I'm trying to get back into practicing helpol again, but it's been almost ten years and I've become a lot more cynical. I feel like I need to have buy-in to what I'm doing and that includes worshipping.

I have a TON of questions but my first question I guess is how are we supposed to handle...the stories? The bad ones. The ones that depict the gods in an unfavorable light. How do we just look past those things to worship them?

Thank you for your ask, and for being so vulnerable. I know from personal experience that coming back to a spiritual a/o religious practice after a period of dormancy is... hard, to say the least.

So, by 'bad stories' I am going to assume you are referring to the ancient myths that we have describing the actions of the Gods? If I am correct in that assumption - then good news! I have made a fair bit of content around this question.

The long and short of it is this: Greek Myths are symbolic, and not literal. In ancient times, some people took them as literal - but that is not what (most) modern Hellenic Polytheists believe today.

Hi! Sorry for bothering, but I want to build a shrine to Hyacinthus and worship him, and I also love crystals. I wanted to ask; are there any crystals tied to him, or any that's commonly used in his worship? I don't mind if it's subjective or objective, I want to know if he has any crystals attributed to him, and which ones people associate with him. Thank you! :D

Thank you for your ask! So sorry for my delayed response.

So... crystals can be a bit of a touchy subject in some witchy and pagan spaces. There's a (very fair) critique that most if not all crystals and semi-precious stones are unethically sourced and you can never really know where the seller is getting their crystals from. I personally do not feel qualified to speak on the matter, as I am not very well educated on it.

With that being said - I do own a fair number of crystals (albeit, ones I bought before I was aware of the above) and so it would be MASSIVELY hypocritical for me to shame or judge anyone for owning or wanting to own crystals.

WITH ALL OF THAT BEING SAID - to answer your question, I have yet to find a credible sources that ascribe specific crystals and stones to specific deities (if someone has a credible resource please share!). So an objective answer may not be possible, but as for a subjective answer - I heavily associate Prince Hyacinthus with the color purple, so I would recommend amethyst :)

4. Do you think life is guided by fate, free will or a mix of both?

By and large I believe that everything we do in this life is dictated by Free Will. This is actually such a core part of my own beliefs that it's one of the 7 Pillars of Hyakinthou Naos*. I don't personally believe in 'fate' or 'destiny' in the traditional sense, but I do believe in spiritual serendipity! That is to say, I believe that sometimes spiritually significant things can happen - that may seem to be orchestrated by fate - when in reality it's just chance or a "happy accident".

*Pillar 6 is Hekousion (ΕΚΟΥΣΙΟΝ) which very roughly can be translated to mean Free Will.

13. Do you prefer doing spells that are cast and then forgotten? Or do you prefer longer lasting ones, like jar spells, that you keep around?

So I'm not the biggest fan of how this question is worded? The dichotomy doesn't really apply to me exactly as described (but that may just be me being picky and semantic haha). Most of the spells I do are one and dones - in the sense that once they are cast they do not require recharging - but I wouldn't say that they are "cast and then forgotten"? In addition, I do use spell jars for specific workings (for me this primarily manifests in household workings), but those too are usually cast and then left - with no need for them to be recharged or recast at a later time.

15. Do you believe in things such as karma, or the threefold rule?

OOF! This question is (for me) VERY loaded - but the simplest answer is 'no' to both. Despite being what I call a 'part-time Hindu' - I do not subscribe to the idea of karma accrued in past lives dictating the circumstances of your current life. For me, this kind of mindset invalidates Free Will (to some extent) and is just incompatible with my worldview. Additionally, outside of occasionally saying "three times three, so mote it be" in certain spell work - I left the threefold rule behind when I stopped identifying as a Wiccan. All in all, I've seen far too many cruel and bigoted people thrive in life to be able to logically subscribe to either belief. Not that I think this mindset should apply to everyone! It just doesn't mesh with my beliefs.

So many conspiracy theories about Christian holidays deriving from "stolen" pagan customs implicitly dismiss the possibility that the common people might have had agency and created their own folk customs.

From what I understand (and I’ll be the first to admit my knowledge is limited) - Christians didn’t “steal” pagan customs or holidays, as much as they co-opted them for their own conversion purposes.

Some of the common pagan people of the time embraced these changes, and had a choice in the matter - but others resented them and had to convert to the new way of doing things or face consequences.

Per usual, it’s not black and white 🤷🏻‍♂️
