PBW Witch Shop & Zine Distro

The PBW Witch Shop is a curated selection of witchcraft and magic related zines, books, pin-back buttons, tarot cards and more.

We focus on traditional and folkloric witchcraft, animism, chaos magic, secular witchcraft, magical herbs and plants, queer witchcraft, tarot & Divination, witchcraft & magic in politics, history, culture, and social & racial justice,  and aspects of non-Wiccan forms of witchcraft, magic, and paganism.

Pre-Covid the Portland Button Works primarily made custom pinback button. Selling zines and books was secondary and more of a hobby for me to share things I’d like to read. Right now our business is pivoting to focus on books and zines that people can read in the comfort and safety of their own homes. Some items are from well known witchcraft and occult publisher and some are titles from small publishers with interesting items I don’t see in other shops but I’m excited to elevate.

If you struggle with meditation like I do, here’s a tip from my younger self that I actually forgot about until I started meditating again recently.

Let yourself be with the earth. Imagine roots sprouting from your feet, sinking past the floor or the ground, let them pass through the foundations of the building you are in if you are meditating inside, and literally place those roots into the earth with your minds eyes.

To add to this, as @witches-ofcolor reminded me, finding focus through your breathing can be extremely helpful as well and it works extremely well for me after placing my roots. I generally find my focus shifting to my heartbeat and reaching a very calm almost trance like state where my conscious seems to be somewhere eles.

I hope this helps someone who is struggling with the actual process of meditation. It can seem very hard and complicated in the beginning but trust me, if you stick with it, results will come.

Black spiritualists and Black magic practitioners, who do you pray to if not the Orisha?

Which deities, divinities, or energies do the rest of us African descended spiritualists, energy workers and magic practitioners pray to and work with if not the Orisha?

If one is strongly against initiation and organized religion, who do we turn to if we are under the belief that you cannot invoke the energies of Orisha without being initiated into one of the Orisha centered religions?

And this question is not to disrespect the ancestors, but for those who believe that initiation is the only proper way to really commune with Orisha, what do we tell to other Black folks who wish to work with a specific energy or who need comfort, guidance and unconditional love from a divinity or a personification of nature or specific archetype of love or war or music or healing?

Do we then turn to the Egyptian/Kemetic energies? Do we work with the Greek or Norse gods or deities of other open cultures? Or is your advice simply to revere and invoke one's ancestors? And if the latter, what if you don't know much of your direct lineage? What if your past few generations of your family have been abusive, abused or toxic and you are not sure if you trust the guidance of your great uncle or great great grandma?

Personally I’ve always been drawn towards Egyptian energies but in more recent times I’ve been pulled to look more at practices from home. It’s hard to find information though because colonisation did a through job and a lot of our practice was taught through speaking and never written down.

traditionally, kabbalah is jewish mysticism that isnt supposed to be studied until one is 40 and has studied the entire torah and talmud several times. nowadays you only really start learning kabbalah or other ideas inspired by it when you already have a strong foundational base. anyway what im trying to say is that the co-opting of kabbalah by wealthy celebrities and ‘””””” new age”””””” people is straight up cultural appropriation and wearing a red string doesnt make you a kabbalist.

This is a problem with the occult in general. So much Jewish influence is appropriated left and right, coupled with the anti-semitism its just awful.

Honestly as an occultist myself I want to rewrite and reexamine many of our occult books and text and remove the Kabbalah-istic influence. I’m currently redoing the Smith waitte deck and going through to remove appropriative content.

The funny thing is that despite being seemingly against witch craft Christian mysticism exist and is completely open for people to use and can be used without appropriation. On top of that it’s also legit textbook occult content and can be studied as well.

Not to mention Enochian magic…basically what I’m trying to say is that there are tons of other alternatives to going the route of appropriation people just need to do the work.

and of course, I want to clarify that not all aspects of Christianity are open to practice, especially those aspects tied to cultural communities. But the part that screams occult to most people is open, it’s just a matter of learning. It’s much better to learn those than to steal from a culture that’s constantly oppressed.

