Rex Goodman himself bothers me just a little because the way he approached the Super Mutants of Trinity Tower came from a place of arrogance. "Oh look at these big idiots with zero culture, I'll enrich their lives with Shakespeare and they'll love me!" Like come on, man. His idiocy didn't just endanger him (whatever, he knew the risks), but it also endangered Strong.

Also starting with Shakespeare was like, the worst possible move. You're going to make these guys sit through Macbeth?? Fuck's sake. Why not something goofy and easy to follow like Spamalot? I feel like they'd have liked Spamalot. Why not something like a translation of Kanadehon Chūshingura? This has been sitting in my drafts for like...three months? Four months? It feels like a long time. I don't think it's complete enough to post to Ao3, but I've had fun writing about my sad mutant girl anyways, so I'm plopping it here.

Shit, Val thought.  Her chin bumped hard against her captor's broad shoulder with each of his stomping footsteps.  Shit shit shit shit-

It had been her own fault.  Her father had told her to stay in the Vault, after all; surely he knew that something like this was bound to happen.

Maybe not exactly this, but then again, she had no way of telling how much there was about her that he knew and refused to disclose.  She'd always been...wrong...and that wrongness had gotten worse the older she became.  Everyone avoided her the larger she grew, as though there was something about her that screamed "danger."  Sure, they were POLITE about it...but she noticed, and it stung.

She wasn't even allowed to have a gun, or handle sharp objects; she had eavesdropped on her father's best friend speaking, voice low and hushed, about how she may "snap" someday, that her behavior may become unpredictable.  James had joked in turn that oh yes, of course- his sweet-tempered, always-joking little girl would soon be sucking the marrow from their bones...and Val had crawled into her cot, buried her face in her pillow, and cried herself to sleep.

Amata hadn't cared.  The one person who seemed to understand, who didn't jump when she entered a room or speak to her as though she was always on the verge of violence.

At the thought of her friend- her ONLY friend- grief flooded her mouth, bitter like bile.

She hadn't heeded her father's warning, and now Amata was never going to know what happened to her.

The hard muscle and bone of the creature that held her, flung across his shoulder, bruised her ribs.  She squirmed against the discomfort, and in return he laughed.

"You eager?  You not want to wait?"

His words ground out of him, speech slow and broken, but almost human.  

Val managed to find her voice.

"Where are you taking me?" she asked, far more meek than she would have liked.  Some little part of her, a spark in her mind that burned deep when she was angry, wanted her to growl, to thrash, to sink her teeth into the hardened skin of his throat and RIP until he would bleed, until he would drown.

Her body couldn't obey.  Terror gripped her muscles, seized her lungs.

"We almost there," the beast said, sounding pleased with himself.

Val knew enough about Super Mutants to understand.  They preferred to take prey back to the crude nests they made for themselves in ruined buildings and on cliffsides, unless the hunger for human flesh was too strong for them to wait.

Her hands were free, but what good were they?  She'd dropped her gun when the creature had grabbed her, scared shitless at how he seemed to have come out of nowhere while she was busy bathing in the river to get the Radroach guts off of her skin.

Her Vault uniform was still laying in the dirt, back where she'd been taken...not that she would need it once she was dead.

Her captor had constructed a crude abatis, a semi-circle of sharpened wood, with one entryway and a backside of craggy rock, unclimbable.  The smell of rotting meat was overwhelming, and had there been anything in her stomach, she wouldn't have been able to keep it down.

The center of his dwelling was where he took her, and threw her onto the ground.  His massive body blocked the only way out, trapping her perfectly, and all she could do was stare and shake in terror as he grabbed one of her arms, yanking her into a sitting position while he kneeled to cage her in.

He pressed his face to her chest, his teeth grazing her stomach as he pushed against her as close as he could come and huffed deep.  A pleased rumble ground deep in his throat and his tongue lolled out, dragging up the length of her entire body.

I'm food, she thought, and wanted to sob, to scream.  Amata, he's going to kill me.

His mouth closed around her side so that he could bite at her ribs...but the expected piercing of teeth didn't come.

Instead, he simply toyed with her, worrying her around in the dirt as though he was a dog, and scraping her back against pebbles and dead grass, growling as he did it.

"Pretty thing," he rumbled.  "Others say no such thing Super Mutant woman...ha!"  He grabbed her thighs in his hands, spreading her wide and nestling his face against her groin, breathing her in.  "I prove them wrong."

