Every time someone makes a joke about Dan and Phil having no personal space with the phrase 404 not found (like this post here, for example), I immediately think of an organization that is very dear to my heart, but about which you probably have never heard of.

As you probably know, over the last several years Russia has become increasingly less tolerant and aggressive towards the LGBTQ+ community. This is evident both in overall public opinions, and in the legislation that has been passed recently. One of these laws is the “gay propaganda law”, which basically prohibits talking to people under the age of 18 about “deviant and immoral behavior”, including homosexuality. What this means practically is that LGBTQ+ teenagers are left completely unsupported and alone. Even psychologists and educators are afraid to talk to them about identity and sexuality in fear of being fined or fired. You can imagine how horrible and isolated these children feel, especially if you consider the hostile environment around them and the general homophobic rhetoric that is being broadcasted around them. They feel lost.

Now it is time to introduce you to Elena Klimova. She is a journalist and a bisexual women, barely older than me, who started an organization called "Children 404“ - support group for LGBTQ+ children and teenagers. A place they can send their letters and receive support and advice. Her organization connects those in need with shelters or trusted psychologists, helps find lawyers and funds for people facing danger and just listens to the stories of those who no one else will listen to. She also wrote a book with stories from these kids, which made me cry for days.

The kind of abuse and grief she gets for this is unthinkable. She is being threatened daily. She has been attacked. She has been sued multiple times and fined. Multiple organizations and countries have offered her refugee status, but she stays in Russia, facing incredible danger everyday, because no one else cares about her lost children, and she needs to be there for them.

You might be asking: why am I telling you? Because these kids need to know that the world is on their side. Go to their website http://www.deti-404.com/en and write them a letter. You can also email them directly at [email protected]. You can do it in English and they will translate it for the Russian speaking children, or if you want to, you can contact me and I will gladly translate it for you. Write them that you believe them, that you see them, that THE WORLD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN THEY EXIST. It is so powerful for them when people from around the world tell them that, despite what their families, teachers, friends and government tell them, they are valid and important and seen. Support Elena, support these lost and forgotten children. Spread the word.

Jk wrote what they did but the actors had to BE them for a decade.

I see a lot of talk about how Finn is manipulating and using Sean by kissing him, and while everyone has different interpretations of characters in fiction, that’s not how I saw it at all. Throughout the episode, it’s pretty clear that Finn has a genuine, vested interest in Sean. All the playful flirting that sounds like “haha just playin’ bro, but if you’re down for this, I’m down,” how he’s willing to stand up for Sean and Daniel when Daniel sneaks into Merrill’s, how he’s willing to take the blame for the ashtray, and so on. I think it’s pretty clear that at his core, Finn is a decent person who is actually friends with (and totally crushing on) Sean.

All that said, the fact that you can only kiss him if you agree to go along with his plan does make things look shady, and I can certainly see why people would think this is Finn manipulating Sean because of it. But to me, I’m willing to chalk that up to bad writing and homophobia. Like, don’t get me wrong, I’m ecstatic that Sean is bi and can actually kiss another guy in this game, but there’s a reason why you can only get that result by making a certain choice, when the game is damn near forcing Cassidy on Sean nearly every step of the way. Like, it’s even possible to kiss her if you agree to do Finn’s plan but lie about it at the lake to her, which, to me, feels a lot more scummy than Finn kissing Sean. And let’s not forget that this is also the same studio that made it possible to kiss Chloe at the end of the first season only if you sacrifice her. In a better world, we would have had gotten more time with Finn and we’d have the option to kiss him even if we don’t go with the plan, but, unfortunately, the game is still written by straight men. Which, oddly enough, does make me appreciate that they at least gave us a full kiss, complete with thigh-grabbing action. They could have easily no-homo’d the situation, played Finn’s flirts off as jokes, but they didn’t, and I’m grateful for that. I just wish they could have given us a bit more.

For an in-universe explanation, I can see Finn wanting to kiss Sean there as a moment of him thinking, “This cute guy is really cool AND he wants to do this plan with me? I gotta kiss him now,” rather than something like, “Hmm, if I kiss Sean now, it’ll definitely make him do this with me.” Because Finn does seem like a genuinely good guy to me, even if he does want to steal from drug dealers. The Life is Strange series has always made a big effort to portray characters as imperfect, flawed, morally gray, and I think Finn being a good guy who gets too hung up on a dumb scheme is one of those moments. Finn said he felt a strong connection to Sean, and I think Sean agreeing to do the plan just made it stronger, that’s all.