Even a lot of Christian mysticism is stolen or fabricated from Jewish practices, or in some cases from Muslim practices. Very little of it (in my experience) isn’t appropriated, and a decent amount of the stuff that is is usually not considered Christian- it just comes from a Christian majority culture.

I hadn’t even thought of that, but Christianity itself depending on the sect has a way of absorbing and using other practice in not so good ways. I think of anything Catholicism is what I had in mind, though I should have made that clearer. Catholcisim itslef dabbles into the supernatural considerably, and many of what is used in mass and in other rituals, of harnessed can be applies to the occult in a way that can get you very similar results. We make it a habbit of speaking to angels and saints, and communicating with deities on the other side in a way that’s non-appropriative (if that’s what you’re looking for). Catholocisim literally screams occult, and if you’re just scratching the surface to harness that power, it’s pretty much fine to use as long as you’re respectful and stay in your lane. Catholicism is a cornerstone of the occult imo, and I think people can dissect it in order to use it for that without being appropriative. Of course my opinion on this is likely to change over time, but for the most part if you’re respectful of the practice, then you should really look into it for occultism.

After many requests, I’ve made a rebloggable version of my ‘Weather Magic’ page. Here you will find heaps of resources to help you with weather/storm craft. If you’ve read some of my previous posts about weather magic you will notice some similarities - that is because this is a collection of every weather witching post that I’ve ever posted compiled into handy resources post.

Weather Magic

The term “weather magic” or “weather witching” has been used to mean anything from divination and forecasting of weather to actual control and manipulation of the weather itself. From calling up treacherous storms to destroy another’s crops or providing fair winds for those at sea, witches (and even those who do not consider themselves to be such) have always been involved with weather magic. When you consider that most forms of magic are based around an agricultural past, the ability to affect and predict the weather was considered an invaluable skill. After all, if your family’s livelihood depended on the success of your crops (or the ability to find water as it did in my family’s case), weather magic would be an extremely handy thing to know.

Why the url Storm Born Witch?

I am quite fortunate, as the gift for weather related magic comes easily to my family. For generations, the men in my family have been dowsers or water diviners. However, it wasn’t until after I displayed an aptitude to weather related magic that I was told about my family’s history with it. My grandfather was the last water diviner in the family and he died when I was very young so I was never taught how to divine for water. My grandmother was the one to teach me what little she knew about weather magic - the rest either occurred naturally or I picked up along the way.

Calling Up A Wind - Whistling Up A Wind

This is the most common form of weather magic and has been practiced for hundreds of years. Depending on the pitch and tone of the whistle a witch can create a gentle breeze or a sharp gust of wind. Traditionally, if the skill of whistling up a wind does not come naturally to you the option of making a ‘wind whistle’ out of willow or alder wood is available.

Here in Australia, whistling up a wind is probably the most common form of magic I do. I honestly do not go a day without whistling up a cool breeze. It’s bloody hot here and sometimes a cool breeze is just what you need.

Storm Casting

Storm casting is the art of creating storms. There are many different methods to creating storms and bringing rain. The method used by my family is to fill a jug with water and while sitting outside (or facing a window) pour the water into a basin or bowl. Dip the tip of your pointer finger into the water and slowly make five clockwise circles in the water (if you have a pendant necklace this can be used instead - just above the water in the bowl). As you are making the circles call the wind to bring in a storm by blowing (or whistling a continuous low note - the sound of wind over the mouth of a glass bottle) over the water in the basin.

Ways to Stop a Storm (Dispersing, Binding & Preventing)

There are multiple ways to stop a storm. The most common are dispersing or binding storms. However there are also ways to prevent storms from coming by directing them away from where you are. This is great if you’re holding an event outside and you need good weather.

