?" can work wonders, even if this tiniest thing will be just "set aside the time to plan this task and outline the actual first step";
similarly, even if the task is Actually Important, it is vital to remind yourself that it is not World-Ending Important. There is always a spectrum of success and a spectrum of failure. Paradoxically, to help you do the task you're procrastinating, it's important to remember that in the vast majority of cases not accomplishing the task perfectly neither kills you nor sentences you to hell for your sins. Think about what is the worst that could happen. Okay. Rate the probability of it actually going that way. Okay. Think about the best that could happen, what would happen in your wildest fantasies and if the unicorns were real. Rate the probability of that too. And now think about the most boring outcome possible and rate its probability. Let these emotional extremes pass through you, inform you and release the thoughts that don't direct you to helpful actions here and now
