last rant. my dad has been making some pretty unfortunate comments/jokes/etc about trans people lately, and while that sucks and is gross, it’s freaking me out. I know that obsession with politics, particularly politics rooted in hate, can cause illogical/obsessive/inappropriate behavior, but he’s a) never been so obsessed with a political issue (bringing it up daily, inserting it into random conversations with no preamble) before, and b) he is acting so fucking weird. indescribably weird. like, the jokes he’s making are childish, but not childish as in unrefined/careless/immature. childless as in incoherent. childish in a way where I’m genuinely worried about his thought process. at this point I’ve transcended my initial annoyance/discomfort because what the fuck, do I need to ask my mom about whether he’s been to the doctor lately?? why does he sometimes appear to lose access to his adult cognitive abilities, and not in a sarcastic “bigots are stupid” way, but in a genuine “possible health problem” way?? what is going on??

it’s weird, because he had me (far too) late in life, so I’ve known for a while that I’ll have to see him “decline” while I’m still young, but knowing conceptually is a very different thing to watching your father fail to string a sentence together while attempting to be bigoted. a strange experience stemming from a strange guy, honestly

#I seriously wish I could record some of these comments he’s making because they just. fail to be offensive because they’re that incoherent #like I know he’s /trying/ to be rude but it doesn’t come through as much because the words he’s saying just do not make sense in any contex #I love my mom and I think she’s generally a great person/parent but sometimes I’m so fucking frustrated at her for having a kid #with this man. like obviously he’s not all bad but what kind of an idiot do you have to be to procreate with a guy in his 50s who has #emotional issues. you are a normal woman with a successful career and a loving family and a seemingly strong sense of self-worth.#how do you end up with this glaring blind-spot #at least I have a therapy appointment tomorrow because I need professional advice on how to approach this lol #like I don’t really think I can say to my mom ‘hey have you noticed how dad’s being a huge bigot? well I have too and I’m real nervous abou #it because it seems like underneath all that is Genuine Mental Problems. because he is an elderly man. which is a bit awkward because you #are regular middle-aged and generally quite accepting. so what the hell is going on mother?’ 🫠#unfortunate things

very sick of certain people Commenting On The United States. or rather certain people Commenting On Americans. I get that being people in the world means that comments will always exist, especially on the internet, but god we have enough problems on our plate without daniel from seville, who spent a week in LA with his parents when he was fourteen, giving his opinion on the american mindset and american culture and american politics. daniel you are not a geopolitical expert. daniel please sit down.

and as a corollary I’m very sick of self-loathing(?) americans rushing to venerate the opinions of the daniels of the internet. I am so endlessly frustrated with them for making me feel like a far-right Patriot(tm) for being like, hey, actually, we do have issues, you don’t need to praise western europeans/canadians/etc for making up new ones so they can feel superior, and in fact, as people who don’t live here and aren’t familiar with the culture/political system/etc they should probably not be opining on The General Problem With America(ns), just as I don’t opine on The General Problem With Italians/Swedes/The Spanish (even though I’m sure those places have their own issues) because I am not super familiar with those cultures/states. why is this so complicated!!

#I think I might need to take a break from tumblr because people here (like many people across the political spectrum)#not only speak as though their personal opinions represent The Truth Of The Universe but also as though everyone secretly believes in them #or that’s not quite it #I’m having trouble articulating this sentiment but I think my next comment illustrates it somewhat well:#I saw that demographics poll post that was going around and it was such a relief to see that the vast majority of the (tens of thousands #) of respondents were white western female atheists in their 20s-30s. like wow. very strange thing to be relieved about #but it was nice to have solid indication that everything I resent about this website’s attitude/prevailing political beliefs/etc #is not representative of the entire world and in fact not even representative of the entire population of that specific demographic #which like. yes captain obvious but I think common tumblr narratives can get very overwhelming between the purity testing and the #noble-savaging and the contrarianism and the superiority complexes and the pissing on the poor #and I don’t know why tumblr in particular is so bad for it when—again—there are plenty of political attitudes/groups #—some of whom I agree with and some of whom I disagree with—that have these issues #but somehow—for me anyway—tumblr is so much worse with it #in terms of the insufferableness of it all #so yeah uh. in addition to people chilling out on the This Place Is So Evil shtick a break from tumblr might do me some good :)#unfortunate things

What I think a lot of people don't grasp is that much of the Jewish community, perhaps even the vast majority, would rather it be democrats who support Israel. However, on account of us *not* controlling the government, we are stuck with most of our support coming from the questionably motivated GOP. We aren't like, happy about this.