Several confused thoughts ripped through Val's mind, the first being that she was absolutely NOT a Super Mutant.  The next was that somehow, something had this BEAST thinking that she was, and that she was about to be used in the most degrading, violating way. 

The last was that she didn't feel well, and that the world was going dark.

The first thing that Val felt was something soft and wet rubbing against her mouth, and the scent of copper filled her nose.

She groaned and tried to wave it away, but it didn't stop until she managed to force her eyes to open, blinking in the afternoon sunlight.

There was something red crushed against her face. The remembrance of where she was settled onto her and she sat up, panic overtaking her mind.

She'd been asleep, asleep in the presence of a Super Mutant.

...But she didn't hurt. Her back stung, but that was all. No pain between her legs, no blood to indicate that anything had been done to her.

Her vision cleared as she sat and breathed, and there she saw the massive creature kneeling next to her, holding a dripping handful of raw meat.

"Woman sick," he said. "Thought so. So skinny, so small, skin so fragile. Woman not eating like she needs to."

He rubbed the gory mush against her mouth again as she sputtered and tried to shove his hand away.

"You must eat," he said. "Brahmen liver good for health, make you strong again."

"Don't shove it down my throat!" she growled, matching his gravely tone without entirely meaning to.

"Oh." The sound that came from him was surprisingly gentle. He held out his palm, offering the crushed liver with his head tipped to one side.

She eyed it with unease.

As if to soothe her distrust, the Super Mutant twisted a piece off of the palmful that he held and ate it, then licked the blood from his fingers.

"Not dangerous!" he promised. He sounded so sincere. "I hunt while you sleep. Very fresh."

Val eyed the meat again, and then slowly reached out to take a piece, unsteadily trying to rip it with her fingers. When she couldn't, the Super Mutant did it for her, chuckling.

"Ahh, woman has small hands. I will help."

He placed the bit of liver in her outstretched palm, and she stared at it for a moment, asking herself if she was actually going to go through with it, despite how her empty stomach gnawed at the back of her ribs.

In the end, hunger won.

The meat was flavored strongly of metal, and gushed fluid as she chewed, but she closed her eyes and forced herself to swallow.

Sex scene 👀

To be clear, there ARE female Super Mutants in canon. My headcanon is that they were too intelligent and too strong to be of practical use (as in, they weren't easily controlled), so the experiments in Vault 87 focused on males, and then misogyny warped the reason over time as to why human women are taken as food and not changed. It's just a headcanon. Tabitha is best girl (naturally), but she's all the way in Nevada so neither my girl nor her lover knows about her, or Lily, or Gail, or Sally.

The trouble was that he refused to leave her side any time she was awake, hunting while she slept and following her when she went to relieve herself or drink water.

The gun strapped to his back gave a clear warning: "Run, and you die."

On the brighter side, the Super Mutant hadn't made an attempt to do anything more than feed and watch her. It was as though she was a pet- something with which to occupy his time.

The diet of raw meat hadn't made her sick, surprisingly, but then again her immune system had always been atypically powerful. On more than one occasion, an illness had ripped through the Vault and left her alone untouched, and while she didn't understand why, she was thankful for it now.

Sometimes she tried to coax more than a couple of sentences out of her nine-foot-tall shadow, but it didn't work often and when it did, he mostly laughed and told her she sounded funny, like a stupid human.

So she learned to keep it short and simple.

He had found her leather armor to wear, still intact enough to cover her properly, and her skin slowly grew roughened, callused. She had always kept her hair shaved to the scalp, but over time she grew accustomed to using a pocket knife to maintain it rather than the clippers she had before.

Little things to keep her sane.

She wondered sometimes, however, if she was even a human anymore, or if her time alone in the wilderness with him had changed her into something beyond recognition.

One night, bitter cold swept in- an artic blast from the north. Having a fire burning overnight was a dangerous thing in the wasteland; it drew in beasts and ill-intentioned humans alike, and so Val lay huddled in the dark, shivering miserably.

The Super Mutant, stripped of his armor, shifted to stare at her. He slept very little, she had realized, always waiting until exhaustion had overtaken her, and awakening before she did.

It was as though his schedule was focused around being within arm's reach of her, all of the time.

She could feel his gaze on her back, burning into her with his slitted pupils, and then she heard him settle close and lay on his side. His thick arm came to wrap around her body, the other worming under her to roll her over and tuck her against his chest.

