Transgender people make up roughly 1% of the total population, so we’re a small minority. And yet, some people would have you believe that our mere presence in the public sphere poses a threat to women everywhere.

Disproportionate visibility

According to the sources I’ve found, the adult trans population is fairly evenly divided between trans women and trans men. Some research suggests each of these groups is smaller than that of other gender-nonconforming people, while other sources estimate each at about one-third. And yet, judging by media coverage, political discourse, and social media visibility, one might be led to believe that trans women make up the vast majority.

For a very long time, transmasculine representation has been woefully lacking. Only in recent years have I started noticing a rise in online and on-screen presence of trans men, and even now, they remain a minority. For example, of the top 10 gender-diverse influencers on Instagram, two are male, two are non-binary, and six are female. Only one of the eight gender-diverse influencers with over a million followers is a trans man.

The lack of visibility and representation in the past largely contributed to how long it took me to understand my own identity, as I transitioned at age 50. It’s really hard to figure out who you are when you never see others like you. It’s getting better, but even now I find that many people still don’t realise that a trans person can be someone who was assigned female at birth and now lives as a man — the common assumption when I come out as trans to new people is that I’m “biologically male” and transitioning to female.

i saw a really disturbing account of a trans girl whos in high school who calls herself a "neverpassing ogrehon," and has her body measurements?? or smth in her pinned post to "prove" that she'll never pass. and theres a picture of her on her account and she just looks like a normal teenage girl. and its disturbing and even if she didnt "pass" it would still be disturbing. it just reminds me of my insecurity and body image issues with being a trans teen and even the insecurities and body image issues of cis teenage girls when i was a kid. its just sad. anyway, being a teenager is hard. being a trans teenager is even harder. trans teens, give yourself time to grow. give yourself time to feel comfortable in your body. i dont know a single person who was comfortable with their body as a teenager. youre not alone. your teen years are not the time to get all doomerist
