I’ve had a bad relationship with an alter because of a lot of reasons, but we decided to give them time to do something they wanted to do and I’m glad I did. They seem happy. I don’t know how much this will fix or how long it will last but hey, progress

I have a friend who is convinced that I'm autistic. I wouldn't care if I was. I have Diet Autism™ (ADHD) anyway, so it wouldn't be much of a leap.

But I'm not. So it bothers me when they insist. I get it, their field is autism in young kids. Maybe they are just seeing things where things don't exist.

Anyway, I was talking to my therapist about this because it was causing me to reevaluate everything I do. She snorted and told me "no you aren't, but I can tell you why they think you are."

See, my therapist specializes in autism. She also specializes in trauma and PTSD. I wanted to share with you what she told me, maybe it'll help someone out there.

First, ADHD and autism have several overlapping symptoms. Executive dysfunction and sensory issues are the only two I can think of right now, but she said something like "if autism and ADHD were a ven diagram, the central area would be about two thirds of each circle."

Second, if you have ADHD and a trauma disorder like PTSD, it can present stunningly like autism. Most people, like myself, who were diagnosed ADHD in adulthood have some sort of trauma. That trauma comes with learned behaviors that kept people safe/helped them cope while they were young. These behaviors look a lot like autistic symptoms. Difficulty making eye contact in high stress situations is one of the behaviors I learned in childhood. Making eye contact while I perceive I'm "in trouble" is so uncomfortable that it makes me meltdown. Awkwardness in social situations is another one that happens to me.

I guess all this to say, you may not have autism, you may have a combination of ADHD/PTSD. Each required its own kind of care, and I think it's important to work with your providers (if you have them) to figure out which care you need.

Also I thought it was neat.
