Modern necromancer’s lair
((whats up it took me five months to remember my password))
do you feel like you could fall apart at any moment?
“That’s... not something I care to discuss with strangers. Especially not ones hiding in bushes. How about you come out from there?”
mustbesotired:
Though squinting in suspicion, he appears unfocused. Claus offers a momentary pause of thought before snorting. “So, are you dead? Is that how you know if feels different?” it’s a clipped response, blunt. He certainly couldn’t tell himself, but it wasn’t as if he’d given it much thought before now. It’s usually against his nature to consider, but maybe she knows more than he does. Again, he’s ruminating what the stranger has to say when the topic changes. Something about it is alluring and nostalgic, causing an almost painful sensation in how much he wants to learn more. Fingers curl tightly at the bottom of his hoodie, tugging it down anxiously. An excuse for mischief that he can get away with?!
“Black magic? Carving pumpkins? I can do those things?”
“Ah... No. I don’t think I’ve died lately.” Clarissa is fairly certain the kid is being sarcastic, but the fact that he had to ask unsettles her and brings back all her old, paranoid habits. She puts two fingers underneath her jaw. A moment passes. “...Mmm. Still got a pulse. But we’re getting off topic.”
She’s not sure how to feel about his sudden enthusiasm. On one hand, it’s a nice change from his previous glum demeanour. On the other hand, they were talking about the dark arts. Her face settles into something halfway between amusement and concern.
“Ahahaha... Maybe not the voodoo part. People here have enough to worry about without adding candy-coated curses to the list. But everything else? Sure.”
“People usually wear costumes, too, but I don’t think this place has a costume store. I suppose I could always try that recipe for fake blood out...”
“Halloween…a celebration for the dead? Then is everyone here dead?” the concept was baffling. Why would you be excited about being dead?
He shoves some candy into his mouth; it’s the only acceptable part of this “holiday”.
“What? No, no. Who told you that?” Clarissa had always thought the holiday was a little weird, but the kid’s interpretation was more morbid than she’d been expecting. “And we’re not dead. Dead feels different.”
“Halloween is about making bad stuff fun. You know. Skeletons. Chainsaws. Black magic. Toilet paper. Pumpkins carved with weird faces...”
“Aaaaugh.” Clarissa spluttered as she pulled herself out of the water. “Jesusbloodychrist that’s cold.”
She still didn’t know how she'd wound up going over the edge. One moment, she was assessing the side for hand-holds, and the next she was falling. Had somebody pushed her? That was awfully rude of them. She wasn't going to run. She'd just needed a few extra moments. That's all.
Clarissa got up. She paused to squeeze the water out of her coat, and to listen in on the grumbling of the other unfortunate Persona-users.
"...got to be shitting me..." "...my entire body hurts..." "...humidity is gonna ruin my hair..."
She snorted. Well, at least she wasn't the only one having a bad time. Clarissa stood, and was just about to venture further into the cave when she heard an uncomfortably familiar voice.
"...didn't really do it, did she?"
Clarissa snapped her head towards the trees that lined the side of the cavern. Who's voice was that? It wasn't-- no. He wasn't here, was he?
"Dude, why're you so surprised?" Another voice. It sounded bored. "Like, when you look at the facts, it's pretty obvious." "I... I guess. Maybe I just didn't want to believe it..." "Yeah, well. That was dumb." "You're right... you're right..."
Clarissa turned away. At a glance, it didn't seem like anybody else had heard the whispering coming from the trees. Not yet. Maybe she could sort this out before anyone noticed...
DUNGEON I
THE TRIAL OF PHOBOS
Those who make the plunge, whether by choice or by force, will find that it’s a long way down that sinkhole.
The feeling of falling persists for just long enough to induce panic, the eyes of Shadows gleaming from beneath their masks as they rush by…
Those who fell come to in an immediately and vastly different set of surroundings.
Most had their fall broken by dense foliage; the less fortunate might find themselves having landed in deep, dark water, needing to swim a small ways to find their footing on solid ground.
The air is notably warmer and more humid than it had been in town. Everywhere you look, lush jungle plants can be seen growing, layered wild and tangled–not a spot of snow in sight. Looking up, one can see the entrance of the sinkhole far above. Clouded by Shadows, it almost looks like an eclipse.

“...What the hell,” Clarissa muttered, to nobody in particular. “I know Avery said we’d be fighting shadows, but I thought we were supposed to find them. Not the other way around.”
An entire city block was just gone. Clarissa tried to remember what used to be there. Shops? Lodge cabins? Maybe it was a good thing she hadn’t moved out of the main building. But then again, what was to stop the same thing from happening directly underneath her room?
She took a deep breath, and tried to pull herself together. “Doesn’t matter. Done this before a million times...”
INCIDENT I
THE SINKHOLE
Days after the initial tremors occurred in Idle Lakes, talk surrounding the occurrence had begun to quiet down. No one had felt anything major since–let alone heard any suspicious sounds. A healthy sense of caution remained strong among many, though others argued that the initial rumors were merely attention-seeking witnesses telling tall tales.
As it would happen, in one week’s time…
A massive rumble in the early hours of the morning was the cue for the crumbling of stone and snapping of wood, soon followed by hand-crank sirens breaking any remaining semblance of silence in the town.
News spread quickly. On the outer edge of the East District, in the place where the earthquake had been previously felt, a large chunk of land had abruptly collapsed in upon itself, revealing an enormous sinkhole.
