Welcome to Amphibian August!
Amphibians have existed on Earth for several hundred million years, and have survived through multiple mass extinctions that wiped out many other groups. But even though there are over 7500 known modern species – more than mammals! – between one-third and one-half of them are now also at serious risk of extinction. Factors such as habitat loss, human-induced climate change, pollution, and the worldwide spread of a fatal fungal disease are all causing a dramatic decline in amphibian populations.
So while we spend this month looking at amphibians of the past, please consider helping to protect those in the present by donating to a conservation organization such as Amphibian Ark or the Amphibian Survival Alliance.
Amphibian August #01 – Tiktaalik
We’re using a fairly loose definition of “amphibian” here, especially for the first few days – basically, anything in the evolutionary grade between lobe-finned fish and reptiles. (A more accurate term for these starting entries would probably be “anamniote tetrapodomorphs”, but that’s a lot more unwieldy.)
Don’t worry, we’ll get to temnospondyl hell the proper amphibians soon enough.
Tiktaalik is one of the earliest known examples of transitional forms between fish and tetrapods, living during the Late Devonian period (~375 mya) in Nunavut, Canada, and showing a mosaic mixture of anatomical features. Although it had gills, scales, and fins like a fish, it also had basic tetrapod-like limb bones and joints, a mobile neck, and primitive lungs.
It was also surprisingly large, reaching sizes of around 2.5m long (8′2″). With its vaguely crocodile-like head, flattened body, and sharp teeth, it was probably an ambush predator, capable of “walking” along shallow riverbeds and mudflats to reach areas inaccessible to other aquatic hunters.
Although it represents an incredibly important transitional form for science, Tiktaalik probably wasn’t the direct ancestor of living tetrapods – but it would have been very closely related to a common ancestor, and it gives us an idea of what such an animal may have looked like. Fossilized tetrapod footprints found in Poland date to over ten million years older than Tiktaalik, suggesting that they may have actually evolved much earlier than previously thought.
Fin, will be leg!
Boverisuchus magnifrons*, a crocodilian from the early Eocene of Germany (~50-40 mya). Reaching about 3m long (9′10″) it was much more heavily armored than its modern cousins, with an interlocking “exoskeleton” of bony osteoderms covering its body and limbs – leading to it being given the nickname “panzer croc”.
It was adapted for walking and running on land, with relatively long legs and surprisingly hoof-like claws. It may even have carried its weight directly on these hooves similar to mammalian ungulates.
And if that’s not unusual enough, its hind leg musculature suggests it also might have been capable of short bursts of bipedal sprinting.

My Little Pony: The Movie (2017)
I’m so gay for Tempest Shadow and her character animation in this scene.
ok just the animation in this gifset is enough to make me want to see this movie
This is… such good acting animation
I’m not a mlp fan but HOT DIGITTY DANG THAT CHARACTER ANIMATION REMINDS ME OF THE TIMES DISNEY USED TO GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THAT KIND OF STUFF
Friendship is Magic was the show that took “you can’t make good animation with Flash” as a dare and proved the animation community wrong.
So they wouldn’t settle for the movie doing any less than pushing the new animation software to it’s limit for a major movie.
I mean, the whole show is an example of effort where none was expected, with tools everyone underestimated.
It’s the ultimate undergod story where a veteran animation creator that just kind of did OKAY with her last project (Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends) put together an awesome team and created pure gold out of a show every expected to be a cash-in toy commercial.
It smacked everyone in the face like “JESUS CHRIST, WHAT WAS THAT!?” and now here we are with it spawning seven seasons and counting, several movies (two of which saw theaters), and several comic series from IDW.
Oh, and a whole slew of high-quality tie-in books including a three-book defictionalization of Daring Do with obscenely high-quality binding/printing that came in a gift set
ok im sorry for all the ponies but this movie is really funny

Hello there, Mr./Mrs. CubedCoconut! I have one really awkward request but I suppose you're getting a lot of awkward requests so I'm going to fill it in nevertheless. So, could you please draw Pearl like a Soviet women soldier from WWII? Like, for example, great sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko, Hero of the Soviet Union and hero of the Woody Gunthrie's song? There is a lot of her portraits in uniform on the Internet, please choose one by yourself! Thanks in advance, Lucius.
