I appreciate that most of Doffy's complicated feelings around Rosinante and Law can be pretty thoroughly encompassed by his pattern of getting wildly pissed off and doing a bunch of impulsive violence, then several minutes later going "ok, I've taken a breath, I'm calm now, maybe I don't have to kill one of the few people I don't want to kill." And then repeat. Unfortunately both Rosi and Law are really good at intentionally triggering the explosive rage, and Doffy is always primed to do maximum damage both physical and psychological at the shortest possible notice, so it's really just a vicious cycle.

On Minion Island he goes from "my brother has betrayed me and I'm going to massacre these fucking pirates about it" to "ok, sit down, frown at the trauma gun, I don't think I want to shoot Rosi" to unloading his pistol into Rosi's chest after getting two decades of simmering sibling anger dropped in his face in like 2 minutes.

And Dressrosa is spinning this like a fucking merry go round 🤣 Law kills Vergo and blackmails him? Die G-5 for being here when Doffy shows up. Chasing Law through Green Bit? Mostly back to errant child attitude. Law very intentionally spitting D lore he could only have learned from Corazon? Fling him through town and fucking shoot him point blank in front of his allies. Then calm down, chain him to a chair, and go back to chatting. Strawhats fuck up Dressrosa and free the toys? Throw all of them out, drop a birdcage, and put a fucking bounty on Law's helpless ass. Wait, no, calm again, maybe he's handicapped Law too much and should at least let him out of the cuffs. Oh hell no Law you are choosing this fucking idiot well HE CAN GET THE CUFFS OFF THEN. Calm again. Law gets him punched in the stomach. Violent again!

And of course when you kill or grievously harm in a fit of explosive rage (that may or may not be related to your childhood trauma) you must have meant to do that so the only real option is to double down forever 🫡 Facts!

Doffy is for the most part a cold, calculated mastermind, whose every intention is hidden behind a smile and glasses. Because of this, when his composure does break, he is so utterly out of his depth that he flails and (in order to hide his inexperience and also just because he’s pissed) overreacts.

I think that emotions and unpredictability are two of the things that scare him most in the world, because they are one of the few things left that he can’t (and never can) control. That powerlessness, and sense of helplessness takes him back to his childhood. And what happened back than when he was helpless? He reacted violently, and explosively.

Listen, I love Rosinante. I love this guy a lot. I have a whole little shrine to him on my desk. But you’ve gotta admit, he’s a little ugly. I know! I know! I’m sorry! But he’s a little ugly, and that’s okay.

Loving him means accepting that sometimes he looks like a beautiful angel, and sometimes he looks like he just chiseled his way out of the town jail’s drunk tank using a spork. It hurts, but it’s true. 😔

I've been thinking about corazón and how much him and doflamingo complement (and oppose!) eachother

they both see themselves in law in a way, they both obsess over the tragedy of this little kid and how much he suffered. they both want to heal him, but for different reasons

what doflamingo sees in law is a mirror to his own philosophy: "I've suffered so others must suffer" and doflamingo craves that connection but also power and control, he knows damn well that the people that suffered the most are the easiest to manipulate, funnily enough his plans for law are a direct parallel to what trebol did to him, to give him the means of destruction he needs to exteriorize his anger and make him believe that hatred and violence is just the natural response to what he's been through

what corazón sees in law is the capacity of mercy, he sees that law is able to hold the gun yet still not shoot, even if he hates him. then what moves him on his journey to save law is this deep pity for him. i kinda like to interpret it as coming from projection too, rosinante has suffered just as much as doflamingo, yet his response to this trauma is not to inflict suffering on others but to offer love to those in the same situation as him, you can define his philosophy as "I've suffered so I must stop others from suffering" a complete opposite to doffy's

he also does not shoot his brother in their final confrontation, it's very important to me that he couldn't shoot his brother but doflamingo does shoot him, that's just another case of rosinante choosing mercy, love, sacrifice and doflamingo choosing violence, hatred, selfishness. they're constantly placed as opposites by the narrative!!

there's also the religious reading of their dynamic, if you see it through this lense corazón becomes the savior and doflamingo the temptation, and it's not even just the main themes they're literally opposing forces in every single way; violence and protection, hatred and love, control and freedom, expression and suppression, humility and egocentrism, i could go all day

Doomed siblings have me on a chokehold in a way no trope can ever achieve. Something so gut wrenchingly beautiful about two kids going through unimaginable trauma and coming out damaged forever. I always eat it up. Maybe they stay together and find solace only in each other, used and kicked out by society! Maybe they end up on opposite sides of the war! Maybe they end up betraying one another! Maybe one of them dies haunting the narrative forever! Maybe one of them destroys the world for the other! So many endless tragic possibilities!

a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... At the same time though you have a little Saul Goodman in your ear going "your honor in their defense: who cares like omfgggg who caresssssss like come onnnnnn"

We got a whole ass god revealed last chapter and we basically know what Dragon's devil fruit is going to be and all I'm thinking about is "Oh, celestial dragons are deathly afraid of rain? Juicy characterization for baby Rosinante and Doflamingo! Yet more implied trauma to add to the list!" Like I am not well about these two Dressrosa is a decade old.

The Donquixote brothers huddled together in an old shack, terrified as a storm blows rotted panels of wood away. Both of them desperately telling themselves that their faces are wet from tears and not rain. Their abject horror at realizing that to survive they must rely on the rain water to drink. Baby Doffy forcing himself and his brother to drink stagnant pond water that even the animals avoid rather than bring the storm water into their very bodies. The brothers watching, helpless, as thunder shakes the earth like the bellowing of an enraged giant. The shallow grave they dug for their mother being unearthed during a storm, and returning the next day to a muddy hollow in the earth with no body in sight. Or- or- or! Even better! Finding a tangle of muddy, blonde hair beneath the bank of a river, and staring, paralyzed, before Doflamingo lunges forward, raking his hands through the mud to dig her up so desperately that his nails peel back. Rosinante pulling him back with all of his fading strength, begging him to let themselves keep this one precious moment of ignorance. Ignore the body. Ignore the storms. Pretend that nothing has happened, because seeing their mother’s worm eaten face will bring them nothing but pain. Oughhh. So many options!!!