Demons employed as rangers, peacekeepers and guards quickly flocked near the site of the hole, attempting to muscle reporters and other rubberneckers away from the main area. For a short while, aside from the initial event and the commotion of the crowd that congregated, all seemed calm.
But soon came the snarling.

“Melbourne, huh…? I can’t really say I’ve heard a lot about that, but I think I get the idea. It’s probably the kind of thing that happens in places where you don’t get earthquakes much, so I can’t blame them too much.”
“I dunno about that either…there’s at least a few things about this place that I don’t really understand. Maybe they just didn’t really have much room to build it anywhere else, wherever this place is? Japan’s kind of like that. Landmass-wise, it’s not actually all that big, relatively speaking.”
“Half the people I’ve run into here aren’t even from Earth. I wouldn’t be surprised if one told me they didn’t know what an earthquake was. ...Bloody hell, I don’t want to think about what atrocious meteorological phenomenon other dimensions have. Sharknados had better not be real.”
“Anyway. Maybe the Veil really does cover everything else. Can’t imagine a snowstorm filled with monsters would be good for land development.”
“Yeah, it just seems weird that everyone’s whispering about them…do they just not get them very often here? Where I’m from, it happens all the time, so unless it’s a really bad one then it’s not really a big deal. And…I’m not really sure why they’d put us anywhere near volcanoes that were liable to explode. Not unless those, uh…’Shadow’ things lived there and…I dunno. I can buy that they’re a big threat to everything and all, but living inside a dormant volcano on top of that just sounds a bit too much. Like, next you’d be seeing them tie someone to the railroad tracks and cheat in races even though they’re winning perfectly fine on their own, or something like that.”
“You think people are overreacting? You should’ve seen Melbourne after its big earthquake in 2012. Those knocked-over deck chairs really caused pandemonium.”
“You’re probably right, though. Building a lodge next to a secret evildoer volcano lair would be a terrible idea. ...Then again, choosing to build a lodge on a fault line isn’t great, either. I wonder why they did that.”
“I’m really not sure what all the fuss is about…it’s just an earthquake, isn’t it?”
“Probably.”
“...Those mountains are just mountains, right? Not dormant volcanoes? Because I did not sign up for that.”
Flaws: 12. What’s the worst thing they’ve done out of pure malice or hatred?
This one stumped me, ‘cause my kneejerk reaction was to talk about the time she stabbed a man to death for killing her boss and ruining her life, and then tried to frame it on a person she’d known for all of three days. But that’s part of a very different canon to PC, and I kinda haven’t written enough of her story to know what the worst thing she’s ever done is.
At this point in her character development, it’s probably just cutting people out of her life completely with no warning. Or maybe she’s revoked a few Video Nine membership cards out of petty spite. I dunno.
14-16 for chara flaw meme!
14. What crimes or bad deeds has your character committed?
HOO BOY.
Clarissa has taken bribes, blackmailed people, threatened OHS&C workers, lied to the police, driven under the influence, helped hide a body, torrented movies, committed assault, forged documents... Yet she’s never scammed her customers. The suggestion alone would offend her.
15. What are some of their worst habits?
Clarissa tends to look for the worst in people so she can justify keeping them out of her life. She tries to handle everything by herself, which lands her in unnecessary amounts of trouble.
Also she only washes her clothes when they get visibly stained. Back home, it was because she had no running water and no time to go to a laundromat. Here, she has no excuse. Ech.
16. What’s the most selfish thing they’ve ever done?
Y’know... Despite everything I listed above, nothing particularly heinous stands out.
I guess there’s the time she kicked her roommate out of their apartment under the pretence of “needing to study”, when in reality she just wanted to bum around and watch TV.
character flaws
All characters have flaws, it’s part of what makes them interesting and relatable. But exploring those flaws can sometimes be tricky, especially when the character is supposed to be a hero. I made this little questionnaire to help me explore some flaws in my own characters. Feel free to use it if you think you’ll find it helpful!
Most of the questions should have some kind of answer, no matter whether it’s as horrible as “they murdered five thousand people in cold blood” or as tiny as “they forgot to return a library book that one time.”
Fill out all the answers or do it as an ask meme, whichever you prefer! (Please, remember to use trigger warnings for the more violent or upsetting stuff.)
What makes your character angry or upset?
What makes your character lose their patience with someone else?
What do they do when they get angry, hurt, or upset, and snap?
When has their curiosity or thoughtlessness lead them to intruding over another’s boundries?
When trying to relate to other people, what does your character find difficult to understand?
Does your character have any prejudices?
When have they totally failed to think of another person’s needs?
What’s the most inappropriate thing they’ve ever done (whether by accident or deliberately) and why?
When have they put their own goals above the safety, happiness, or general wellbeing of others?
Who have they hurt, and how/why? Were they sorry for what they did?
What’s the worst thing they’ve done out of frustration or a bad temper?
What’s the worst thing they’ve done out of pure malice or hatred?
Regardless of whether they would actually act on it… what type of angry, violent, disturbing or vengeful thoughts does your character have?
What crimes or bad deeds has your character committed?
What are some of their worst habits?
What’s the most selfish thing they’ve ever done?
What lies or dishonest/misleading comments have they told? (Including “white lies” to spare someone’s feelings.) Have they ever withheld the truth?
What’s the most violent thing they ever did?
What might tempt them to go against their own moral code?
What do they feel sorry for? What do they regret the most?
What’s the stupidest mistake they ever made?
Why did they split up with their last romantic partner (if applicable)
What made them end a friendship? (if applicable)
What’s the worst thing they’ve said or done to a family member? and finally…
What are they doing, if anything, to make themselves a better person?
