Face ID Under the Display Returns to Being an iPhone 15 Pro Rumor

Based on the latest rumors, it is now looking unlikely that iPhone 14 Pro models will have Face ID under the display as initially claimed.

Earlier today, display industry consultant Ross Young claimed that iPhone 14 Pro models will feature both hole-punch and pill-shaped cutouts near the top of the display. Young believes the hole will be for the Face ID dot projector, while the pill-shaped cutout will supposedly house the front camera and an infrared camera for Face ID at a minimum.

While the two-hole design for iPhone 14 Pro models would not provide a completely seamless viewing experience, it would still be another step in that direction. And if Young and Kuo prove to be right, we might finally get an all-screen design next year.

All four iPhone 15 models slated for release next year will feature a pill-and-hole display design that replaces the notch, according to display industry consultant Ross Young, who has a respectable track record with display-related information.

In a tweet, Young shared a roadmap that indicates both standard and Pro models of the iPhone 15 will feature the pill-and-hole layout, which refers to a pill-shaped cutout for Face ID sensors and a hole for the front camera. By comparison, only iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to switch to the pill-and-hole design this year, with the standard iPhone 14 models expected to retain the same notch as iPhone 13 models.

Kuo: 2024 iPhone Could Be All-Screen With Face ID and Camera Under Display

Apple could launch its first full-screen smartphone in 2024, with the "iPhone 16 Pro" potentially the first Apple device to feature under-display Face ID and an under-screen front camera, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a tweet today.

I think the real full-screen iPhone will come in 2024. High-end iPhones in 2024 would adopt an under-display front camera alongside the under-display Face ID. A low-light condition is detrimental to front camera quality, and ISP & algorithm are critical for quality improvements.

In his earlier tweet, Kuo suggested that Apple's roadmap for adopting under-display Face ID in 2024 was "less of a technical issue" and more likely a marketing decision, but his latest thoughts on the matter appear to suggest that current hardware and software limitations could also be a factor as Apple works to perfect under-screen technology.

iPhone 14: How Crash Detection Works and How to Turn It Off

With the launch of the iPhone 14 and new Apple Watch models, Apple introduced a new safety feature called Crash Detection. Keep reading to learn what it is, how it works, and how to turn it on and off.

How Does Crash Detection Work?

While you're driving or you're a passenger in a motor vehicle, the motion sensor with a high dynamic range gyroscope and high-g accelerometer, GPS, barometer, microphone, and advanced motion algorithms work together in your iPhone or Apple Watch to accurately detect a crash.

When a severe crash is detected, an alert displays on your Apple Watch or ‌iPhone‌ display for 10 seconds. If you're still responsive, you can swipe the screen to call emergency services immediately or dismiss the alert if you don't need to contact them. If after 10 seconds you haven't interacted with your Apple device, a 10-second countdown will start. When it ends, emergency services are contacted.

When emergency services pick up, the following audio message from Siri begins playing on a loop with five seconds of silence between each replay: "The owner of this ‌iPhone‌ was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone." ‌Siri‌ will then relay your estimated location with latitude and longitude and search radius both to emergency services and through your device's speaker.

How to Enable Crash Detection

No setup is required. Crash Detection is enabled by default on the above-supported devices, so you don't need to do a thing. If you're concerned that the feature could mistakenly register a crash and call emergency services, you can disable it by following the steps below.

Apple in November 2022 launched its Satellite Emergency SOS via satellite service in the US and Canada, and while the feature is geared to help you in a genuine emergency, Apple's satellites also make it possible for you to share your location via Find My whenever you are off the grid.

Following Apple's Emergency SOS satellite feature announcement, every model in the iPhone 14 lineup — iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max — can connect directly to a satellite, thanks to a combination of custom-designed components and integrated software.

Also, Emergency SOS via satellite and Find My via satellite require iOS 16.1, so make sure your device is up to date by opening Settings and going to General -> Software Update.

Lastly, the satellite service is included for free for two years starting at the time of activation of a new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. After two years have elapsed, Apple's satellite features are expected to transition to a paid-for service.

Apple has officially launched its Emergency SOS via satellite service for iPhone 14 users in the US and Canada, with the feature coming to France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK in December 2022.

Here's how you would access the feature in a genuine emergency when you have no cellular coverage and the SOS symbol is visible in the top corner of your ‌iPhone 14‌:

Launch the Phone app.

Dial the emergency services (911 in the US, for example).

When the call fails, tap the green Emergency Text via Satellite button that appears.

Follow the onscreen prompts to communicate your emergency.

If you're in an area where emergency services can receive text messages, the text message will be sent directly, otherwise, it will go to a relay center with Apple-trained specialists that will be able to place an emergency call for you. Using satellite functionality requires your ‌‌iPhone‌‌ to connect to a satellite in the sky, so the ‌‌iPhone‌‌ will walk you through where to point your ‌‌iPhone‌‌ to get it connected to the nearest satellite.

To check it out for yourself, simply follow the steps below. Note that your device needs to be running iOS 16.1 or later for the features to show up.

iPhone 14: How to Enable 4K Cinematic Mode

Cinematic Mode utilizes Dolby Vision HDR and a technique called "rack focus" to seamlessly shift the focus from one subject to another when you're shooting video. It does this by locking the focus on the subject in a scene and blurring the background to achieve depth of field. If you subsequently move the camera to center on a new subject or a new subject enters the scene, Cinematic mode automatically switches the focal point to this new subject and blurs out the background.

For example, if you're shooting a video of someone and then a second person enters the scene, your iPhone will intelligently adjust the surrounding blur to focus-lock on the second person. It will even automatically switch back to the initial subject if the person's face looks away from the camera, effectively generating a sophisticated professional filmmaking effect on the fly.

On all four ‌iPhone 14‌ models, Cinematic mode videos can now be recorded in 4K, for higher resolution capture, at either 24 frames per second (film style) or 30 frames per second. The following steps show you how to change to the resolution.

iOS 15.4 Beta Lets You Use Face ID With a Mask On

The iOS 15.4 beta that was introduced today added a new feature designed to allow Face ID to be used with a mask and without an Apple Watch for authentication.

Apple says that the feature can "recognize the unique features around the eye" for authentication purposes. If you opt to use this feature during setup, you will need to rescan your face for ‌Face ID‌. From there, ‌Face ID‌ will be able to unlock your iPhone even when you're wearing a mask.

In the Settings app, there's a new "Use ‌Face ID‌ with a Mask" toggle that can be turned on or off if you change your mind about the mask, and there's a new feature to "Add Glasses" to make ‌Face ID‌ more accurate when you're wearing glasses and a mask at the same time.

Apple warns in the Settings app that ‌Face ID‌ is "most accurate" when it's set up for full-face recognition only. For ‌Face ID‌ with a mask to work, you must be looking at your device to get it to unlock, and it does not work when wearing sunglasses. ‌Face ID‌ with a mask can authenticate Apple Pay payments and it can be used in lieu of a login and password in apps that support ‌Face ID‌, unlike the prior Apple Watch ‌Face ID‌ feature.
