“Don’t try to find a reason for somebody’s love”
I appreciate that most of Doffy's complicated feelings around Rosinante and Law can be pretty thoroughly encompassed by his pattern of getting wildly pissed off and doing a bunch of impulsive violence, then several minutes later going "ok, I've taken a breath, I'm calm now, maybe I don't have to kill one of the few people I don't want to kill." And then repeat. Unfortunately both Rosi and Law are really good at intentionally triggering the explosive rage, and Doffy is always primed to do maximum damage both physical and psychological at the shortest possible notice, so it's really just a vicious cycle.
On Minion Island he goes from "my brother has betrayed me and I'm going to massacre these fucking pirates about it" to "ok, sit down, frown at the trauma gun, I don't think I want to shoot Rosi" to unloading his pistol into Rosi's chest after getting two decades of simmering sibling anger dropped in his face in like 2 minutes.
And Dressrosa is spinning this like a fucking merry go round 🤣 Law kills Vergo and blackmails him? Die G-5 for being here when Doffy shows up. Chasing Law through Green Bit? Mostly back to errant child attitude. Law very intentionally spitting D lore he could only have learned from Corazon? Fling him through town and fucking shoot him point blank in front of his allies. Then calm down, chain him to a chair, and go back to chatting. Strawhats fuck up Dressrosa and free the toys? Throw all of them out, drop a birdcage, and put a fucking bounty on Law's helpless ass. Wait, no, calm again, maybe he's handicapped Law too much and should at least let him out of the cuffs. Oh hell no Law you are choosing this fucking idiot well HE CAN GET THE CUFFS OFF THEN. Calm again. Law gets him punched in the stomach. Violent again!
And of course when you kill or grievously harm in a fit of explosive rage (that may or may not be related to your childhood trauma) you must have meant to do that so the only real option is to double down forever 🫡 Facts!
Donquixote Bros Doodle Dump!
More specifically doodles for the Donswap!AU I've been rotating in my brain for a while! Essentially the AU diverges once around the point Doffy comes back from Mariejois and finds his brother gone; without going into to much detail Doffy ends up seperated from Trebol and friends and get thrown into the CP9 child soldier program, while Rosi gets picked up by Trebol (and friends) and becomes the head of the Donquixote Pirates/Joker...
I'm still fleshing the designs and the AU out so expect more posts about this two! I already know I want to take Rosi's design in a slightly different direction from what I've got here and I have a lot of ideas for Corazon!Doffy ^_^
Baby 5
I am SO fond of Baby 5 and she deserved better!!! Specifically, I think that instead of running off to marry some random guy, she should have left with Law and joined the Heart Pirates!
I need to finish Dressrosa to figure out the hows, but it would have been so good for her! She deserves to bully her younger/older brother (depending on which one you ask lol), plus everyone else she's close to got arrested :////
Let Baby 5 stay relevant! And also stop trying to marry random men!!!
Donquixote Homing proves to me that Celestial Dragons simply do not conceptualize that they can be harmed. Like that's a fundamental part of their worldview in the same way the sky is blue. Not that people wouldn't dare harm them - it's much deeper than that. Just straight up it's not an option they have ever thought about from birth through adulthood and this is a big part of what's wrong with them. They don't think they are immune from consequences. They think consequences beyond, like, embarrassment or getting yelled at or being denied something do not exist, and they are immune from those things that do. Which is an important distinction when it comes to actions like setting sail for fishman island and threatening your ex slaves while injured and alone where they could quite easily cover up your murder, or moving down to live with the humans in a big fancy house and not even slightly hiding your identity despite having willingly surrendered the political status that made you untouchable.
This is also why Doffy, as furious as it would make him to admit this, has not been a Celestial Dragon in mindset since he was 8 and realized they could bleed, and this does actually make him a better person than your average Celestial (genuinely, yikes). Because someone who understands that people can and will fight back is kind of inherently seeing them more as people than worms (or whatever his bitter insult of the day is).
This feels like a direct response to the people who were upset about how Ace didn't run away during Marineford. While Ace was rage-baited by Akainu, in the end his main priority was his brother.
Just like his dad
In One Piece, pride is something that is treated positively--to a certain extent. But more important is protecting and caring for your friends. I think this balance is actually best seen with Zoro. Just compare his fight with Mihawk to the end of Thriller Bark. Both are treated as value positive by the narrative, but I'd argue that "Nothing happened" is more impactful.
Can’t have a favorite character without drawing some trauma
oda really put his whole pussy into writing dressrosa because he grabbed brothers from different sides of the war, nature vs nurture, dark found family and revenge quest tropes, put them all in a blender and said yeah this is just law's backstory, let me keep writing,
then introduced a whole new race, a whole new admiral, a whole new brother for luffy, a whole new luffy transformation; he made callbacks to skypeia, he gave the strawhats an unofficial fleet, usopp unlocks observation haki, the revolutionaries are here for some fucking reason, WHY THE FUCK IS BURGESS HERE, USOPP IS GOD, AND I'M PROBABLY FORGETTING SO MUCH MORE BUT
THIS ALL HAPPENS IN THE SPAN OF 24 HOURS ? ! it's ridiculous
attackdog puppyplay where I rip your enemies to bloody pieces and then lay my head in your lap to hear ‘attaboy’ and feel fingers in my sweaty, bloody hair
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?”

dellinger's character design is so cool for being such a minor character, he's a fuckass half gyojin sadistic annoying little shit who'll kick your ass in HIGH HEELS, it's brilliant, i adore him
the fact that he dresses like that because giolla raised him, the implication that doflamingo inherited his horrible terrible fashion sense from giolla too
this information is just too much for me to bear, I'm going to implode
they're mama's boys, of course they are </3

I dont like it when people write Law alinging with Luffy as him looking for a crew to use and dispose of easily for the sake of taking down Doflamingo. For starters, he orginally went into the take down Mingo plan trying to do the entire thing on his own, Luffy was a happy accident to his suicidal plans. And furthermore, the literal moment that he doubted if they were all going to make it out of the plan alive he sent some of the weaker members (with Sanji to protect them) on ahead to Zou, and then turned around and immediately tried to back out of the alliance with Luffy so that Luffy and the rest of the crew would leave too and Law would be the only one to die for his revenge.
He never wanted anyone else to die for the sake of his vengeance, not his own crew and not another crew either. And because of that he could never genuinely see the Straw Hats as "disposable" in the callous way some people write it where he doesnt care if they live or die. Its the whole reason why his original plan to take down Doflamingo was built on having Kiado do it for him, because even if Doflamingo killed him once he realized what was going on, any allies or crewmates of Law's at the time would not be caught in the crossfire if he could help it.
Disposable doesn't look like that. If anything, he was treating himself as the disposable one