"Woman cold?" he asked. "Whatever humans did to you...made you so WEAK."

He didn't sound disappointed, but oddly mournful instead.

"I will...crush them for you. Make them scream."

He pressed his face to the top of her head, rubbing his hard cheek against her crown. His body heat was almost stifling, but her cold skin welcomed it, his warmth sinking into her bones and making her comfortable for the first time that night.

"We will eat them, make you strong again." His voice was almost a whisper. Val felt her throat tighten. "Make you strong again and make many babies."

This was insane.

"Why?" she asked, growling her words to match him. She had long discovered that he understood her better if she did. "There are other women, other stronger Super Mutant women. Not...sick. Make babies with them."

The Super Mutant shifted again, this time breathing deep and slow against her ear. She began to shiver again, but not from the cold.

"I never find any," he said. "Others never find any. Dip stupid humans in green stuff to make more Super Mutants, but human women die."

He huffed against her neck, his breath hot.

"So we eat them. Others say woman is a myth, but you..."

This time when he inhaled, Val shuddered deep, a confusing warmth bursting to life in her stomach.

"...Mmh, no mistake. Smell like us."

The boys in the Vault, especially Butch, had always called her ugly. A popular joke among them was that she would screw any of them that asked out of desperation, but the truth was that she carried a disinterest for all of them, and simply ignored their presence when she could.

The Super Mutant's hand came to cradle her head, which fit perfectly in his palm. She closed her eyes, trying to breathe slow and even.

"Pretty woman," he rumbled, and his tongue brushed the length of her throat, pressing against her fluttering pulse.

It was insanity, but perhaps the isolation had driven her insane long before she'd ever left the Vault.

"What your name?" she asked. She'd never broached the subject, assuming that Super Mutants simply didn't care about such things.

This one cared enough to keep her warm. That, surely, was SOMETHING.

He laughed, surprisingly quiet.

"Woman likes me now?" he asked. Before she could answer, he pressed his forehead to hers in a gesture of unmistakable fondness that shook her to her core. "I call self "Bear." Stories say that 'bear' was a fearsome animal before the bombs came."

"Bear solitary," Val mused. "Live alone." He hummed in agreement.

"Mmh...others annoying. Okay sometimes...but annoying." His hand wandered clumsily down her back to squeeze her ass, pushing her hips flush to him. "Woman not annoying...never greedy, never complain."

"Woman's name is Val." She moved as much as she felt was safe, trying to find a comfortable position against the hard landscape of his body. "Means nothing Easy to say is all."

"Val..." Bear rumbled. She was so hot now that she'd begun to sweat, her groin throbbing shamefully.

This was surely some kind of...abuse. Akin to bedding an animal, or someone who's been mentally ruined.

It was a pitch-black night four months later when the Brotherhood of Steel ambushed them.

Four months of learning one another, sleeping curled up in each other's arms, hunting together, sharing their food.  Val had long since stopped yearning for an escape- Bear had become her safety, her anchor.

It was a rough existence, but no one had ever said life, or love, was easy.

She didn't have the heart to tell him that she was sterile, but he never seemed disappointed that his attempts to impregnate her were fruitless; the act itself seemed to bring him enough joy to make him forget the rest, and sex appeared to take away his appetite for violence.

It was all they did, some days, experimenting with each other to see what worked best.  

The rest of the world didn't exist...until the rest of the world made itself known once again.

Val awoke to a gunshot, and when she jolted up and grabbed for her own gun, it was gone.  Her arms were yanked, bringing her to her feet, and she was examined under a bright light that was gone a second later.

"Human," she heard.  "Maybe a slave."

She struggled and growled wordlessly, but then she saw Bear as he lay on his side, his eyes wide and unseeing, his neck gushing red like a broken hose.

She screamed, she fought.  She begged for someone to save him, to not let him die, but it was, of course, too late- Bear was beyond help, already growing colorless as he lay in the soaked dirt.

It didn't matter.  Something in Val snapped, and she wriggled free to smash her fist against the face of one of her assailants.  

They took Bear from her, and the feral animal inside of her wanted to take from them in turn.

His compatriot jammed the butt of his rifle against her neck, and all went black.

When she woke up, she was in Megaton, and in Megaton, she slowly learned how to be human again.

But she never forgot Bear.
