Tarquin glanced over at the old Inquisitor, letting his gaze linger on the man's very plain hairstyle; the sort that half the men in Minrathous probably thought made them look respectable. He kept his eyes there a moment longer before trailing them down to the man's attire, which was… not very Tevene. Not Minrathous either.

Also, he was the fucking Inquisitor.

Even though, back during the Inquisition, Tevinter acted like they didn't give a flying fuck about the troubles of the south, Tarquin wasn't stupid. A man who could amass an army that size, take on whatever nightmare was happening down there, and live to tell the tale? Yeah, he knew the Inquisitor's face.

"Yeah, definitely the fucking hair," he said dryly, the corner of his mouth twitching upward. "Nothing else about you really stands out. Might need a haircut to blend in better."

Tarquin was about to brush it off as just a scratch... a rather large, deep scratch, but he knew too well the danger each lost drop of blood posed when facing the Venatori. One drop was all a powerful mage needed to control him.

His mouth hung open, a protest ready on his lips, when the realisation hit him and he glanced back over his shoulder. He'd possibly left blood behind at the scene of the fight.

"Shit…"

He exhaled sharply and leaned into Ashur's hold, the adrenaline beginning to fade into a dull, throbbing ache. He knew he'd need medical attention soon, just not yet. Not while they were still exposed.

"Well, it's always pissing down here," he muttered, voice tight but trying for humour. "I'd say the rain washed away any of my blood…" The worry returned regardless. "Does it need to be pure to work? My blood... I mean, most of the Venatori are as thick as bricks, so…"

The thought still gnawed at him. He wanted to go back, to be sure. The idea of leaving even a single drop behind twisted in his gut. The last thing he needed was to lie awake wondering if some blood mage was out there, ready to seize control over him with it. Especially since he spent most nights with Ashur.

your teeth are bared, as they have been, your jaw aching for so long as growls slip free. you always have to defend yourself. you lash out in fear. you need someone who does not shrink back... a hand falling slowly to your shoulder, however briefly, in a reminder that you do not have to lunge. there is no danger here, now.

They were alone, panting from just escaping the clutches of the Venatori. Tarquin was sure he'd earned a couple of bruises on his shin, but nothing more.. thank fuck. The last thing he needed was to bleed in front of blood mages.

And then he realised that they were alone. Safe. In some random shop that had closed for the night. The bastards were likely still crawling through the streets outside, but he doubted they'd come in here. They only needed to wait it out until dawn, and the day would reset anyway.

Still, they were no closer to figuring out how to fix this time loop mess. At least the situation, by its nature, gave them time to work it out.

But what mattered most to Tarquin in that moment wasn't those fuckers; it was Ashur. He could hear him breathing somewhere in the dark, the sound similar to his own. Tarquin's eyes struggled to adjust, catching only the faint outline of a shelf and the glint of glass jars. He followed the sound instead, reaching out until his fingers brushed against Ashur's clothing.

That was enough. He gripped the fabric and pulled him close, dragging him into a tight, grounding hug. For a moment, the noise of the world, the chaos outside, the ticking clock of the loop… it all fell away. All that remained was the heat of Ashur's chest against his and the shared rhythm of their breaths.

"Thought those Vents got you for a second.."

"I didn’t think we’d ever be on the same side, but here we are… how does that feel?" @needleinthethreads

"Well, since one side is basically Venatori and those Elven gods against the other side which is anyone who doesn't want to be enslaved or blighted, I could say there's a fucking lot of us on the same side right now."

Tarquin dropped a heavy book onto the table as he spoke, the thud echoing through the quiet stacks. Of course Elek would approach him while he was sorting through the Shadow Dragon's library stores. This was his place of peace. Whenever the world became a chaotic mess, and lately it always did, he slipped away to the books.

Something about organising all this paperwork set his mind at ease. Was it the monotony? The rhythmic shuffle of parchment, the smell of old ink, the scrape of quills? Or was it the feeling of a job well done when, after hours of effort, he could see the order rising out of chaos?

Another thing he liked about this work: the notes on other people. Including the Threads. The hefty tome he'd just dropped was, in fact, the compiled notes on them, its spine cracking faintly under its own weight.

"So how do I feel?" He gave a dry snort, brushing dust off his palms. "Glad to still be breathing, for the moment."

A half-hearted chuckle was given in response to Tarquin, though he dared not try to laugh any harder, not knowing if his stomach could take it. His abs already ached from his hurling over the deck before.

"I think I am more afraid of offending the captain's right hand than I am the cook... she is an intimidating woman." Ashur said, smiling the best he could as he took another slow, small sip from the water, and then gave Tarquin a nod.

"It is helping, thank you. I think I should be fine to return to our cabin..." Ashur said with another nod, though the boat swayed a moment and he had to grip on to Tarquin to keep himself steady, and shook his head with another soft laugh.

"Though... perhaps having a bucket handy wouldn't be a bad idea. I wonder if the ship's doctor has something that can help settle the stomach..."

"I think you're better off not offending either of them. I heard stories about the captain. Don't take anything he offers you to drink."

When Ashur stumbled, Tarquin reached out and wrapped an arm around him. He could feel the weight of Ashur sag against him, the man's warmth heavy through the thin fabric of their tunics. Tarquin kept him steady but angled his body away from Ashur's face, just in case there was still food threatening to come back up. The sour tang of bile lingered faintly in the air, and Tarquin wrinkled his nose.

"Oh yeah, definitely getting you a bucket."

As he held him, Tarquin rubbed his back in slow circles, feeling the tremors of Ashur's chuckle under his palm. He nodded at the mention of the doctor, casting a glance toward the neat rows of lanterns swaying gently with the ship's motion.

"Bit of a fancy ship, this. Got their own cook and doctor. Don't know many ships like these that have both, except for the military or rich ones..."

Tarquin was sure he'd heard something in the Dragon's storeroom… or what was left of it. Before the raid, very few aside from the Dragons, or the odd rescued slave, had known about the secret entrance tucked back there. Even so, Tarquin was already wary of darkspawn in the underground. The last thing he wanted was to end up blighted while digging through old texts, hoping to find something he could use to help Ashur.

To his surprise, it wasn't darkspawn , or worse, Venatori, that emerged from the shadows, but a Crow. Those Antivan outfits were fucking hard to miss.

He stilled, even holding his breath as he waited for the assassin to pass. Then, in one fluid motion, he stepped forward, blade flashing as he pressed it to the man's throat.

Just as he expected, he was threatened.

"Maybe. But this was worth it. You'll never live that one down."

Tarquin lowered the blade with a smug grin, the tension he felt easing away slightly. It was rare to find something worth smiling about these days, so he took what he could get.

Of course Tarquin knew he was talking to the Inquisitor, the Herald of Andraste, and so on. But for the sake of their safety, it was best the Venatori had no idea they were meeting. Better to make Jasper look like just another visitor, someone passing through the bustle of Minrathous and looking to spend their coin. The only target he should be is by pickpocketers.

"Fuck it. Get some ink while I'm here. Then, when people are bored of watching you, we'll go somewhere safe to talk."
