How to Write When You Don't Feel Like Yourself

There are going to be days (or weeks, or months) where you sit down to write and feel... disconnected. From your voice, from your characters, from your ideas. Like the person who used to write your stories just packed up and left.

They didn't. They're just tired. Here's how to keep writing anyway:

Lower the bar (Until it's on the floor) You are not here to write something brilliant. You are here to write something. A paragraph. A sentence. A single line of dialogue. Movement matters way more than quality.

Write around the story Don't force it. If you can't write the scene, try: ⋆ A character ramble / journal entry ⋆ A conversation that won't be included in the final draft ⋆ A list of things the character would never admit out loud ⋆ A messy summary of what should happen Engage with the story from a different angle.

Borrow a voice until yours comes back No, not with AI. Read something that feels close to what you want to write, or watch a scene that captures the tone, then write immediately after. Not to copy, to reignite your instincts.

Write the emotion, not the plot. What is your character feeling in this moment? What are they afraid of? What do they want but won't say? What's being kept from them? The emotion leads, the plot catches up later.

Stop trying to "feel like a writer" first. You don't write when you feel like a writer. You feel like a writer because you write.

You are still a writer, even on the days it feels distant. Especially then.

Tonight, I had to say my last goodbye to someone who had been on my caseload for five years in my previous role. It’s truly one of the toughest parts about the field I work in, since we’re normally responsible for keeping people alive and teaching them skills. But if we do great at the ‘alive and thriving’ part, we eventually have to navigate the death process with them. Tonight, a lot of this person’s family was there for those final moments, and we got to trade a lot of wonderful stories while waiting for the inevitable final breath. 

Since they were covered with their favorite football team’s blanket, I shared the time I was taking this person to their primary care physician on Halloween. Because it’s an important holiday, they insisted on wearing their Elvis costume, complete with wig and sideburns, to the doctor’s office. It was a cool and rainy Halloween, so they wore their favorite Kansas City Chiefs jacket over their Elvis costume and we sat in the waiting room with a silly grin plastered on his face.

Now, I’m not a football fan by any stretch, but the physician sure was. So when he saw the Elvis impersonator wearing a Kansas City Chiefs jacket in an exam room, he decided they were actually Elvis Grbac, who played for the Chiefs from ‘97-‘00. This doctor made it the best appointment possible that day (if not the best appointment I’ve ever been to). The doctor had the clinic nurses and physician assistants file in to ask for this person’s autograph (and of course they flirted Elvis-style, complete with their best lip curl when each nurse came into the room). The physician then took them on a tour of the rest of the clinic so everyone else could see the costume. When I dropped them off at their workplace two hours later, they were ready to tackle the world with the biggest grin I had ever seen.

I’m going to absolutely miss that grin.

I realized something about myself today and how I consume media. I tend to analyze any media I consume rather than reviewing it on if I liked it or not. I suppose in a way, part of if I enjoyed a piece of media involves how much I want to analyze it and find the (and often times, hidden) meaning.

I suppose this means I am the annoying person to watch a movie or tv show with. And the absolute worst to get book or movie recommendations from.