Dispersing

This method involves spreading the storm out over a large area thereby minimising its effects. You can disperse a storm by calling winds to blow it away (or in a certain direction) or if you favour using weather maps you can draw the low pressure system moving away and gradually dissipating.

Binding (Storm Catching)

This method is also called ‘storm catching’ and involves catching a storm and binding it within an object (usually a bottle or knots) so it can be released gradually at a later date by pulling out the cork or undoing the braid/knots.

Storm catching or “reeling in a storm” is even more difficult than storm casting so it’s always wise to think before you cast. Too much energy put into a storm and it will go on for weeks (and cause some flooding - basement incident) or it will be extremely violent and knock down power lines and tree branches. Too little energy and all you will get is a 5 minute shower of rain.

Preventing a Storm (Weather Maps)

However, if you wish to prevent a storm from forming, you’re going to have to pull out the weather maps. To make a weather map all you need to do is to print out a map of your local area or the area you’re trying to keep a storm away from.

Just use google maps and don’t make the area too big or you might seriously strain yourself magically. Then laminate the map - now you have your own ‘whiteboard’ to draw weather symbols on to generate certain types of localised weather.

To practice this kind of magic you really do need to know how weather systems work and how they’re likely to move; knowing a little bit about meteorology goes a long way.

Once you’re ready, find out what the weather is predicted to be and draw it on your map. Now draw the high/low pressure systems moving so that the area you’re trying to protect doesn’t get rain. This method can also be used to bring rain to a certain area.

Sandwich correspondences

Fruit correspondences

Vegetable correspondences

Tea correspondences (sun tea, tea in general, floral tea)

Flower correspondences- can be used as decoration, for flower crowns, as a fun nature activity (collecting them respectfully, of course), and edible flowers can be used for deserts, drinks, and salads!

Desserts- here’s some witchy dessert recipes, perfect for any picnic!

(Tiny strawberry pies, cranberry pistachio shortbreads, cardamom pear cake, ginger and fig tart, apricot coconut bites, and lavender tea bread)

Locations- fun witchy locations for picnics include:

🌹a botanical garden, floral garden, or any sort of garden (perfect for fae, floral, air, green, life, spring, and summer witchcraft)

☀️a sunny open field/area (probably has wild flowers!, great for air, sun, floral, and weather witchcraft)

🌙⭐a night picnic under the stars and moon! (Perfect for lunar, nocturnal, and cosmic witchcraft)

🌳a park (great for all witchcraft, very versatile)

🌊💧a beach, pond, lake or near any body of water (perfect for water, sea, and love witchcraft)

👻a cemetery (perfect for death, spirit, medium, and floral witchcraft. Just make sure it’s allowed and you’re respectful of graves)

🌲A forest (perfect for forest, tree, nature, green, earth, and hedge witchcraft, here’s some tree correspondences)

Other witchy picnic ideas:

Stones/crystals to bring- it depends a lot on location and the general theme of the picnic! But a few favorites of mine are:

rose quartz, opalite, any aura quartz, sunstone, agate, tigers eye, and selenite (especially peach selenite)

Scents- I like to focus on scents a lot during picnics. It can make the experience so much more enjoyable! Location once again plays a huge role, but you can always spray your picnic blanket with essential oils, use strongly scented herbs or flowers, use a specific perfume, or even a specific tea that smells good. Some scents I like to focus on during picnics are:

lemon, orange, grapefruit, lemongrass, strawberry, orange blossom, gardenia, rose and lavender

Bring some little spells or offerings with you! A picnic in nature is the perfect time to do a little crafting, especially love, self care, fae, peace and happiness spells. And you can correspond your picnic with the intent of the spell!

It’s also a great time for devotional offerings and any other offerings, especially fae offerings.

Put together a picnic spell- an entire picnic can be a spell! Everything from location, to drinks, to food, and the extra stuff you bring along can be in it.
