I am genuinely baffled and disturbed by the fact that some people regularly don’t have breakfast. I love breakfast. I will forgo a lot of things in my morning before I’ll give up my breakfast.

Flicking through pictures I took in 2013 while listening to the Mirrors Edge soundtrack can make taut, fragile little vortices in my mind.

I often wondered why I took them, at the time, but in the end I’m glad I took every single one of them, even if a lot of them could be better. I realise that creating art and documentation out of my day to day life provides a certain permanence and consistency which I don’t otherwise have. I intend to continue and improve.

I honestly don’t understand why there aren’t more people who, when given the platform to discuss minimum wage, don’t simply distill it to the simplest of facts:

A forty hour work week is considered full time.

It’s considered as such because it takes up the amount of time we as a society have agreed should be considered the maximum work schedule required of an employee. (this, of course, does not always bear out practically, but just follow me here)

A person working the maximum amount of time required should earn enough for that labor to be able to survive. Phrased this way, I doubt even most conservatives could effectively argue against it, and out of the mouth of someone verbally deft enough to dance around the pathos-based jabs conservative pundits like to use to avoid actually debating, it could actually get opps thinking.

Therefore, if an employee is being paid less than [number of dollars needed for the post-tax total to pay for the basic necessities in a given area divided by forty] per hour, they are being ripped off and essentially having their labor, productivity, and profit generation value stolen by their employer.

Wages are a business expense, and if a company cannot afford to pay for its labor, it is by definition a failing business. A company stealing labor to stay afloat (without even touching those that do so simply to increase profit margins and/or management/executive pay/bonuses) is no more ethical than a failing construction company breaking into a lumber yard and stealing wood.

Our goal as a society should be to protect each other, especially those that most need protection, not to subsidize failing businesses whose owners could quite well subsidize them on their own.

I don’t really see why this is something to be laughed at. He has him in a decent armbar. He uses it to throw him off balance before using a whole body movement to yank the arm down and in while simultaneously pushing from the other end of the lever with his back and shoulder, and thus his opponents upper body pitches violently forwards. He has leverage and strength on his side to topple his opponent. We also can’t see his footwork but it looks like he could be tripping him at the key point.

The guy being demonstrated on does seem to be falling into it, and he could have probably avoided flipping, so why did he? For effect? Maybe partially, though I feel that’s okay because this is a demo and so you’re actually playing it safe, holding back and working together, but also because at that point rolling and gaining your feet is cleaner and safer than going sprawling across the floor and letting your hands/knees/face take the impact.

No doubt it could be improved upon, but it’s the kind of practical technique I don’t feel is at all out of place in a martial arts demo. On the other hand it shouldn’t really be a surprise that a martial arts demo is slower, messier and safer than the stuff you would see in tightly choreographed action films.
